Quite a good debate this morning on talksport, they were asking for people's opinions on the three biggest clubs in London and in what order they'd be. Some good calls and interesting to hear what people thought of the likes of Chelsea maybe not being one of the top 3 until Abramovic arrived. Got me thinking about the midlands and in which order a top 5 would be and where would we fit in?

If you watch Midlands today or Central news, it usually depends....if other midlands teams are playing then we're not but if they have fuck all else to report we suddenly are. On Midlands today this evening, they covered the Saido drug/spiking story...they didn't say "Stoke player" they said "Former West Bromwich Albion striker". Tells you all you need to know really.

If you think we're not in the midlands, just click off this and look at something else. No pressure, just thought I'd post it

Stoke is definitely where the north meets the Midlands.
I see myself as a northerner over a Midlander.
My old boss from Portsmouth considered Stoke as where the north starts.
And let's be honest Birmingham is the biggest shithole in the country so it's best not to be associated with it.

Not like TalkSport to be going all London-centric!
For what it's worth I've always seen the Potteries as having more in common with Northern towns than the Midlands but safe to say neither region want anything to do with us!

Stoke, first of the Northern Cities as far as I am concerned.

Yeah, I knew some would wonder whether we're midlands or north west, but I've always felt more of a derby atmosphere was present in games against west brom, wolves and Birmingham rather than man city, Everton or Wigan

I wonder how we'll feel in 15-20 years time if we manage to keep our top division status for that long?

For the Midlands, it's Villa by a mile then about 3 or 4 clubs joint secondish, which includes us.

Might have something to do with the fact he was with West Brom when he did it....and they don't want to have to drag Stoke's name into it???? Dunno, might be???? 🤔

For the Midlands is tough. Villa are by some distance the biggest club, but then ourselves, Birmingham, Derby, Coventry, Forest, Leicester, WBA & Wolves have virtually nothing between us. You could take pretty much any 5-10 year period you wanted & say some of them are 'way bigger' than others, but then jump forward 5-10 years & you'll normally find it's flipped on its head... A sure fire sign that we're all pretty much equal.
In London it is, and always has been, Arsenal - Chelsea - Tottenham, in that order. Anyone thinking otherwise, especially the 'Chelsea were nobodies untill Abramovich came along' people really need to look up some of the crowds Chelsea used to get before they were blighted more than most in the hooligan years.

That's why it's such a good debate TDC, there is no way of proving anything. I agree entirely with your conclusion on the Midlands scene but I have Spurs down as second in London after Arsenal by a distance. I think Spurs could fill Wembley way easier than Chelsea could week after week. (not thst that's the only factor)

Villa biggest by fucking miles, then the rest are all much of a muchness in terms of size really... us, Brum, Baggies, Wolves, Leicester, Forest, Derby. If we're talking historically I think we'd do well to secure a place in the top five to be honest, although recent history is in our favour of course.

It's hard to say we're definitely northern or midlands, and always has been. North Staffs has always been pretty unique I'd say we're probably culturally northern.
Does the north start somewhere around Betley/Kidsgrove/Talke, and the midlands somewhere around Stone?
In terms of the midlands, the longer the likes of Wolves, Derby, and Forest keep messing it up, suppose we gradually creep up the list a bit.
I still wouldn't put us level with Wolves/Derby/Forest in that gaggle of clubs quite a distance behind Villa. But our star is rising and theirs isn't as they're wading in the Championship mud.
I'd have us nudging comfortably clear of Coventry after their disastrous decade and probably Birmingham, who've never hit the heights. I've always had us level pegging with West Brom.
Leicester's a tricky one - you'd have to say they're marginally ahead after the title.

You do have to throw in with us that we're a small city (a tenth the size of Birmingham and the Black Country) and we are a two club city. Forest are a samllish club who had a genius sprinkling fairy dust on them and to a degree he did the same with Derby. I think we hold our own in joint second/third after Villa considering everything.

If we are going down the Midlands route I would say Wolves and Derby have always out-weighed us (Villa obviously are on a different level). Brum, Forest, Leicester, Albion are there or thereabouts with us. Nothing to be ashamed of when you take into account the two club thing and our stunning lack of tangible success over the decades. As FM says though it's a moveable feast so in 10 years time who knows!

Ok, my top 5 I'd have to go for..... 1st villa 2nd derby 3rd Leicester 4th Birmingham 5th Stoke/wba/wolves I can just about understand Derby given they won the league a couple of times but how do you work out Leicester third? What have they got to shout about over the other clubs you've mentioned there? And where are Forest?

Audlem is the first town in the north
But you need to draw a diagonal line from Audlem to Talke Pits and anything to the north west of that line is in the, erm ... North West and anything to the south east of it, is in the midlands. Audley is in the north west but Chesterton is in the midlands, even though there's only a couple of miles between them.
You're midlanders, don't ever forget it either ...
