Just back from Shed Seven at the Vicky Hall. Another awesome gig by the band. Never fail to impress and seem to get better and better each time I see them. take a bow Rick Witter I watched them for the first time last year at Parr Hall in Warrington and did not enjoy it because I thought the sound was not very good at all (Parr Halls fault not Sheds). Went last night to see them for the second time last night and they were fucking awesome. The sound was brilliant. Just a little note, out of this 8 date tour, Stoke is the only one that did not sell out. For me, it is the right decision currently not to have a arena in the city

Put Shed Seven on a Friday or a Saturday in Stoke and you'd probably double if not treble the numbers there last night.

Last time they played on Thursday and the place was rammmed. Monday is not generally a good night for gigs in stoke or most places like the viccy hall i guess.

Saw The Enid last week - nostalgia trip, first saw them in the early 80s at Reading festival. Robert Godfrey still going strong and did his bizarrely camp version of Wild Thing to finish. Marvellous.
Off to see Hawklords tonight...

Pretenders at Content in Liverpool. £25* - couldn't fault it. Chrissie Hynde still rocking like they're a new band. Can't believe she's 72! Not a bad venue - part of Cain's brewery site if anyone knows that area of Liverpool. Talking at gigs is definitely a (f'ing irritating) thing now. Made doubly so when lt's two squeaky scouse women behind you. * I think they're doing their best not to play the music biz game. She was on form last night at the Ritz in Manchester like you say still looking and sounding great with a really dec3ent band. Could have done with a few more of the classics but I'm being picky here because she's still knocking out really good relevant music. Couldn't believe she played Talk of the town completely made my night

My other half is going to see her in London. Wouldn't say i was a big fan but looking at her setlist she is actually doing my 2 fave songs so they should be good when they appear on YouTube.

I disagree plus why are Shed Seven going to turn a date in Manchester,Liverpool or London for a Saturday night in Stoke? The answer is they are not Also, we have similar population to Wolverhampton and they have sold a Tuesday night out

I thought her voice was absolutely great Mike, right up there with the best it's been but I thought the structure of the set left a lot to be desired, especially the segueways between many of the songs, they just became totally tedious. By way of example, Vogue was totally taking the roof off, the crowd was going nuts but then it kind of morphed into this nonsensical fashion show that Madonna judged and the atmosphere completely fell off a cliff, such a shame and completely no need for it. And this happened repeatedly. Hung Up was less than 3.5 mins long, yet I've seen her do 8 or 9 min versions of this in the past, where she sends the audience into a frenzy. Playing shortened versions of Holiday and Into the Groove in the first quarter of the set, seemed like a complete waste, especially when she played self indulgent versions of her more recent stuff to finish and the crowd were leaving in their droves by the time it finished. Was I glad that I went? well, yeah I guess but would I feel like I'd have seriously missed out if I hadn't gone? well no, probably not. EDIT: I see she's about to start announcing cancellations already and having been burned by her twice before, this would really put me off for the future. I actually laughed when the promoters announced a 74 date tour and said to Dee, yeah like as if she's going to do anything like that many shows by the end of it!

Pretenders at Manchester Ritz last night.
Well I bought their first LP in 1980 but for some reason I'd never seen them live. Having seen their Glastonbury set on TV I had a good feeling about this one and it didn't disappoint.
Surprised by the length of the queue outside but most of those ahead of me must have headed for the bar or the balcony so was able to get a spot right in front of the stage. Bit of a wait as no support band.
Rhythm, lead, bass and drums. No gimmicks, no miming, no recorded backing, just four musicians playing great rock 'n' roll music. Superb sound. The real deal.
Chrissie Hynde was magnificent. She looked like she was really enjoying herself and I was stunned by the quality of her voice, it sounded just as good as she did on those records 40 years ago: a real rarity amongst pop stars of her generation. She even threw in an impromptu version of Everyday Is Like Sunday for Johnny Marr's birthday, much against the rest of the band's wishes as they hadn't rehearsed it. A special mention for a great version of my favourite Pretenders B side, Cuban Slide.
What a night out, loved every minute of it.

Hawklords were great last night - cracking version of Brainstorm, I'm sure Nic Turner would have approved
Last time I saw them a couple of years ago Nic just turned up and jammed with the band. The bassist, Dr Dibs, was saying before the gig that he got a great send off at his funeral and he'd have loved the fact that he was the centre of attention for the day ...

Have to admit I've only ever bought "The Singles" album in about '91 and only heard the odd random deep track, but it was great to hear the 3/4 "hits" and just enjoy seeing no-frills guitar rock by an "industry legend"*. * She probably hates that term.

I used to really like Madonna and collected all her records in the 80s. She began to lose me after Like A Prayer as she moved more into dance music, not helped by abominations like American Pie (though Ray Of Light was good). I've never felt the desire to see her live, all the theatrics (fancy stage sets, costume changes, dancers) were never my thing, and all the stories of miming and pre-recorded backing tracks leave me cold. I notice in those 3 videos you posted there was no sign of any actual musicians playing any actual music!

Holly Johnson tonight in Brum. If there’s ever a bigger difference between a band lead singer and the original band? Holly was amazing as was the Frankie stuff. The solo stuff not so much…

DMAs, The Tanks, Cairns
Supported by Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. All girl band from Canberra (of all places,) same as Genesis Owusu so must be starting to produce some sort of music scene. Fairly raw, but quite enjoyable.
DMAs started with the first track off the new album which I like. Also played a lot of their old stuff, but I was surprised not Pump up the Morphine. Interesting observation of the youngsters, one or two were filming. However, when they played Believe every fcuker there got their phone out (does my head in!)
Anyway, enjoyable & pretty good
They play Keele Uni on 10/12/2023. Worth a look

Slowdive at Manchester Ritz. Absolutely incredible, and they didn't even play what I think is their best live track (Avalyn). Like waves of beautiful noise washing over me, and the floor was vibrating it was so loud at times (somehow Slowdive never make my ears ring, however loud it gets). Easily the gig of the year, with only Symposium left who I think can beat it. Amazing that I made a list over 20 years ago of 90s bands I hadn't seen live and wanted to reform, and I'm seeing the penultimate and final one from that list to reform in the space of 2 weeks, in 2023.
I managed three gigs while holidaying in Spain - Teenage Fanclub: good as always but wasn't massively feeling it and missed the encore to get back to my accommodation at a reasonable time), previously fellow 90s jangle power poppers Velvet Crush who I never thought I'd see and Time Wraps Around You sounded especially great, and finally pianist Fabrizio Paterlini with a string trio: unfortunately I didn't think the venue acoustics were great - still a good gig but not the best I've seen him, and both other times were solo.
Before I went on holiday:
The Big Moon at The Sugarmill - excellent as always, and those vocal harmonies are to die for, though I thought a track from the first album would've livened things up quicker earlier on.
The Rezillos - 70s pop punkers who for some reason were one of the first bands I got into as a teen. It was awesome to hear Top of the Pops and their cover of Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight live.
Tasha Leaper as Madonna at Eleven - suffered from only being a three-piece band on tracks like Frozen (which was still great to hear) but the poppier stuff sounded excellent.
The Joy Formidable at Manchester Academy 3 - first time seeing them since the first time in 2008, when they were being touted as the next big thing. Lots of superb noise, and fun stuff from the drummer who apparently had access to a microphone for the first time.
