The UK left the EU in 2020. In 2020 food inflation was negative, food prices dropped when the UK left the EU. tradingeconomics.com/united-kingdom/food-inflationThen Russia invaded Ukraine the "bread basket" of Europe supplying huge quantities of cereals and sunflower seeds which are used in a vast amount of processed foods and world food prices rocketed. The costs of checking imports is minimal, see Brexit thread, and should be done to protect British consumers. It also restores a level playing field for British farmers who have had to contend with subsidised imports from the EU. The timing of introducing checks is to coincide with dropping food inflation which is already less than some EU countries, and falling fast as we come into summer. This is a step in the right direction towards greater food self sufficiency. Buy British and support British farmers. A lot of EU food comes from Ireland and there are no checks (yet) on imports from Ireland.

So yesterday on the radio afresh food importer described the new border checks as the most inefficient in the world.
This morning another importer was explaining that the way this govt have set up the checks will adversely impact small-medium businesses as , unlike the checks set up by the EU we are not basing the checks on tonnage. He described this as the straw that could break some backs of those already struggling since Brexit.
The second importer on the programme explained that an hour of checks would be about £100-£150 , but if they unload the truck to inspect all the contents and take samples that will take 4 hours. And if the plants he is importing have to wait 2 weeks then the whole shipment would be ruined at a cost of tens of thousands. Hopefully that will not be the case but of course the Tories, after 4 years of Brexit and 8 years since refrendum, have been incapable of putting a scheme on place with sufficient information. Thank fuck we had delays to Brexit - Brexiters should be grateful to remain MPs for delaying this clusterfuck.

1. The costs of checking imports is minimal, see Brexit thread, and should be done to protect British consumers 2.
1. Subjective again Mr Coke, the UK left the EU in the period which coincided exactly with Covid and Food Inflation fell marginally from 1.4% to -0.4%. You fail to mention the Food Inflation spike of 4% immediately after Referendum in your link. 2. So what you are saying is that UK Farmers are at a disadvantage to EU Farmers who receive Subsidies under CAP 2 versus what UK Farmers receive in Subsidies from UK Government Replacement ELMS. You have previously maintained that ELMS was better than CAP 2, both of these contradictionary positions can't be true, which is it you believe? Overall you again miss the main point, the number 1 of 15 pledges Vote Leave made was Trade with the EU will be tariff-free and involve minimal bureaucracy. Now it is expected that Politicians will lie but to have virtually all pledges to be bogus is some achievement, I say virtually because VAT was removed from Sanitary Products You also seem to overlook that Inflation is Cumulative and Additive and while the latest additional costs to be passed on to the Consumer is not massive it will have an added effect on prices and availability of certain products and scarcity of others. As per usual the poorest in Society suffer the most as they spend more as a percentage of their income on Food thus they will search for cheaper products and consume less continuing the downward physical and mental health spiral.

On the positive side labour have been receiving donations from the owners of Iceland and sainsbury. So presume this means that when labour come in food prices will come down because owners of big business always donate to parties who put the consumer before profits. Right? That's how it works isn't it? Icelandnd boss seams to be doing alot allready on keeping prices down and cutting them also does pensioner and NHS days and alot of charity work

I think we need a live streamed debate between Mr coke and wannabe some day I like Mr Coke tbh Just disagree with everything he says about Brexit He's represntitive of a body of the population who have been utterly swindled by the liars and conmen who proposed Brexit with no plan Of course many similar to Mr Coke will have realised that not only was it all bollocks but also a shambles

Boris is smarter than he gets credit for. He's a very calculated man who we've all seen scruff himself up to try and give a disheveled look which some find endearing.
He was PM when the elections act 2022 was introduced.
I don't think he's dumb enough to do this. The fact he brought an envelope with his name and address on it shows that it was pre meditated.
Wonder if it's some stunt and will be used to try and give confidence in the changes imposed in the gerrymandering election act 2022.
There's defo a play of some sort here. Even I know he's not that thick.

Really don't think it's to do with him being thick or making a play.
Rather, it's just another example of privilege and him believing that the rules couldn't ever apply to him, after all, he was/still is, the King of the World!

Surely the objective is to win seats which seems unlikely tonight although very early days Why would they need to add a serial UK Election loser to their ranks?

Of course that should be the objective but it's incredibly challenging in FPTP. Next best thing is having a good vote share which breeds confidence thst they can win a seat and leads to more voters supporting them as they don't think it's a waste.

Good to see independants doing better than forecast.
Already gained 39 seats and outdone the above prediction.
Hopefully this is a good indicator for the North East election and independant Mayor Jamie ODriscoll gets elected.
