The manager merry-go-round is fucking retarded. What other industry is there where you can be fired for being an abject failure at your job but then a few weeks later just walk straight into another job that pays you £millions per year for doing the exact same thing that you were recently sacked for being shit at? I can pretty much guarantee that if I blew millions of the company's cash on shit that didn't work and then accidentally blew the laboratory up through my own incompetence I'd never work in this field again. The truth is though that Hughes has not been an abject failure in any job he has held as a manager. Dress it up how you want to, he's left us for dead with his last couple of years of complete and utter mismanagement. He takes the blame for the rubbish signings, wasted millions, bizarre tactics and selections, clueless substitutions, and ultimately getting us relegated from what is probably the worst Premier League in history, in the same way that he got the plaudits for 'Stokealona'. You can't have it both ways. His legacy is that he spectacularly undid 9 years of hard work in the space of 2 years.

I do think if he was supported at the start of the season with Bauer, Staf and Badou we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in now. The board for me are more responsible. Selling Arni and replacing him with 2 frees one of whom had huge baggage was never going to end well. Stafywhathisname is utter dogshit.

If somehow you could forget the last 5 years and had to choose between Hughes and Lambert just on their CVs.
Which would you pick?

Unfortunately there is not enough time left this season for Hughes to get Southampton "Stoke fit".

I'm not saying Hughes hasn't made mistakes at every club he's managed, just saying he's never been an abject failure at any of them. All people have to do is to check the facts/stats of his record, it bears out that he has done well as a PL manager, I assume the Southampton Board checked those facts before appointing him.

Interesting graphic, I've said elsewhere we are a point a game team and have been for over a year, regardless of manager. Attachment Deleted

What it tells me is that there are no 'good managers' sitting there just waiting for a phone call. People on here seemed to think that was the case. Some still do. They've recruited a manager who made a decent squad a clusterfuck, and couldn't get key players match-fit. Short term that maybe won't be an issue. But if I was looking for a fiery, up and at 'em manager to come in, shake some people up, motivate a squad, and get people on the front foot, Hughes is the last manager I'd have gone for. Not that there are many options. His best hope, I think, is that his players have breathed a sigh of relief, and were playing within themselves under the old manager, and just the change itself, whoever the manager, will give them the push they need.

I think Hughes had to go because of results, transfer dealings and he had lost the support of most fans, however we had/have posters on here totally misrepresenting the facts about him. He had Blackburn at 6th and 7th in the PL, Fulham 8th, Stoke 9th three times and had saved QPR from relegation in his first few games with them. Mark Hughes has been and still is a good manager, the fact that it eventually went wrong for him here should never be allowed to alter that fact. Paul Lambert has a good record in the lower leagues and may well surprise people, if we go down though he will share some of the blame for that along with Hughes.

He is not good enough but he is still better than Lambert. As long as he is not going to participate in their new signings, he may keep them in the PL. "his worst decisions with Stoke were the new signings" How could he ?

There can't be many professions in life where you continue to gain employment after getting sacked for being wank. Hughes, Lambert, Hodgson, Moyes, and that bell end at the Baggies. It's not just them though. It's their whole hareem of perennial failures they take all over the place.

Hang on, what do you mean? Are you comparing Hughes 5 years ago to Lambert now? Because if we're literally just erasing the last five years (i.e. going back to 2013), I doubt you'd have found a single Stoke fan who would have even entertained taking Hughes over Lambert then.

Because if we're literally just erasing the last five years (i.e. going back to 2013), I doubt you'd have found a single Stoke fan who would have even entertained taking Hughes over Lambert then. Suppose you can take the question a few ways. I was basically just making the point that even after the last 2 seasons, he'd still almost certainly be a more attractive proposition than Lambert for an unspecified Club X. If I was chairman of a club, I'd probably avoid both - but would certainly have Hughes ahead of Lambert on any list. The fact Southampton have gone for Hughes while Lambert missed out to Nigel Adkins for the Hull job probably is quite revealing. But take the point re their standings in 2013, if we're literally going back 5 years and judging them as they were then. Lambert was one year into a Villa run that had started badly but had certainly not yet got calamitous, and the Norwich successes were fresher in the mind. And the Hughes we appointed was coming off QPR, which was probably his lowest point (arguably before now!) I think general football watchers do tend to struggle to assess Hughes, which is no surprise as I do too - and I've seen him up close for 5 years! How can you balance good - going on to pretty special - then veering off to utter calamity?

Just saying that in 2013 it certainly would have been a no-brainer - Hughes was an almost universally unpopular choice and seen as a failed has-been (sounds familiar eh). Lambert was a way better proposition then despite an underwhelming start at Villa.

not bothered. More interested about stoke city. Need to back our club in these next 2 months. May not face mark hughes next season . We were bad under hughes we proberly would have been cut a drift at the bottom and already relegated. He may take Wimmer Berahino with him to soton next season
