Motty is ace. Lovable loony. Hope has a happy retirement and remembers to go on telly now and then.

Motty retires from MOTD, will be missed, never showed any bias unlike some modern tv pundits. I actually preferred the craziness (at times) of "Look at his face, just look at HIS face" Barry Davies, flexible into other sports too, as also was the very good David Coleman.

.....his dubbed-on-later clever-dick commentaries will not be missed by me ........
"Stoke better be careful here or Arsenal will exploit that space down the right ...........oh and they have 1 - 0 Arsenal" .......

Lost it about 5 years ago so about time. All he does is screech and regurgitate old strap lines. Also massively biased to the big clubs.

Sorry but unlike the Benaud's , O'Sullevan's, McLaren's of their respective sports I can't look back at Motty and think he added anything to his sport. In fact he was very annoying. He seemed to just write down a load of (largely irrelevant) statistics before a game started and then start rambling on about them totally ignoring what was going on on the park in front of him. Barry Davies was a better commentator of the era but it has to be said that for a sport on the scale football is in this country good ones are few and far between.

Yeah Motty - I liked his quirky facts that he would come out with -
But it has to be said he was pretty boring overall and using the same old cliches time and time again.
Is he really retiring or was he pushed out? It sounds like he will continue work outside the BBC so maybe he has been quietly pushed out the door.

I grew up listening to Motty, cannot forget his commentary at Italia 1990 and the 2 that stand out for me was when Platt scored in extra time vs Belgium and Lineker equalised against Germany (Sorry Bayern!, both still give me goosebumps. Love the bloke and wish him all the very best

A commentator of his time who should have been shelved long ago but the BBC turned him into some loveable piece of old furniture that could not be thrown out.
People seem to get easliy annoyed by commentators and thir co-partners, I can take or leave most of them, but Motty riled me like no other with his fence-sitting, ambiguity and bumbling nonsense.
Met the bloke too when he was doing his tour of the 92 grounds (in the Waddington suite at the Brit) - may have caught him on an off-day but frosty & aloof was the best way to describe him.

He was thrown in at the deep end when a learnee commentating on the famous Hereford Utd vs Newcastle cup tie in 1972. The game was meant to be a few minute support match on MOTD but the result made it the featured game.

Excellent news. Can anyone remember when commentators were just there to relay information about subs, extra time and just get excitable about goal threats / goals?
Much rather go back to that than have some prick like Savage giving their opinions on everything or every player that has the ball.

Excellent news. Can anyone remember when commentators were just there to relay information about subs, extra time and just get excitable about goal threats / goals? When later on Tyne Tees, Kenneth Wolstenholme spoke even less than that. Just got the odd "great goal by Spraggon" (Middlesbrough) etc. I was a bit surprised after his fame from Wembley 66.

... always remember the big sheepskin coat. Surely he has to be senile by now? Of course you do as he still wears it - in the fucking summer too - as he has become a banal caricature of himself. I bet for the last 10 yrs the Beeb have insisted he wears it as the miserable old scrote has to get 'into character' for each appearance.
