Foals in Manchester tonight, unfortunately, due to the kick-drum being bone crushing loud, it's resulted in the mic on my phone compressing the entire audio when the kick is playing but hey, a flavour ...
I've just got back from this (stopped over in Mcr, haven't walked back or owt like that). '2am' and 'Degrees' went off like the Union Carbide staff canteen. Absolute bangers. Absolutely corking gig - felt a bit sorry for support band Yard Act though as despite being mint and also a bit of a buzz band at the moment the crowd largely didn't give a shit. (Pretty sure that they're not that arsed however as I know how much they were getting paid š¤£)

In Degrees was absolutely epic, been waiting for a long time to hear that live.
I had been reliably told that World of Twist were going to step in at the last moment as support, so was very dissapointed when it turned out to be somebody else ...

Went to see them in Blackpool in May and off to Leeds next week to see them. I went to see Ed Sheeran at Wembley last night

Just got back to my sweaty budget hotel (paid for by SJM š) after witnessing the era-defining LCD Soundsystem on the fourth night of their run of gigs at Brixton Academy.
First saw these North American disco-punk upstarts playing to around 150 people in Manchester about 20 years ago for the princely sum of Ā£8. I've seen them countless times in the intervening decades but tonight I truly believe I've witnessed something special.
Yes, I may be more than a little pissed. And yes, I may have (despite the good advice of normal people of a similar age within our party) indulged in a smidgen of low-grade street drugs. And yes, it is very much my 40th birthday today.
However, despite all the aforementioned, I won't be dissuaded from the opinion that tonight was utterly mesmeric and will be talked about by those in attendance for years to come.
Viva James Murphy! Viva DFA!
(I'm definitely going to have a sore head tomorrow but fuck it...you only live once!)

Courtney Barnett in Nottingham last night superb a proper rock chick performance. Close to the front which was fine until she reached peak Barnett on the hour on Pedestrian at best when I was transported into a mosh pit of the lairiest butch lesbians on the planet

The support last night were Audiobooks if you get the chance go and see them rarely do you get the crowd wanting more from a support band. David Wrench's new project but the female singer put in an exceptional performance.

Tears For Fears at Telford QEII Arena last night.
80s music is really not my thing and I've only ever bought one of their records (the Everybody Wants To Rule The World single) but I was gifted a ticket at the last minute so thought I'd give it a go, but went along with fairly low expectations.
I don't think my expectations of a gig have EVER* been so wildly exceeded as this one. I thought the show was superb and I was totally gripped by the whole thing from start to finish.
Stunning sound quality. Really goods songs (even the ones from their new LP which I'd never heard before stood up really well). Top notch backing musicians playing real instruments. Great dynamics, lots of light and shade, even some acoustic guitars. And they both seemed like likeable blokes as well.
Funny old world, isn't it.
* (except for Brian Wilson's comeback Pet Sounds show at the Royal Festival Hall in 2002)

I loved the first two albums and still play the first one to this day but swore I'd never go to see them again. I did hear an interview a few years back suggesting that they struggled with live performances in the early days so perhaps there may be another explanation.

If anyones going to the Pixies on Tuesday at Castlefield, they've just cancelled two shows this weekend due to Covid so could be touch and go whether it's on or not.

Went to this place last week for a comedy show, not bad all in all, few good laughs, more performers than audience members to be honest. www.hooplaimpro.com/improv-comedy-club-london-bridge.htmlChap I was talking to reckoned Fri/Sat nights are the best, costs less than a couple of pints so can't go wrong really. At a pub called The Miller just outside Guys Hospital.

I was right up at the front centre stage so could see the whites of their eyes, and the two of them looked relaxed and quite happy to be there! Maybe they are just more confident with the sound they are making these days. They can obviously afford the best modern technology, backing musicians, sound systems etc. It all makes it so much easier to reproduce live. Or maybe they've just mellowed with old age, or maybe they were counting their money knowing they'd be back in California soon, who knows? And Roland Orzabal didn't half remind me of Bill Bailey, same hair, same mannerisms.

Irish singer Cara Dillon at Alstonefield Memorial Hall last night. A fan for many years but disappointing overall Singing not up to it? Poor song choice? A combination of things really. I doubt many other folk at the gig would have been disappointed, but as an artist, I know well, her voice just didn't have the same power and clarity that I have come to expect (health and lockdown rust may have something to do with this). I didn't particularly like the venue and the sound was a bit lacking also. I would still go and see her again in a heartbeat, even though this wasn't her finest performance.

Pop at the Lock in Middlewich yesterday was good. I wasn't massively familiar with any of the bands, but they were all good, with 80s popsters The Darling Buds the highlight - much rockier than I expected with even a couple of punk-like tracks. Other highlights were The Just Joans, and MJ Hibbett and The Validators (missing a bassist due to illness), who both had sets full of catchy indie pop tracks with lots of laughs from the chat in between. Jetstream Pony sounded excellent but perhaps a bit samey overall, though I liked them enough to get more familiar with their material. Tears For Fears at Telford QEII Arena last night. 80s music is really not my thing and I've only ever bought one of their records (the Everybody Wants To Rule The World single) but I was gifted a ticket at the last minute so thought I'd give it a go, but went along with fairly low expectations. Funny old world, isn't it. * (except for Brian Wilson's comeback Pet Sounds show at the Royal Festival Hall in 2002) I think the 80s is the worst decade for music and came upon a last-minute cheapo ticket, and I'm glad I did. Shout is one of the best songs I've ever heard live. I didn't realise Sowing the Seeds of Love was a Tears for Fears song, and that's a cracker. After enjoying some Yazoo in the leadup, so it's disappointing Alison Moyet had to pull out due to Covid at the last minute. I didn't think the sound was great for her replacement, Brand New Heavies, with the bass way too loud and the guitar barely audible.
