A lot of what he did last night was backwards and sideways. What he does do extremely well is that you can give him the ball in the tightest of situations and won't lose it - absolute "go to" man for that. A nailed on "get out of jail" for the rest of his midfield colleagues.
However as for spreading the ball about, switching play, changing the pace of the game or finding a killer pass - there are far better exponents.

He’s in the team to do what he did last night. You won’t see Casemiro making many eye-catching assists either but he’s one of the best central midfield players in the world.

What gets me about Nzonzi is when he played for us he wasn't terribly well appreciated. Home to Newcastle United 2014/15 I had a return to my youth because I started arguing with a bloke nearby me. Apparently the reason Steve always passed backwards was because he's a "backwards French cunt who needs to be fucked off" The crowd let out a collective groan a few minutes later when Steve passed sideways but it was the move that led to Crouchy's winner so that stopped everyone moaning at him for half an hour. Second half with a lead to defend and pegged back Nzonzi was again getting the blame. They reckoned was his passes that kept us under the cosh and the crowd weren't shy of letting him know it. Of course he could have twatted it forward and we lose the ball but that was a preposterous thing to add to the equation and I was told so in no uncertain terms. Next was away to Sunderland and we played pretty crap really and got beaten. BUT plenty of the Stokies in the upper tier knew whose fault it was. It was Steve's. I went for a half time piss and there was a lad venting his Nzonzi rage and decided he was only in the team because "he must do a fucking good blow job". Horrible things to say about your own players but that's how many saw him. Just a lucky lazy plodder. Of course in reality he's a smart player keeping the ball and fully aware of his role but sometimes that's lost on people So now when I see so many of us furious about him being elsewhere and doing well it's worth wondering why he wasn't fully accepted by lots of us until he left. Absolutely spot on. Your observation highlights the fact that so many of us know little about the technicalities of the game.

If he hadn't got injured we would have been far better last season, and this one too.

But we didn’t have to sell him when we did for a paltry fee , just another example of woeful commercial management , do you think he’d have left spurs for the same fee in the middle of the window Yes we did Prey tell me why , did you see what’s southampton did it’s van dyke , etc , we had a contract for another’s 12 months no court of law would say we had to sell him then we categorically did nit have to. Like investing we chose not to and are reaping the consequences year off all those poor decisions

Controls and dictates the game better than almost anyone. That is what he did well versus lingaard, Pogba etc... chasing and pressing him he just turned and said take it off me basically. He was excellent on the night. Love the fact he’s one tenth the price of Pogba but 100% a better player, money scrounging twats at Utd must be livid 😂

What do you mean 'allowed to run'. We can't put a gun to his head and make him sign and there was no reported interest in him up to that point. We did try and learn from the Nzonzi and Arnie incidents and now we have Imbula and Wimmer and Bojan on lengthy contracts we can't shift them from.

Also Arnie wasn't on his last year either he signed a new 4 year deal in 2016. H

We didn't get a great fee for N'Zonzi because none of the money bags Premier League clubs could see what a talent he was. The prejudice against SCFC amongst media pundits which still categorizes us a kick and rush team of cloggers, stopped the scouting teams and management of clubs like Arsenal, Man Utd and liverpool from identifying a player, who has shown in many big European ties, that he can control a game whilst looking like he is barely breaking sweat.
How embarrasing for Mourinho to see his £89M man get totally schooled by N'Zonzi in the last half hour.

I've said it since nzonzi left us but he's twice the player pogba is. He has better defensive qualities than pogba as well. A total rolls royce player and it was a pleasure to see him play for stoke. If no top 4 club picks him up he will go barca or madrid in the next couple of seasons.

He'd piss all over our entire midfield, on his own, with one leg tied behind his back.
Always destined for bigger and better. Arsenal should have snapped him up when they had chance.

Love the "it's not his job" argument 😂 Yet you’ve got nothing to counter it with... I've countered it many times. Some posters on here lavish him like he was some kind of god whilst he was here, and that was clearly not true. He was a good player, but we've had many of those over the past 10 years. He's done ok for himself, granted. He plays for a decent (not great) Spanish side, and that somehow makes people rewrite history that he was somehow some kind of "walks on water" genius when he was at our club. That isn't true. He had a couple of decent years followed by a really good one, which got him his move. That's it. He wasn't an outstanding player for us. And he isn't an outstanding player that will ever go onto to play for one of the big European teams.

Always rated him and was really disappointed when he left. Always seemed composed and with that extra time on the ball, which led to incorrect perceptions of half-arsedness.
My young lad is developing into a holding midfielder for his team and asks who to watch other than Kante. I tell him to watch N'Zonzi.
