Great pic isn't it? Apparently taken in 1935. I've seen lots of interesting aerial photos of Newcastle from around the same period. I think some guy must have been flying round the area in his plane getting snap happy.

Does anybody know when the Stoke End was first terraced or when the stands were built?

How did they get on to the Stoke End? Can't see any steps, etc. To be honest March the access wasn't much better in the 1970s I remember the mauling various away fans gave out and got coming down that bank. As a nipper obviously

Does anybody know when the Stoke End was first terraced or when the stands were built? According to Simon Inglis in his Grounds of Great Britain book, both the Boothen End and Stoke End were terraced in 1936, which was obviously around the time Stanley Matthews burst into the scene and crowds improved. The Butler Street stand was also completed that year when the corners were completed.... The Boothen Stand was started in 1960 and completed within a couple of years and the Stoke End Stand opened in late 1979.

Good answer(s) Dave.
I was just out walking the dog and I was thinking to myself, when did the Stoke End stand open? And I'd plumped for 79 or 80.

Joking apart, I guess there's a pretty good chance that there might be a handful of people still alive who do remember it like that.
Somebody who was seven at the time would be 89 now, so you never know.
Does anybody on here remember the gas tower?

I'm sure the Gas tower was still there in the 1960s.

There doesn't look like there was enough room to build the Boothen Stand between the pitch and the road. I wonder if the pitch got moved to the left or if some of the end terraces were knocked down to make room?
