To be fair, i went to school in the 80s/early 90s and they never taught anything about where places are in Geography. It was all how oxbow lakes are formed and that kind of shit. I think for most people knowing where places are in a country is usually more something you just subconsciously learn as you get older and have to travel around with work, family, as friends move away etc. These guys are Uni students, so won't have travelled further than their 1) their home 2) their uni 3) their local offy (at home and uni..although nowadays, they probably get them to deliver anyway)
According to Mrs. Thatcher's Chief Inspector of Schools, Geography was "A toxic mix of New Age mysticism and political correctness". As a former Geography teacher, I do not recognise this description of the subject. As well as places, it deals with many issues relevant to the modern era including the causes of climate change which some go in to denial about. Nevertheless I would expect a well educated University Undergraduate or PhD student to have acquired a basic knowledge of where places are in their own country.
Nowadays?
Sadly, if it's not mentioned on tiktok, it just doesn't exist.

I think you are right. Apart from physical geography at school (I always know what an isthmus is in a quiz ) we were taught what towns/cities were famous for, many of which live on in football club nicknames, but also Nottingham lace, Redditch needles, etc. Then there were educational hobbies like train spotting. World geography is also poor with the young generation, but then many of my generation were stamp collectors and spent hours looking at maps instead of computer games. That reminds me of the guys who were discussing their holidays. One said "We went to Ibeza". The other asked where's that?", to which the answer was "I don't know, we went by plane."

Probably as good as reason as ever. You're not going to know where Plymouth is by playing 1/2 life. I think as kids we just took an interest where we were, I don't remember Geography described as Snatcher describes it, but then she was always a bit odd. Still, if I'm ever up against them on tipping point, happy days.

bennett looks like a serial killer. edit: i’m surprised tom cruise isn’t there. Much better assortment this week, at least they knew stuff! agreed, but hardly difficult to beat glasgow’s offering last week. apparently, portsmouth is about 30 miles inland! try telling that to the royal navy a close call between two good teams, but fully expect ucl to be back in the playoffs with a good chance of progressing - they’re too good to leave now.

Much better showing this week.
Interesting to see the cream rise to the top with an Oxford college of circa 460 students beating the largest university (bar the Open) of 41,000 students.
Their knowledge of classics of art and music was impressive, or they are very good guessers!

I could pick out African countries on a map and know their capitals, US States and capitals but am useless on UK geography . A few years ago I had to go to Bath and for some reason thought was near York and my sat nav was playing up. Football grounds helps as mentioned above. Need to go to Bedford next month, looked up yesterday and had no idea what part of the country is in. UK geog often catches contestants out on Millionaire I noticed over the years.

This reminds me of an occasion when I visited Media City and returning on the tram, two young B.B.C. internees sitting in front of me, were carrying on a conversation and neither of them knew where Leicester was. Apparently, "they didn't study the geography of the U.K. when they were at prep school".I was not surprised as when after taking my Dip. Ed. I taught for a brief period in a Public School. The boys who came top in the Common Entrance Exam were told they were to do Greek; the next tranche did German and the rest did Geography. Most of the Undergraduates at my Cambridge College came from state Grammar Schools.

As for the rap music (on again tonight), as egg head Chris Hughes says they forgot the "c" at the beginning of the name.

I usually get 5 or 6 questions right each week, but how the hell do they know what they know ? At such a relatively young age as well. I know some are actually studying/reading the subjects, but quite often when the contestants say what they're reading at the start of the programme their subjects bear no relation to the questions asked yet they still get the question right. Some colleges/unis are obviously very Iimited in their subject range/s, and it shows in their inability to answer, but quite often some contestants seem able to answer a much wider range of questions than their specific subject should allow. I usually struggle with Greek mythology, chemistry/physics, some classical music (as has been said, I can get the composer but not the piece), but I can have a go at most subjects, but haven't got a clue with some questions.

I usually struggle with Greek mythology, chemistry/physics, some classical music (as has been said, I can get the composer but not the piece), but I can have a go at most subjects, but haven't got a clue with some questions. To pick up on memory, the chaser The Beast once said when asked that from a very young age he found that he had a brain that was like sticking plaster, he just found he remembered everything. Paul Daniels said he trained his brain to remember by forming visual images. He could be introduced to 50 people in a room and remember everyone's name. There is a theory you remember what you are interested in much better and the brain automatically dismisses information not interested in, or needed again. I think this is a reason why young people don't seem to do well in quizes. It's not that they are thick, it's more that history is not relevant; why should the brain remember when all the information you need in available instantly online. The chess grand master Alekhine could play a huge number of simultaneous games blindfold, remembering the positions of every game he was playing. learningchess.net/blog/?p=783I also think there is a difference between storing information in the brain and the ability to recall. Recall deteriorates as you get old and brain cells die. I often know the answer but can't recall it quickly these days. There is a theory that the subconscious remembers everything. If true that would explain intuition which I've found women are very good at. I once knew a young man who was a whizz on computers but could never remember where he had left his car.

I thought the Durham captain tonight was very poor. The guy to her right (camera left) should have been their captain, far more knowledgeable and better at intuitive guesses.
Again UK geography was poor, but knowledge of classical music very good.
