I started going in 75, for me the present team is better, the squad much better, add a deadly striker and anything is possible.Made all the sweeter by what we had to endure for the 20 previous years.

It's no coincidence to me that since Afellay has come into the team the front 3 have started firing.
Afellay was the missing piece, he deserves just as much recognition as our 3 star attackers, he makes the game of football look almost efortless.

He 'knits' the play together effectively and what makes a huge difference us that he always looks to shift the ball forward and quickly. We look better with him in midfield than we did with Nzonzi in there. And that's saying something.

Monsier N'zonzi seemed much slower getting things going looking back. We have a really good side now, Affelay has become a lynch pin and looks really good with Glen

I always knew he was a good player, but again like I thought with Johnson, I thought his numerous injuries and his temperament would prevent him from being a success here, and I thought I was going to be proven right after his red card against West Brom, but since then his level of maturity and performances have been simply majestic. Signing of the season for me, an utterly sublime footballer who's only downside is that he's not 2 years younger. One of those players that can slow a game down to his pace, I can't come up with enough superlatives for him.

First match in 1960. Worshipped Sir Stan, Hudson, Greenhoff, Conroy, Smith etc al. This lot are BETTER! Go on Stoke!

Its getting to look very similar to 1973/75
the best Stoke City team I ever saw
what was amazing today - away from home after putting all the 'hard yards' in - they fell behind - and kept going
and deserved a bit of luck - Everton had their slice the other day

I was having this thought earlier today. Player for player, more of this team would make the first 11 than the 70s team ...and I have spent 40 years thinking of that team as the high point that we would be unlikely to ever again reach.

It's a a fantastic time to be a Stokie at the moment. We are on the brink of something really special. The next step is to consistently get results against teams that Park the bus. Over to you Sparky.

What can I say, Hudson...Greenhoff...Conroy, these are gods to me but it is a fact that this team are starting to turn into something special. We must remember that in the 75 to 76 period we finishes 5th on 2 occasions and if it wasn't for a super show by Tony Currie I am 100% certain we would have won the League. These boys are something special but so were the 70's lads. Enjoy the ride people we live in exciting times.

If our current squad go on to win a cup this year and get into Europe I will consider them to be on a par with what we had back in the day. My ten year old comes with me now and he's buzzing, he couldn't wait to contact his manure fan mates on Saturday after the game. To see him as proud of the team as I was and am today is bloody brilliant, fingers crossed Wembley he we come!!!!!

Fantastic time to be a Stokie and we deserve it because its been a long haul. But if you ever saw Alan Hudson boss the midfield on muddy pitches then you will know our lads need to keep improving

I watched you play some wonderful football BUT You are in grave danger of being the second best team we ever had. This lot really are that good We're getting closer match-by-match now. A cup-win will be the clincher. BTW: We ended up at 17th place of 22 teams in the league when we won the League Cup in '72. (35 points from 84)

(35 points from 84) 72 was pre-Hudson and we also played 70 odd games that season with several broken bones, our league form suffered because of our fantastic cup runs. Its just not right to compare the two eras but it will take alot more to surpass Hudson

How much longer can we keep our star players though when they are consistently putting great performances. Would hate to see the vultures come in and pinch our prize assets.

Surely the only genuine contenders within living memory are the boys of 72???
And even then did we play football with the verve and swagger we're currently seeing???
Admittedly this crop have to deliver league positions and trophies over a period of time to really challenge Waddo's crew.....but.....the football we're currently seeing must be close to the best ever displayed by a team in the red and white??!!

It's far more difficult now for a team of our relatively modest resources to compete than it was in the 70s, imo

I'm not saying we can win the league but I don't see why, with further investment, a fair wind and a packed Brittania at it's best, we shouldn't be top six or even top four contenders.

The team of the mid 70's, with Hudson in his prime, was surely better than the team of 72? Didn't win silverware but finished 5th in the League and were in with a good chance of winning it until the last 2 games. I think, given how much more cosmopolitan the league is with star players drawn from all over the world, that our current team IS probably the best we have ever had. Although we must have had a heluva side when we had 3 current England players including Matthews and Steele who has an England hat trick to his name. If the war had not intervened they would probably have gone on to be our best ever side in terms of league position.
