Whatever it was added for, Stoke still isn't in the North West.
Obviously it isn't to you, Paul. You have made that very clear. But to many of my generation (and I am older than you) and to many Stokies of all ages it is culturally much closer to the North West than it is to the Midlands. Put it this way, County boundaries are a bit of an anachronism in many parts of the country because, since the counties were created, populations and work places have expanded and contracted. In some places this has been recognised by the created of newer, large, Metropolitan areas. There was, for example, no Greater Manchester when I was a lad. And I was born in Lancashire - in Warrington - which is now part of Cheshire. Were we to scrap the County boundaries and start afresh, the chances are SOT, most of Cheshire and parts of Northern Shropshire.might become a new super county - hopefully as part of the North West Power House so beloved of George Osborne.
To be fair you've added a new word now John ... 'culturally'.
If you had used it originally, then we wouldn't have had this discussion.
And I certainly wouldn't argue for a moment that Stoke may indeed be 'culturally' much closer to the North West than the midlands but geographically it is in the West Midlands.
If a primary school child was set a geography question on Monday asking if Stoke-on-Trent was in the North West or in the West Midlands, they would get the answer wrong if they answered in the North West and they would get the question right if they answered that it was in the West Midlands.
Oh and there's no way that Cheshire would become a part of any new super county either!

The county of Staffordshire is in the West Midlands region and Cheshire is in the North West region so the North does indeed start on the county boundary just past Talke!

That is no way to talk about the County which is (now) the County of my Birth!

I didn't realise you were from Warrington John, my mum is form Stockton Heath, that is, before she became posh and moved to South Cheshire.

My parents lived in Grappenhall at the time I was born. My dad's father and brothers ran Paterson's garage at Latchford near the swing bridge. As I said earlier - I was born in Lancashire but it is now in Cheshire.

I suppose it was about half a mile from the swing bridge on the way into town. Originally, at the time I was born, my grandparents lived in a Georgian House (two staircases - very posh) with a small car parts shop at the front and 3 petrol pumps (they Sold National Benzol fuel when I was a lad!!!!) and at the rear of the property was a repair and service garage. I know at one time there were plans to build a new garage on the opposite side of the road. I'm not sure if that ever happened. They did expand into Cheshire and open a new service station, Colt/Mitsubishi car sales and cafe at "Tall Trees" Little Leigh near Comberbatch. But as I said I can't remember if this was instead of or in addition to the planned new service station at Latchford.

I've lived in this part of the world on and off for the past 50 years - I think I know where you mean. About 10 minutes from where I am now. (Can't imagine what such a big property as the one you describe would retail for now !) Anyway Warrington Town just up the road from you grandparents (although they were probably still Stockton Heath Albion back in those days) are having a great season, the Football League is a definite target in the not too distant future!

Yes, I doubt if the house would have been demolished had they known what was going to happen to house prices.
