You’re right. Abuse is simply not acceptable however there’s plenty on here who use abusive language when talking about politicians, celebrities, Royals or footballers. Should it only be deemed unacceptable if there’s a hate element or across the board? Maybe I’m a bit old fashioned but I don’t like swearing whoever it’s targeted at but it is more offensive or hurtful if it’s targeted because of the way someone looks. In relation to free speech it’s fine by me as people need to have a voice people just need to be willing to listen without shouting someone down or getting personal. Please don’t take this as a dig as it’s not directed at any one specifically. You only have to look at “the government shambles” and “Brexit” thread to see the level of “behind a keyboard” abuse which goes on in social media 😂😂 I'm sure you're not walking up to the Albanians at the train station calling them all criminals are you?

Just behind the keyboard then... I’ve not abused anybody. There you go getting mixed up about freedom of speech. And that’s the issue. There’s a country mile between someone verbally abusing someone and someone having a view on one of numerous “controversial” issues, whether it’s immigration, Begum returning to the U.K. or any other stories in the news. If people aren’t allowed to have a view and able to discuss “respectively” controversial subjects without being shut down or being called a racist, facist or woke then that’s not free speech.

The consequences thing is a red herring .. anything anyone ever says has consequences or there’d be no point in saying it. That’s nothing to do with freedom of speech, which is the right to express your opinion publicly without state punishment, persecution or intervention. You’re right that we don’t fully have it in this country and we’re all the worse off for it. They do in the USA. Are we? People shouldn’t have that right in the slightest imo. You should not be allowed to be racist etc in public and have no consequences. Define being racist in public. Is being anti-immigration racist? Is blackface racist? Are affirmative action policies racist? Is *criticising* affirmative action policies racist? Is attacking Islam, or any other religion, racist? Is a joke about racial stereotypes racist? Is singing some n-word rap lyrics racist? Is training your dog to sieg heil racist etc etc etc etc... There are certainly people who would think so so who decides? I can't believe you'd surrender to appointing someone to put limits on what you can *say* so wilfully.. and of course the day they ban things is the day they ratchet up the necessity for people to go out and say those things, however distasteful and offensive they are.

No one is appointed, it’s an organic thing.

There has to be laws written about it (indeed there are in UK and it's a fkin disaster). I guess I don't really know what you're advocating for.. not entirely sure you do either tbh

I don’t think there’s an issue and that there isn’t a concept such as free speech to even warrant to be bothered by it. To then see people that care about it, limit what people can say makes me laugh.

I don’t think there’s an issue and that there isn’t a concept such as free speech to even warrant to be bothered by it. To then see people that care about it, limit what people can say makes me laugh. People are investigated by the police and sometimes charged and convicted of crimes for things like retweeting rap lyrics, or youtubing a dog doing a "nazi salute" as a joke, or - a recent one - praying in silence on the street. And they spend countless hours investigating and recording "non-crime hate incidents" including things like saying men can't be women on Twitter. It's a total disaster. But if you're fine with it, fair enough. Show what we're up against People are imprisoned and tortured all over the world for saying things they believe, honestly I find it gobsmacking that someone living in a (relatively) free Western country could say something as flippant as free speech doesn't warrant being bothered by. It's such an important principle it really can't be overstated.

People should have the “right” to say whatever they want. When that person says something that is wrong, others should also have the “right” to call them out. When they say something that breaks the law, the justice system should have the “right” to get involved. Surely the problem arises when the person who thinks they "have the right to call them out" decides to cancel their opponents view altogether? Be it in the form of censorship, de-platforming, propaganda etc. It's fine if X off the street calls someone out in the same way it's fine if someone calls out X off the street for wrongly calling them out. Where the problem arises is when big institutions, mainstream media, corporate business, government etc start interfering and taking sides. Because what makes their view of what is acceptable right? The legal system point is ropey too. Our own legal system has some pretty questionable flaws, let alone those in authoritarian states like Iran. Breaking the law and the justice system differs from nation to nation, culture to culture.

Breaking the law and the justice system differs from nation to nation, culture to culture. The concept of free speech is always going to be a grey issue. Everyone will have a limit to what they think should be tolerated. I personally believe that Twitter shouldn’t be a “free speech” platform. It’s a business. Someone has the right to say whatever they want, it doesn’t mean that Twitter actually has to house it there. I think that the whole topic is quite a grey area to be honest and what I wrote largely centers around someone talking to you face to face. Individual interactions with companies is not a yes/no area. For example, would you be happy to see the KKK have a prime time show on the BBC? Or would you think that it would be a little inappropriate to have the Grandmaster trying to influence everyone on a platform watched by millions? If BBC were approached and there was a reasonable number of people around the world excited to see it, do you think he should have that platform to propel his message? Or do you think that, in some instances, a business can say, “you can say what you want, but we don’t have to amplify your voice”?

I'm really glad that he's come good on his promise to absolutely fuck over Twitter. I suspect that the splintered nature of all of the other Twitter-like platforms means that none will legitimately take it's place as the Number 1 Twat-talking platform and we'll be left with a wonderful vacuum that isn't filled for many years.
Facebook next. Elon, you know what to do.

It's not like Argos or Tesco, it is a platform for people to speak, it's the modern equivalent to speakers corner which means they have a responsibility to make sure that freedom of speech is applied consistently across the board. Either everyone is cancelled and banned or no one is.

I wouldn't say I'd be fine with it, I'd rather they didn't, I wouldn't tune in to watch but if you ban them then surely you'd have to ban other extremist ideologies from being given a platform such as BLM or trans activists and such like. I'd draw the line at inciting violence.
