Cardinal Black - Live Rooms, Chester. Last night touring their first album. I only know a couple of songs, not heard much by them but wanted to see Chris Buck live. Best guitarist in Britain, outrageously talented. The whole band were excellent. Crowd eating out of the palm of their hands. Great venue if a little chaotic on opening. Highly recommend Cardinal Black and will go out of my way to see them again. As you say, Tom Hollister really knows how to work a crowd and Chris Buck is quite rightly ranked alongside Joe Bonamassa by the music critics. It was my first time at Live Rooms too and tbh I wasnt that impressed. I thought the sound was dreadful and it was very disappointing not to be able to hear these great vocalists clearly apart from on the quieter songs. And even then, it was spoilt by sections of the audience talking/shouting at one another. Not great for what's supposed to be Chester's premier music venue? Great to hear the band are working on another album though, and I'm looking forward to seeing them next time they tour

China Crisis at the Foxlowe last night, really enjoyed it, their albums helped me through a couple of Gulf deployments back in the day, I should have slipped them some cash really since the only tapes I listened to were Dubai specials 😀

Ironically I've been to Live Rooms a few times and sound always been decent , must notably for the very loud Phil Campbell from Motorhead and sounded crystal clear. Odd to hear it wasn't all that when you went

"Come on, own up, how many of you lot think we're a fucking tribute band?"

Yeh, he was on form again last night 😀 I feared the worst when he first came on, two songs in and he hadn't said a word, made up for it though. A woman in the crowd asked if they could make it a bit cheaper next time, he said "you've paid less than 30 quid, if you wanted to see Depeche Mode this close up it'd cost you 400!" 🙂

Just back from Birmingham after seeing fuzz-drenched neo-psyche shoegaze types TVAM and glacial post-punk synth abusers The KVB. Not been to The Castle & Falcon before but it's quite a nice little venue - it's a bit like The Glebe but with a decent sized performance room out the back. Shame it's in a part* of Birmingham that makes Tunstall look like the Côte d'Azur. *Actually, most of Birmingham makes Tunstall look like the Côte d'Azur come to think of it. Ah gutted - I like TVAM and The KVB. Probably not enough for an 80 mile roundtrip for just one, but that's a great double header. When I first heard them, I think it was The KVB who reminded me of Big Cash Prizes.

Last night in LA was funky - Illumishade, Visions of Atlantis and Korpiklaani.
Liked Illumishade and the Visions show was weird but a blast. Frenetic Finnish folk metal with Korpiklaani wasn't my jam tbh, but they were having fun on stage.
The Illumishade lead singer is from Eluveitie. She's good.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds booked for December at the AO.
I'm reaping what I've sown to my eldest, as I played him the Let Love In album late at night on a drive home. He could not find anyone to go with him, so he bought a ticket for me, so at least he now gets transport and free food.
We're also doing the Tubular Bells 50 Years concert at the Buxton Opera House in October.

In between a shit pile of DIY I went to watch Echo & the Bunnymen at Liverpool a few weeks back, I've got The The and Gary Newman planned in soon, wouldn't mind going to see Nick Cave as per post above, I might have a look where he's playing and availability. Gouranga.

Another album launch in Liverpool tonight, this time for The Zutons at Jacaranda records. Great small venue, band were on great form and we were home and hosed by 10pm again.
Another one of those gigs that makes you despise the general public though, with one massive turbocunt displaying the famous scouse sense of humour by shouting out 'it's nice to see you sober' to recovering alcoholic singer Dave McCabe as he just got on the stage. Same guy also shouted out for Valerie the second they'd finished it. You could tell he was a massive wanker as soon as he set foot in the crowd. Prick.
Plus someone filming every 3rd or 4th song with the fucking flash on.
Anyway, probably the first and time I'll ever do two Monday gigs in a row. Great night.

New Co-op arena in Manchester has cancelled its latest gig tonight, with my 16 year old lad being one of the crowd told to go home. What a complete and utter shit show that place has been so far.

Just before last night's Insomnium show we get an email saying the bands were starting half an hour early, wtf?
Missed most of the openers but enjoyed the show.
I was really impressed with their version of White Christ, they used their own singer I could tell he was covering for Sakis Tolis, who has a very particular voice.

I ended up on the radio today talking about this! I wasn't going to any of the gigs but just texted in saying there's loads else going on in Manchester and I'd still make use of my hotel room if I'd booked one. I remember one night a couple of years ago when a gig in Manc got cancelled - I looked what else was on and there was all sorts. Scooter was one. I ended up seeing a Nigerian r&b singer called Sister Cookie at the tiny Night and Day on Oldham Street, and it was a brilliant gig.

Wonder if it's possible that they'll pull the Liam Gallagher run of shows next month?

This sort of stuff happens with the health and safety at big arenas. I remember When the Manchester Arena opened many years back they switched the ventilation system on and 6 months of building dust got pumped into the place and the first show was pulled.........

You'd think another 5 weeks should be plenty of time to get things sorted. The biggest error seemed to be arranging so many events so soon after the planned opening. I see one of the postponed gigs has now moved to AO Arena. With the football season finished soon, maybe the Etihad Stadium is a likely alternate venue. With the bigger capacity Gallagher could drop to two gigs instead of four.
