Not heard of these before, I really like that, going to check out more of their stuff. Intrigued by this 'house concert', how did that work then? House concerts are quite big (or should that be small?) in The States and parts of Europe and some artists do like the relaxed and intimate vibe they get from playing in front of a handful of people. My friend has put a few of these on now and the reason she got someone, seemingly incongruous to be putting on in front of a group of old fogeys like us, is that the singer, Gerard Starkie, used front a 90's band called Witness with her son in law Ray. The duo were up from Bristol playing a gig at The Foxlowe in Leek the night after and this served as a warm up for that. Many house concerts (I believe) don't have a set charge to attend but rely on people making a sensible donation and/or buying an album.. My friend however asked for a contribution of £10 each towards the artist, while she provided food for all attendees and a bed for the night for the artists. I think there was 11 of us there watching. Thanks. This sounds brilliant, really need to keep my ear to the ground! 🤞

My last gig was one we put on ourselves in Fulford a couple of weeks back, with Milwaukee guitarist Willy Porter and this guy supporting.

Squeeze at the Symphony Hall Brum tonight, supported by Heaven 17.
Heaven 17 were pretty average apart from finishing their set with a great version of Temptation. They've got a female vocalist who absolutely nailed it, had the place on their feet.
Squeeze brilliant as ever, much more 'new' old stuff this time, King George Street, Mumbo Jumbo, In Quintessence were 3 I remember. I'll never tire of Difford & Tilbrook, legends!
Much more audience participation as well, they got the whole place singing along with Tempted.

I should have learnt by now to be wary of big names playing the Sugarmill ....it's usually because they're desperate for the money to support expensive habits.
Thurston Moore, 34th greatest guitarist according to Rolling Stone, regrettably decided to focus on his new stuff, long dull sound collages with lots of cymbal rolls and vague noodling. Occasionally it took off before falling to bits.
The crowd went mad just because he'd come to Stoke, many had faded away during a suspiciously long wait for an encore, which was the better part of the gig as I could actually get within sight of the stage, and the band produced some tighter music.
To be fair to Thurston he did make himself easily available to fans (at the merch table) after the gig.

The Damned last night were (predictably) excellent. Warm up gig for their palladium show next week so a fairly random disjointed set list meaning songs one usually expects in certain chunks of the set were either not there or played at different times. Encore had a cracking version of Curtain Call, and seeing as the Palladium gig is seemingly focussing heavily on their gothic period there was a few from mid 80s. Incongruous venue ( [KK Steel Mill) which is indeed an old mill on an industrial estate off the Penn Rd, so still prefer the Civic and Wulfrin when they reopen. Sound was good, and band as entertaining as ever. Only downside was a fight broke out between a pissed up little twat and an older guy who was sober and really should have known better - definitely two wrongs not making a right. And a day off with the kids today , brill

Saw them a few years ago at telford and thought they were excellent and they had a stunning bird on keyboards They even did some early human league stuff. Blancmange were supporting and Neil Arthur nailed it. I must admit i didnt realise how much of their back catalogue i knew. Would watch them again. all in all a fantastic night.

The stunning bird on keyboards is Berenice Scott, just for confirmation (ahem). Next up Atomic Rooster!

Not normally a big folk music fan, but saw this bloke on Sunday night. Some of his stuff is quite John Martyn.
Deerhunter supported by Cate Le Bon next week and Snarky Puppy three days after!

... Chemical Brothers, Riverstage Brisbane last night. Excellent. Another band I’ve never managed to see before (having moved to FNQ in 1990.) Mrs came too after not being sure whether she would & loved them. So did Fergus (22) his girlfriend and her twin brother. Great night had by all. Opened with “Go” (thought it would have been “Hey Boy, Hey Girl” - that was halfway through their two hour set.) Played most of their hits & other faves. Fly back to Cairns tomorrow

Been a very strange week, should have been at Sugarmill tonight watching Mike Monroe, but due to a minor car accident today I’ve not been able to go. However I did go to a gig last night, took the kids to see Little Mix at the NEC, who as ever were bloody good- slick show, great sound and engaged the audience , not a cheap night but great pop music and very well done.

Snarky Puppy last Friday in Bristol. Jazz Fusion not my usual go-to, but when it's played by an ensemble of great musicians with just the right amount of funk, it's fantastic.

Funny day, wife came home from work with some wine from her boss so was rude not to open it ( I clearly can’t leave any in bottle so finished it) and as a very long term member of the Iron Maiden fan club they always do a pre sale (before any of the other presales) and the summer 2020 euro gigs went on sale today. Not saying the wine had this effect, cos we always go and see them somewhere other than UK, but 15 mins of frantic clicking has secured me tickets for Stuttgart and Bologna in July, as well as the Download show in June ( top tip, don’t buy in advance for that cos the day tickets are cheaper on the gate as don’t include booking fee).:
Just got to tell the wife now, what could possibly go wrong ?!

Don't go to many nowadays but off to Billy Bragg in Sheffield on Sunday. Would have done all three nights if I wasn't married ....
& then Black Moth to come Dec 6th. Saw them in 2012 at Live at Leeds, and they were superb. Just never got round to seeing them since so thought I really ought to go to their penultimate gig. Their final gig is in London, 7th Dec The Lexington for any of you south-east-based chaps & chapesses that might be interested.

I really enjoyed Feeder (both nights) in Manc at the weekend.
Coming up: Battle Beast (Finnish power-metallers who do a great cover of Push it to the Limit from Scarface/GTA) Glenn Hughes performing classic Deep Purple
Then I have 4 in 4 nights, which I think will be a new record: Mostly Autumn (great Pink Floyd-esque prog-rock band with an occasionally Celtic sound) British Sea Power (just 3 members, sort of acoustic) AVA (piano/violin duo) Fabrizio Paterlini (Italian pianist, first time in the UK and recommended if you like Ludovico Einaudi)
And another two a couple of days later: Nordic Giants (afternoon gig) Mono (awesome Japanese instrumental band) with an orchestra
Which means I'll have seen the 3 bands I've seen live the most (BSP, Mostly Autumn and Feeder), all in the space of a month.
Oh, and I'm thinking of going to that 90s thing in Manc, with Culture Beat, Ace of Base, 2Unlimited, Sash, Whigfield etc. That'll round off a rather varied month of gigs. I've never seen any such pop acts live, but have seen Rhythm of the 90s, an excellent 90s dance/pop covers band.

Always buy a t-shirt at a gig I've particularly enjoyed (maybe 3-4 a year) and I have 2 Mono t's - one of only 4 acts I have multiple shirts for (the others being Explosions In The Sky, The Dickies and Billy Bragg). Enjoy!
