That wouldn't be a bad signing. He's more than competent on an average day and very good on his day. Good player. Don't get me wrong, I really like Ki. I think he's an excellent player. Not sure he's the type of player we need though. Not sure Allen is completely, but I think he'd be a better fit at the minute. If the club are looking at a like for like replacement for Afellay then Ki is more that than Allen though. It depends on what the club are after and it might be both types for all us 'grunts' know!?

Strongly suspect that this will be a family motivated thing as much as anything. If his Mrs wants to get back nearer her folks when bringing up a young family that is going to have a tremendously strong influence. I fear that yet again we are wasting inordinate amounts of time and effort tilting at the wrong targets. Sadly that'd have to be where you'd put your money , although everyone's different. And he may be perfectly settled in Cheshire and won over by the Hughes sell. If a top club were in, it'd probably be different. But doubt the lure of Stoke, even if we are a marginally better bet from a footballing point of view, will take priority over going home nearer to his and his wife's family and back to the club he was between 9-22. Either way, the money will be similar and he'll have kissed goodbye to the potential trophy-winning stage of his career Interesting to see what he'd do if Swansea don't match. Would he sit tight and hope £8m would be enough to get him in January, knowing he could definitely go there next summer on a Bosman on a huge contract?

It does seem to add up though doesn't it? The Joe Allen news breaks on Wednesday night, with various news outlets, and Percy mentions our "frustrated" pursuit of Ki, and even seems to have a direct quote from Coates confirming our bid for Allen. Swansea then either have to play ball with regards to Ki (to fund/make space for Allen) or we get a clear run at Joe Allen instead........ .....Until those cunts Southampton come in with a bid

The self styled best recruitment team in the business can surely? Short of putting a sheep's head in his bed, Tom Hagen and Paul McKenna combined can't make a player. He might sign, he might not. Not everything is down to bumbling incompetence. Surely being 'persuasive' is part of a recruitment teams remit?

Yeah you're probably right in fairness. I'm basing it more on what type of player I want us to sign rather than anything else.

Just had a premonition... We manage to get the Allen deal done and we put a sneaky £20m bid in for Williams, turns out there'd be more Welshmen here than Swansea ;-)

You can make a club sound like the Harlem Globetrotters, it doesn't matter a jot if the player's got his heart set on going home.

Apparently Swansea are set to match Stoke bid 13m. So it looks like we will lose out yet again. When will stoke learn to do deals more quickly? How things stand at the moment i cant see us signing anybody

Joe Allen is in the last year of his contract so liverpool will sell him before he walks away for nothing. Why can you grasp that You do realise a player has to agree to the move too? Allen knows Swansea are interested. They had an £8m bid rejected earlier in the summer. If he wants to move there, how exactly can we complete the deal 'quickly'?

If Sparky can get in a room with him then there's a slight, tiny bit of a chance. It's just whether Allen will give us the time of day to do that. I don't think he will.

Does anyone know where Joe lives?.Is he married with kids and if so does his wife come from Swansea?. All these factors will influence the players decision. If he is living near Liverpool and he/family are happy then we are favourites as they wont need to move.We are favourites to get Berahino because he lives in Penkridge and enjoys his social life there. Its not always about their best career move.

Just because you're from somewhere doesn't mean you want to live there.
You can always go back home to settle down later.

If he's got his heart set on going back though, I'm not sure this is one we can pin on Scholes' incompetence (unless we really, really want to and would anyway in any circumstances).

A Welsh wife, one child who hasn't started school. Stoke over Swansea not an easy sell for the family. In one very important aspect we're far more Welsh than them though. He may feel that the chairman is buying him for Swansea, and the manager at Stoke. Might be crucial. Opt for Stoke and he wouldn't have to move his wife, kid, goats, shetland ponies, dogs and chickens from the family home. (Yes, I've done a little research).

It's hardly a Crouchy style commute even if he does wanna live in Wales. I think it's more to do with playing for the club he supports.
