The good students of Reading are boycotting University Challenge.
"I think they're referring to a recording of University Challenge which took place in February 2015, though I am baffled at why it has become an issue a year-and-a-half later.
"There was a technical fault which meant we had to interrupt the recording, leaving all of us sitting at our desks in the studio while the problem was sorted out in the control gallery.
"In the conversation to fill the void - in a brightly lit studio, in front of all eight contestants, a full studio crew and an audience of several hundred spectators - I asked the Reading team about the mascot sitting on their desk.
"One of them said it was a hand-knitted Jeremy Paxman doll. Across the several yards separating the chairman's desk from the teams, I asked the whole team whether they took it to bed with them.
"Though no complaint was made at the time, this, apparently, is what has upset them."

No point taking an economics exam now-a-days anyway is there? As Donald Trump has showed, economics is just a case of saying there'll be a jobs and wearing a cap with a nice slogan on.

Doesn't surprise me, mate. As we showed the otherday, no-one goes to Yale actually looking to learn anything nowadays, it's all just about creating segregation safe spaces.

i’m amazed glasgow managed to find their way to the university challenge studio. Unbelievable wasn’t it? The odd thing is, they knew a lot about African geography. Make of that what you will.

I just watch it to read the insults directed at the contestants on twitter at the same time.
That followed by Nigella around Christmas time last year was outstanding. Bunch of middle aged dad's sleazing over her, bunch of middle aged mum's lusting over her pantry contents and latest utensil

I enjoy watching University Challenge. One student last time round knew that Stanley Matthews was born in Hanley! My only gripe is that about 90% of the students come from south of a line drawn from Birmingham to the Wash and their knowledge of northern Geography (National Parks etc.) is abysmal.

One of the worst contestants that I have ever seen on University Challenge, was Monty Panesar.
It was the 2020 Christmas Celebrity edition.
Monty was representing Loughborough University. He never even attempted to answer one question. He just sat there looking confused.

These are UNI students? Geezuz.

I thought the knowledge of UK geography last night was appallingly bad. What do schools teach these days? How to pass a exam To be fair, i went to school in the 80s/early 90s and they never taught anything about where places are in Geography. It was all how oxbow lakes are formed and that kind of shit.
I think for most people knowing where places are in a country is usually more something you just subconsciously learn as you get older and have to travel around with work, family, as friends move away etc. These guys are Uni students, so won't have travelled further than their 1) their home 2) their uni 3) their local offy (at home and uni..although nowadays, they probably get them to deliver anyway)

According to Mrs. Thatcher's Chief Inspector of Schools, Geography was "A toxic mix of New Age mysticism and political correctness". As a former Geography teacher, I do not recognise this description of the subject. As well as places, it deals with many issues relevant to the modern era including the causes of climate change which some go in to denial about. Nevertheless I would expect a well educated University Undergraduate or PhD student to have acquired a basic knowledge of where places are in their own country.
