There will be a hurricane of migration if a) you lot with the ability to do something about it keep preferring instead to allow a net 600,000 to 1,000,000 additional people into the country every year and b) you row back on your climate change pledges, thereby enhancing the likelihood of climate induced migration in the future.

A very clever speech by Braverman. Although there was a sprinkling of truth in what she said it was designed to drown out the clear hypocrisy of her bias for right-wing extremism. Reminded me somewhat of Enoch Powell's 'River of Blood' speech. The irony is that (and she knows it) she was playing to the racist element in our society and that means votes. Much like Farage played the public sentiment at Brexit. A vile piece of work she is.

When you think about it, what else can they do, really? 13 years of Conservative austerity and Brexit and, not surprisingly, the country is in a much worse place: strikes everywhere, failing NHS, crumbling schools, shit in our rivers, fuel and food costs through the roof, people struggling to pay mortgages, unemployment on the rise, immigration at record levels, a sleaze-ridden government that clearly doesn't care any more, climate change and air quality targets abandoned, it goes on and on... ...what else can you do but appeal to the lowest common denominator of the electorate and hope you anger them enough about stuff that really makes little or no difference to their lives by way of distraction from the reality of their lives? Lives that these same people have made worse by their own electoral decisions! Tawdry stuff from Braverman, but predictable and unsurprising. |

But this is one of the unfortunate negatives of Brexit that nobody foresaw.
A lot of the present cabinet, cut their political teeth during the Brexit campaign, during which, they saw that a campaign of blatant lying, not only didn't result in any negative consequence for the perpetrators but it also delivered a win.
And they now believe that you can successfully run a country using the same tactics, using three word slogans and telling complete untruths ... you can't.
Of course in the past, politicians have distorted the truth and twisted statistics to suit their agenda but since Brexit, we now live in an age where just making up any old shit, has apparently, become perfectly acceptable.

I disagree with the Brexit part. There was always a debate and opinions (regardless of what view was taken) were challenged. IMO covid allowed this lot to run riot as neither the opposition or the media ever questioned what was going on. |
