Not really looked at any coverage of the civil case. I think he shot himself in the foot by not attending. Then again, he probably would have made matters worse for himself. I can’t stand Trump. However, I am surprised that there was enough in it to convince people that sexual abuse happened 30 odd years ago.

Bit rapey around the edges. I could probably cultivate my hair like that but it’d be black and grey. Probably have more gravitas as an evil overlord as well

We're definitely living through something historic.
Will the Republicans succeed in turning the US into a state more like Putin's Russia, with the Supreme Party Leader above Law and voters, or will the US be able to claw its way back towards free and fair elections?
Democracy looks like it's on the ropes IMO.

Democracy looks like it's on the ropes IMO. If you wanted to sow the seeds of widespread civil unrest this is a good start. Whenever there are big demos and counter-demos it rarely seems to turn into the kind of gun battle like I assume it's always going to. Perhaps this might kick it all off? Or maybe the majority of Americans just don't give a shit? One good thing about being utterly apathetic about politics in a country with a very comfortable way of life I guess.

Read a great bit on an interview de Santis gave earlier. Firstly he 'vowed' that if he got in he would end political interference in the judiciary. He then went on to suggest that if Trump got convicted be would pardon him (so no interference there). He was then asked what he thought of some of the detail of the indictment and replied be didn't know because he hadn'd read it. And apparently he's the one 'with brains'

A big part of their strategy during the Obama years was to block justices' appointments to the bench, including a Supreme Court spot. Then Trump got in and filled them. Once Republicans control the courts and re-write enough laws to prevent free and fair elections in more and more states, they will be effectively un-removable.

And when the Supreme Court tells them no, Republicans just ignore them anyways: looking at you Alabama. The party of “law and order” 😂

Interesting comments from a history professor. If Pence had gone along with the coup attempt then it seems the Republicans had a plan to install fake electors to keep Trump in power. Then would be down to the military, would they have stood up for democracy or been deployed to crush dissent? Unless voters thoroughly reject this approach then we might see the end of US democracy in our lifetimes.

It’s ingrained in them to do as they're told. It’s also ingrained in them to love their country. I suppose it would come down to how much they believed Trump’s lie. Importantly, it would also come down to what their leadership would say. Many US military leaders did not like Trump.

Military tends to always be right leaning though. So I think they'd back Trump. I may be wrong though. The military in the uk has always been very right leaning too for instance.

I think that's why DeSantis is preparing his own loyalist state army and the Republicans are trying to block promotions. If Trump wins in 2024 but Republicans lose in 2028, according to some of his own people, the plan was and is to use the army to put down pro-democracy protestors. He'll spend 4 years putting his loyalists in power. Will the army then be willing to slaughter thousands of "traitorous libs" to ensure the Party keeps its grip on power? We're living through crazy times in history.

I just don’t see it happening based on the people that I’ve met. I am SURE that there would be some in the military that would consider it but I personally believe that it would be a minority. Trump placed loyalists in command in his first term. He had Pence there (who was somehow made to seem normal in his presence), yet Pence understood his role. He put in a huge number of judges, he made as many changes as he could to federal law enforcement. Nothing came of it. In the end, Trump’s plan was concocted by himself and some moronic conspiracy theory lawyers who were desperate to sample the teat of power. There are checks and balances in the US for a reason and I just don’t see Trump managing to undo that. If he does. I’ll move to Canada.

The prosecutor Trump sent after Biden's son Hunter has just been promoted to Special Counsel.
I think it's good when people can get investigated even when their family is powerful. And the investigator being the one Trump picked says it'll be done seriously 👍

Nobody is above the law and that should include Hunter Biden just as it should include the crazy guy that is Trump. No plea bargaining... send the sods to jail for what they've done if found guilty. OS.
