It’s a vast country with a massive population, 99.9% are decent law abiding citizens, it happens all over the world. I’m not sure what to make of gun control, does making it illegal make the problem go away? I don’t think it does but then what would make it go away? I'm not referring to the law abiding citizens, I'm talking about politicians, gun lobbies and other people in power who are complicit in the madness......... That’s cleared that up then. I won’t pretend to know anything about it to be honest, just what I hear on the increasingly rare “news” items I listen to. So in a nutshell, what are the suggestions to get control of this idiocy if anything?

The genie is arguably too far out of the bottle, the amount of guns circulating in the country is off the scale and it's ingrained in society. An attempt to bring in more stringent laws and some kind of amnesty on things such as assault rifles would at least be a start though, any real sea changes would take generations and some politicians seriously up for the fight though.......

I agree, this is the thing. It’s not going away, probably not within our life time. It’s sad to see, when I was over there recently I couldn’t wish for a pleasanter experience. It’s going to be very difficult for any politician to implement anything, maybe that’s why, they haven’t got the balls to be the first

Legislators are clearly not able to do anything, so I wonder if corporate America might? In the same way that anyone with "unfortunate" views rapidly apologises and "mis-spoke" or "was taken out of context" as soon as their sponsors start to walk away. It'd take some balls to potentially alienate half the population from your customer base, but I'd like to see big corporations taking a stand. Not entirely sure what form it'd take, but maybe moving out of states with looser gun laws, or those with higher gun murder rates; jobs and income disappearing from states might focus a few state politicians' minds more than rhetoric about gun control ever will. I realise it's unlikely since money talks, but nothing currently changes and people keep dying. Supreme Court extended gun rights rather than limiting them just this week by look of this: www.reuters.com/legal/government/us-supreme-court-strikes-down-new-york-limits-concealed-handguns-2022-06-23/I've no understanding how their system works but a former NYT/WSJ head honcho was on Radio 4 saying the 6 Republican judges were causing absolute carnage taking the piss with their majority

Having just seen the photograph of the alleged gunman ( it might not be his most flattering)
I wouldn’t of given him a license to carry a crayon never mind a fire arm Maybe the way forward is to start suing the salesman for negligence

Why are they so fucking adamant about having guns? Most of the rest of the planet manage to go about without needing to arm themselves to the tits, but America seem to have some sort of addiction to it. If this is what happens and continues to happen whilst they have these laws in place, why do think it's the best thing for them as a nation? Violence breeds violence and, unfortunately, like many things in America, they have too many stupid people (i.e. old men out of touch with reality) in charge of things in high places - see abortion laws for further evidence.
The country needs a massive overhaul, but it won't ever happen. Shame as it's a great place, but it's too far gone.

So in a nutshell, what are the suggestions to get control of this idiocy if anything? There has been an average of 11 mass shootings every week in the US this year. Honestly, I used to care a lot more about it, now I just hope that it isn’t my wife, wife’s family and myself that get caught in it. It’s not going to change. Countries that effectively ban guns have FAR less gun problems. That’s not going to happen here. They can’t even get AR-15’s out of people’s armories. Honestly, I’ve just thought about sending my kid (when I’m eventually blessed enough to have one) to boarding school in the UK.

Maine reports at least 16 dead.
Can we say much else once again apart from RIP to the victims.

A firearms instructor with mental health issues, who threatened in June to commit a mass shooting.
So sad.

Sadly, this kind of event is barely even newsworthy.
It's such a regular happening it's essentially become a 'part of life' in the United States. Almost normal.
There'll be a day or so of "thoughts and prayers" platitudes, there'll be the usual gun control 'debate', a brief flurry of interest when the gunman is arrested/killed then, just as quickly, it'll all be forgotten about, nothing will change and in a couple of months the next one will come along.
You wonder if it's even worth reporting. If these dickheads crave the notoriety and/or going out in a blaze of glory, then if that's denied them, would they think why bother? I don't know.
Madness.

Madness. there was an episode of South Park that made just this point, a school shooting happened and all the parents were bothered about was something entirely ridiculous, it happens so often very sad news though, having travelled through Maine its a beautiful part of the world with lovely people

I’m surprised it’s newsworthy anymore to be honest. It hits different now than it used to. You can see that when you talk to people as well. They just kind of shrug. You can still feel sorry for the victims while acknowledging that nothings going to change to prevent it in the future. It’ll be out of the news again in a day or so. Replaced by some mishap a celebrity had. In this case: Maine even has laws that would have stopped this person from keeping his guns: mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/15/title15sec393.htmlThey just couldn’t be arsed to check before releasing him.

Robert Card.
Had me looking up the origins and meaning of the phrase 'he's a card' and while I am wiser it's not a good fit here.

We currently have a shelter in place going around our city because a “heavily armed white male” is wandering around the street.
Guns aren’t going away.
