That's why I think he's flexible enough to do both Paul. He impressed as that kind of player under Klopp and as an energetic engine for Wales. He got Liverpool to part with the thick end of £15m as a deeper lying playmaker type. To me that says he has a diverse enough skillset to play either role. But hasn't he failed to nail down a starting position anywhere with Liverpool? And they're hardly blessed with outstanding CMs are they?

What are you on about? Contrary for the sake of it??!! I thought we were having a discussion???? Chill! What are we on about? We're on about the fact that Hackett said that he's not popular with Liverpool fans, a statement that you backed up. It's bollocks, I leave you to it. I said there's some truth in it. I'll leave you to your meltdown. Time of the month?

My take on it all is that Joe Allen will sign for Swansea. He's their first choice and he wants to go to them.

That's a 4-3-3 set up and Bojan wouldn't get a look in. Given his form last season Bojan could well be a regular on the bench. Yeah those 7 goals he scored last season we could do without.

People over the last 24 hours have been proclaiming he's the PERFECT replacement for Whelan, when in reality they haven't even seen Allen play that role. Are there that many pure, 100% holding midfielders around in the Premier League Paul?

I'm starting to come around to this kind of thinking myself. I'd love for us to sign someone who has made a career out of sitting in front of the back four, but there just doesn't seem to be enough of them (who are good enough) to go around anymore. A Joe Allen type seems like the next logical step. At the moment Pickles (and based on what I've seen and know of all four players) if I was picking a midfield three it would be Whelan, Allen and then one of Imbula OR Bojan. Obviously though you would think the plan is to have both Imbula and Bojan starting.

Despite his 7 goals he was miles below the level of the player we all fell in love with pre injury.

If that argument is going to be used then fine, let's take a flyer on what we think is the next best possible option but let us admit that's what it is and not claim he's the perfect Whelan replacement. 2. Are you suggesting there isn't a 100% holding midfielder anywhere in Europe, that player simply doesn't exist at all? 3. Maybe Hughes is considering playing Whelan and Allen together, with just one from Imbula and Bojan partnering them.

I'm a regular on the Liverpool forums as my lad is a Liverpool supporter. If you go back only to the end of last year most Liverpool supporters would have been happy to see the back of him. I hope he goes Swansea he won't fit in here at all.

Is that based on any info mate or just your gut instinct? Gut instinct mate Unfortunately I think you're right. The lure of 'going home' will be too great. I would have liked him to sign though. He's a tidy player with great energy and when I've seen him recently (that last game against Portugal aside) he's been very good.

Indeed Dave and if that were to happen, I think a midfield three of Whelan, Allen and Imbula would be a pretty impressive combination. We'd still need a replacement for Glenn at some point in the future though.

if tony scholes and co are right that £13 million is a fair price to pay for someone with a year left on his contract
then why don't they apply the same logic to selling players with a year left on their contact ?

Big season for Bojan - he's really got to prove he can do it on a regular basis in the premier league. The ability is there - it's about fitness and the desire to get stuck in that requires confirmation on the pitch. I really hope he comes good but the team can't afford to carry passengers. Ability wise Allen is not in Bojan's league but he could be one of the players that squeezes him out of the team - if he comes.

Maybe Hughes is considering playing Whelan and Allen together, with just one from Imbula and Bojan. 1. It really depends what we're looking for. Are we looking for a pure holding midfielder or is that role evolving in the Premier League and we're actually looking for a Kante type who does more than that? 2. I don't think I am suggesting that, no. I'm suggesting that the role is possibly revolving and we aren't seeing as many out and out holding midfielders in the league. Perhaps the decline of possession football and rise of the counter attacking game has demanded a bit of a change in the requirements of the role? 3. Are we saying that there's no chance at all Imbula can't develop a defensive aspect to his game? He's been here six months, he was clearly signed as the new Nzonzi, I'd be very surprised if we were giving up on that already?

Are you referring to N'Zonzi and Arnautovic here? Arnie's got a release clause inserted in his contract so no wiggle room there. If N'Zonzi was leaving us this summer he'd probably go for a fair bit more than he did last year, reflecting the increase in transfer fees across the board due to all the new TV money.

Well we don't know the answers to any of those questions, it's all speculation based on what Hughes may or may not do. I'm just saying that Joe Allen isn't a straight like for like replacement for Whelan - I think we can agree on that. The role that Whelan currently plays in the side may (as you say) change or the role may stay the same and it will be Allen who will have to get used to playing a new position. Or Allen will continue playing where he is accustomed to and he isn't seen as a replacement for Glenn at all.

Players are only worth what other clubs are willing to pay for them. If we'd undervalued nzonzi & he was as good as some fans seem to remember, we'd have had clubs hammering on our door to blow Seville out of the water. We didn't so the price was probably a fair one. As for Hacketts Liverpool claims, you could put Paul Scholes next to Jordan Henderson & he'd look shit. Henderson drags everyone around him down to his level.

Let it go for fuck's sake. The television money has inflated the market for one and given his recent exploits in the Euros Allen's stock is a lot higher than N'zonzi's ever was. Can't believe people are still banging on about it, it happened a year ago.

And that's tame compared to what Southampton fans said about Fuller as did this forum re Nzonzi 5 months before he left Have a look at some of the posts about Arnoutovic on here also and most supporters of other clubs don't rate Shawcross either so I really am struggling to see your point You see where this is going

And that was taken when he was on a bit of a run like I say if you go back to earlier in the season the Liverpool fans didn't want him anywhere near the team. Lucas is the player we need from there.
