Is that the sound of a rapidly and highly embarrassed Sentinel reversing? To be fair, the Sentinel did say weeks ago that he'd probably be staying. But when this strange Fenerbahce story starts making national TV in Turkey, albeit probably based on this odd fake Afobe stuff, they probably felt they had to mention it because it was getting so much buzz in Turkey? I still wouldn't be staggered if he isn't a Stoke player come August though!

I love how the club has come out and said Afobe is on no social media platform.
We know, because that would mean the lazy fucker would have had to go to the effort of making an account.

Just restarted the Afobe debate on his thread, to allow the LB thread to get it's topic back! Club | Season | League | Apps | Goals | Arsenal | 09/10 | PL | 0 | 0 | Huddersfield (Loan) | 10/11 | L1 | 28 | 5 | Reading (Loan) | 11/12 | Ch | 3 | 0 | Bolton Wanderers (Loan) | 12/13 | Ch | 20 | 2 | Millwall (Loan) | 12/13 | Ch | 5 | 0 | Sheff Wed (Loan) | 13/14 | Ch | 12 | 2 | MK Dons (Loan) | 14/15 | L1 | 22 | 10 | Wolves (Loan) | 14/15 | Ch | 21 | 13 | Wolves | 15/16 | Ch | 25 | 9 | Bournemouth | 15/16 | PL | 15 | 4 | Bournemouth | 16/17 | PL | 31 | 6 | Bournemouth | 17/18 | PL | 17 | 0 | Wolves (Loan) | 17/18 | Ch | 16 | 6 | SCFC | 18/19 | Ch | 45 | 8 |
So yeah, he hit a purple patch of 32 in 68 around 14-16. Incidentally, we've just signed Lee Gregory from Millwall for free, and his record in and around L1 and the Championship is: Club | Season | League | Apps | Goals | Millwall | 14/15 | Ch | 39 | 9 | Millwall | 15/16 | L1 | 41 | 18 | Millwall | 16/17 | L1 | 37 | 17 | Millwall | 17/18 | Ch | 43 | 10 | Millwall | 18/19 | Ch | 44 | 10 |
Quite an interesting comparison when you factor in (games played permitting) cost of the player in fees, wages and the types of teams both were playing for.

Jones has the challenge of firing feckers like him and Ince up to play to their potential, if he can arrest the decline of the past three years and get things moving forward again players like Afobe can do ok , clearly has it in him but like so many the move to Stoke seems to have made them half the player they were before , that's the problem that needs solving .

Yes the LB thread did veer off topic a tad! Thanks onlooker!
just to summarise my points, I think it's a little unfair to judge Benik off the amount of goals he scored alone. He has only ever hit a high number of appearances over a single season at Stoke.
Over the course of his career he is generally a 1 in 3 striker, with a 3 year purple patch of 1 in 2.
Last year he was rubbish, I'd happily sell him tomorrow to land say Dwight gayle, but I still think if the squad performs consistently well we would see 20 goals from him if he managed 40+ appearances.

Just restarted the Afobe debate on his thread, to allow the LB thread to get it's topic back! It's pretty clear Afobe's been terrible value for money. That said I think we have seen flashes of how lethal he can be at the starts of the season and occasionally when he has run through on goal and finished immediately (there's one goal at home, I think, that I can't remember). I think there's something there tbh.

I was under the impression statistics were your 'thing'? Why? That was 5 years ago! Strikers rarely get better with age beyond their early 20s. I'll never forgive him for us performance at Hull. He came on as a late sub and didn't give a damn. He'd clearly decided that game was lost and couldn't be bothered.

I was under the impression statistics were your 'thing'? Just because you wrote it does not make it fact. Because of the FACT that in his entire 14 year career he twice scored more than 10 goals in a season, and added to that, the evidence we have seen with our own eyes last season, I am willing to bet a substantial amount of money that he will not score 20 or more goals this coming season. When you add the FACTS he was 7 6 years younger when he scored 13 in 21 and last season he managed an amazing 8 in 45, I will be willing to double that bet.

Just ignore the fact that half of those 6 years were spent in a harder division where scoring 10 is immensely difficult. As I keep repeating, I don't rate him, but his record means he is always capable. I actually think Vokes will get more but hey-ho.

In only 2 seasons he has reached double figures. What on earth indicates he will ever reach 20 as he grows older slower less hungry? His most recent 4 seasons are 8 in 45 6 in 33 6 in 31 13 in 40 A total of 30 in 149 or about 1 goal in 5. Given a run of 40 - 45 games, on his consistent form over 4 years, he should score 8 or 9. How can you “not rate him” while arguing he could score 20 for us next season?

If he's staying we may as well try and make some money out of him, he spends that much time on his arse we could maybe sell advertising space on the soles of his boots, that place where they keep forgetting to put studs.

Im hoping Stoke City finally starts playing to his strengths - i.e runs into the penalty area 'off the shoulder' to balls played in front of him
and he gets a sackful
I too, live in hope

Afobe is a different type of striker to Vokes and Gregory and will be a useful alternative. We overpaid for him, but that is nothing new (until this summer) and he could find himself surplus to requirements in the near future if Campbell really does develop into the player we all hope he does.
Right now, recruitment priorities lie elsewhere and I am happy enough with the four strikers we will have at our disposal going into the new season.

We have McClean who can’t cross a ball and Ince who’s scared to pass to a teammate mate, who suppose to create for Afobe who doesn’t like to move too much.
It’s not a great recipe for success.

I am surprised that some are happy with our 4 strikers, all of which seem to be a 1 in 4 scorer at best. recent history has shown that at least for auto promotion you have to hit 90 goals. With pretty much less than 15 likely to from the likes of Allen, Etebo Clucas McClean and Ince and Powell at best another 1 in 4 that total is way out of our reach. Maybe Gregory will score twice as many as he did last season to become our Billy Sharp but it's a tall order.

He would improve our strike team no end!

If the defence is as tight as a nuns crutch then you can get away with as little as 75 scored. I don't see how there's even 75 goals in this team. We had the same issue last year and apart from adding some creativity in Powell it still hasn't been addressed.

I'm not saying he will do it by any means but you also don't know that he won't. I don't rate him as much because I think he isn't an influential player and relies on the team doing well. I personally THINK he would do well if he got 40 + games and the team were generally performing at top half level consistently.
