That useless tool on ITV can stand down too! The one that does the England matches, I think his name is Clive Tyldesly. Talk about stating the bleeding obvious and spouting absolute trivia. Every time he opens his mouth inane drivel ensues!!!

The announcement was ace.
"Oh..and I'm retiring at the end of the season! Or am I? Well, in actual fact, it looks like I might be carrying on! Oh...no, I think I have called it a day after all, haven't I? Yes, I am announcing my retirement there. (chuckles) Well, Trevor, that was an extraordinary sequence of events..."

People look at Hugh Johns with nostalgia but at the time people moaned about him. Not with the vicious nastiness of these days but he was regarded as an irritant.

He also did FA cup round 3 when Motd had an extra game or 2 on.

Sunday afternoons Itv coverage had the big cinema fan Sinstadt on Granada, the Leeds Utd creep Keith Macklin on Yorkshire, Huge Johns on Midlands, Moorey on London & south, oldy Wolstenholme on Tyne-Tees and the good commentator for East Anglia Gerry Harrison(?). Not sure who did west/south west.

Motty retires from MOTD, will be missed, never showed any bias unlike some modern tv pundits. I actually preferred the craziness (at times) of "Look at his face, just look at HIS face" Barry Davies, flexible into other sports too, as also was the very good David Coleman. Coleman was very authoritarian. Like a headmaster from the 1950s. "Goals pay the rent and Keegan does his shift". One nil!

I quite liked Coleman - he was the first of the 'dramatic' commentators, unlike the preceding clipped RP type BBC ones who didn't really add much. He did become a bit of a parody of himself eventually though and that Keegan quote doesn't even make sense! Motty was ok but should've given up ten years ago. All ITV commentators are utter shit.

I had the displeasure of meeting him several years back and I found him to be an arrogant, obnoxious cunt to be honest. I never met him but always imagined him to be an arrogant, obnoxious cunt. Always managed to ruin any match he ever commentated on. MOTD may be a little more bearable without him.

Who was the commentator that covered the East Anglia games? Was it Gerald Sinstadt - not sure if spelling

Was it Gerald Sinstadt - not sure if spelling As I mentioned earlier, Gerry Harrison was Anglia chap, Ipswich were the top team there at the time. Sinstadt was the Granada area which some in Stoke area could get as well as Midlands. Sinstadt later went on to cover cinema....in white stuff!

Unfortunate enough to have dealings with the man some years ago in my job. A deeply unpleasant individual. Don't tell half a tale The bloke is just a complete bell end and I could tell a few stories about him but the one that marked him out as an arsehole is when the firm I worked for sent him some correspondence and addressed him as John Motson obe with the OBE in lower case. Not the best customer service admittedly but he went completely over the top and went to Director level in the company to try and get the 20 year old girl who sent the letter sacked. As usual with John, lots and lots of free product calmed him down. Twat!

Always struck me as one of those minor TV personalities who believe that they're a national institution. Probably partially down to the broadcaster blowing smoke up their arses whenever possible.
Deadline Day Jim White strikes me as being another one.

People look at Hugh Johns with nostalgia but at the time people moaned about him. Not with the vicious nastiness of these days but he was regarded as an irritant. I was one of a generation of kids who grew up with Star Soccer on a Sunday afternoon. If I'm ever having a kick about or game of footy now, I still say in my best staccato Hugh Johns voice - "Jimmy Greenhoff! One nothing Stoke Ciddee!"
