John Major responds to the decision to cut aid spending... "It is, frankly, staggering that the only cut the government has made is to spending to help the poorest people on the planet in the middle of a pandemic, when this amounts to approximately 1pc of the borrowing on Covid in the past year. It seems that we can afford a 'national yacht' that no-one either wants or needs, whilst cutting help to some of the most miserable and destitute people in the world". Like I said yesterday, they know very well how their words and actions get received by certain sections of the electorate, this government. Maybe charity should begin at home...? Back here already. So soon? We are agreed that the government should not be cutting the foreign aid budget, the amount of borrowing to cover it is minimal compared with what we have to borrow to recover from the pandemic. However we should remember: 1. A lot of foreign aid does not actually get to the people who need it, or could be given to better causes. www.politico.eu/article/china-uk-foreign-aid-95-percent/I remember horror stories from the past of foreign aid going to countries spending it on arms, and even a ship load of whiskey once for one African government. Clearly the money could be distributed wisely and audited. It falls upon the Labour leader of the Commons select Committee, Sarah Champion, to closely monitor what the government is doing. 2. Even at 0.5% of GNI the UK is still one of the most generous countries in the world. Added to which there are the personal donations we all give to Oxfam, Christian Aid , etc. Only richer countries give more or richer countries per head give more per head than the UK. That is not a reason to give less, merely stating a fact. I query why Japan and Germany giving such huge quantities of aid to India? Why is the EU and France giving large amounts to Turkey? www.wristband.com/content/which-countries-provide-receive-most-foreign-aid/3. Part of the divorce bill with the EU goes towards commitments made when the UK was an EU member including foreign aid long term projects. The UK wil be contributing to the EU foreign aid budget till 2025: www.cgdev.org/publication/uks-fiscal-contribution-eu-budget-and-its-international-elementI agree that checks and proper auditing needs to take place on Aid distribution, in precisely the same way that checks and proper auditing needs to take place on companies linked to government ministers getting Covid contracts for PPE they have little or no previous experience of dealing with! Or dodgy planning deals. There's corruption everywhere, not least in our own government. To use that as an argument for cutting aid is to ignore what goes on in our own country! Every former prime minister has now criticised this decision along with the leader of the opposition as entirely counter-productive. But that's not really the point for this populist prime minister and his government - they know exactly how things like the failure to condemn racism and cutting foreign aid plays out with a large swathe of the electorate. This country is really not moving in a pleasant, compassionate direction at all. Those morons who stormed Wembley are just a manifestation of the inconsiderate, 'I'm alright, screw everyone else' approach that our leaders demonstrate daily.

A needless own goal by the government. It’s astonishing how intelligent people can be so stupid.

Is it stupidity, or just thinking that they are above everybody else? You have to wonder how long this can last...

I’d suggest stupidity Though it does make you wonder why Starmer can’t land a glove on them Though when you look at the shadow health Secretary you realise why Even Hancock looked competent compared to the dithering (the governments being reckless but but but we would still do it anyway ) ashworth

One hiker, let’s call him Boris, calmly removes his boots and puts on a pair of running shoes. The other hiker, Keir, looks on incredulously. “You can’t outrun a bear” he says. “I don’t need to” comes the reply. “I just need to outrun you”.

Is there anything wrong with the current judicial review process? What could this government in particular gain from limiting the JR process? A worrying erosion of justice? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57909168

Don't think anyone is bothered, Huddy, sleaze is pretty normal for this lot and doesn't seem to matter to the public.
