Today I sat on an FA disciplinary panel with Marvin Robinson. Over lunch we recalled his 3-game loan spell with us in 2000 which ended with that horrific leg break against Rotherham after he had looked very good in his first two games. He said he has never forgotten the hundreds of get well letters and cards he received from Stokies after that misfortune. I thought that was worth passing on.

I was at that game, Malcolm - close enough to see the incident clearly. I'm glad he remembers us fondly - you are right he looked to be a good prospect. Its a bit of a shock to read that is was in 2000. Time does seem to fly by far too quickly these days.

I've never forgotten that incident, at least I think not. As I recall he was playing whilst wearing an electronic tag for some misdemeanour or other. And he only got hurt because he ran flat out to close down the opposition keeper, and threw himself into a challenge that most players wouldn't have bothered to make. It was typical of the workrate and commitment that endeared him to the fans during his brief stay here. Then when his leg broke in the challenge, I can still see his face now; eyes bulging out of their sockets in shock, and his jaw dropping wide open because of the pain.
Then his missus and kids ran out onto the pitch to be comfort him. Seemed like an eternity for the ambulance to show up.
The most telling thing about the incident was the way he absolutely sat still as could be, so as not to move his leg one centimetre. I learnt something that day that if someone's genuinely badly hurt, they stay absolutely still, rather than rolling about pretending to be hurt: a la every Arsenal player ever.

I'd forgotten his Mrs and Kids came onto the pitch. It was such a shame. He looked ideal for us at the time. he had the work rate but appeared to have that bit about him to grab a goal or two. Where was he on loan to us from? Was in Derby??

The player he went into the challenge with was Dave Artell, the current Crewe manager.

Is this right I thought Aaron Ramsey was the first footballer ever to break his leg.
I remember the game too, shame for the lad his career never really recovered.

As above I was sat near the incident and his wife etc coming on. I had to ask my kids to look away.
I remember very much how the long in took the St Johns Ambulance people to act I was shouting at them to assist they seemed so old and oblivious to the situation. After they finally got on and formed a stretcher barrier so Marvin could receive treatment. I know as a rule St J Amb do a great job but on this occasion it was frightening.

Wasn't one of his 3 games a Derby against Vale? Yeah it was. At Vale park on a Sunday televised game if I remember right. Pretty sure he hit the bar but might be mistaken.

Wasn't one of his 3 games a Derby against Vale? Yes he told me he got man of the match against Vale and scored against Oxford in the two games before the injury. He's still only 36 and has recently been appointed as No.2 at Hendsford.

Was that the Oxford game when there was petrol shortages or am I thinking of another game against Oxford? If it is I always remember the Mrs playing hell because I was making a round trip of 80 miles and wasting the petrol😄Wasting?😮I'd have never forgiven her if I'd missed a 4-0 win😄

Nah, there's been plenty of broken legs in the history of football.....but that's part and parcel of football!!! Ramsey's was totally totally TOTALLY different!!! 😉

I was in row 11 boothen end, was thinking 7 years ago... then realised no 17 years ago, his bloody leg break is nearly old enough to buy a pint. On a different note when does this ground become no longer the "new ground" it's scary to think that a whole generation of Stokies have no idea or recollection of what was before.

Just having a quick look at his career on wikipedia after he left Stoke. Christ, talk about journeyman. Never settled anywhere for long did he. How strange that a player who showed such promise and workrate at Stoke was shipped out pretty quickly by almost every club that had him.
