I think we are going to really struggle playing the 4 2 3 1 formation without him. His ability to run with the ball and be able to accept passes anywhere on the pitch and rarely give the ball away is going to be a real big miss for us.
I hope Hughes has a plan, I'm not sure Van Ginkel is the answer, he is certainly not like for like though Hughes obviously rates him. I have a suspicion that we may be going 5 - 3 - 2
Butland
Arnie lwb
Muniesa Wolf Shawcross
Johnson rwb
Whelan Cameron Bojan
Joselu Diouf
I actually think we desperately need a top top central midfielder and a couple of tip top wingers

I reckon there are two surprises to come yet.

I sound like a stuck record regarding replacing nzonzi but I'm hoping with a few more weeks of the window still open we get somebody in. We simply need to replace him

We've already replaced him with Van Ginkel.

We've already replaced him with Van Ginkel. Prior to the end of the season most of us were hoping for a 'Whelan upgrade' with the loss of Nzonzi still being more of a risk than a reality We are now going into a new season without the former and a loanee (Albeit a talented young one) replacing our player of the season We clearly need to strengthen this and the right side too otherwise I think we are going to get a fair few pastings against the so called big clubs, particularly away from home and with Ryan our only 'defensively strong' centre half then the situation is exacerbated even more. Do we go into the Chelsea games with only Whelan able to play as a defensive midfielder because Van Ginkel won't be allowed to play against his parent club ? We have a LOT of work to do still

Is Van Ginkel in anyway a physical presence? Because I think that's something that we haven't thought about particularly but will miss massively. Fonzy would win a load of headers in the middle, can MVG do that? And can he offer the same physicality?

There's been nothing to suggest we are going to be changing our formation that much, we would have seen more of it in the friendly games.
But as said above I think Van Ginkel is his replacement, like for like maybe not but I can't think of many that we could afford that would be like for like, not many have his control.

Didn't Van Ginkel play in the Bojan position yesterday with Sidwell and Whelan holding? The way the team is set out on the official site seems to say so,but I did not see the match.

We already have our replacement in Sidwell and Van Ginkel. I think we'll be seeing a lot of Sidwell at first with Van Ginkel gradually being phased in.

Why are people suddenly wanking off Steve Sidwell? We've lost two of our best players from last season and not replaced adequately but it's ok we've got Sidwell and Moha! Yeah, sorry for not buying into that.

Yeah, sorry for not buying into that. I agree,Sidwell is a decent player or seems to have been at Reading and Fulham, but he is certainly no N'Zonzi. We really need to find a replacement as at the moment van Ginkel appears to be a more of an attacking midfielder but perhaps one who is not going to put his foot on the ball and play the sort of game that N'Zonzi did.

Agree I am all for looking forward but if Sidwell is the was we'd then we are in trouble I simply don't understand how so many people seem happy to provide excuses for what has, so far, been an extremely poor transfer window overall for us

My view before the end of the season was Nzonzi was our most important player and had to keep him at all costs. Criminally underrated by other teams. The guy was a monster, the only thing he didn't have was goals but for me the guy is the best player I have seen down stoke in my 20 odd years.
Anyway he's gone now, personally think we'd have been better off keeping him for the season and letting him go for free with our best wishes. I think we had a chance golf top 6 and Europe if we'd kept him.
So back to where we are. We are very short in midfield. I thought Whelans legs had gone towards the end of last season, and we'd be looking for an upgrade. Now we seemingly need two new cms? Are we going to buy them? I don't think so based on renewing Whelan and Cameron's contracts.
I really don't think we can rely on Van Ginkel as starting cm. I could be wrong but he looks too lightweight for me.

I dont think we can afford a third season without real investment , we are weaker defensiveley and not added many goals so they need to pull a couple of first team signings off maybe Januzaj on loan may be an option , United have a big squad this season and Im not sure Van Gaal rates him as highly as Fergie and whoever replaces Nzonzi has to be as good as him with our defence , we cant take chances there so if the lad form Chelsea is not quite as good yet , they may need to think about that one . Sidwell is a much better player than we saw last season but he needs to show it if he wanta the place

I think this season we will all realise what an excellent player N'Zonzi is or was. Very difficult player to replace.
Is stock will rise in time.

He was worth more to us for a season than the 7 million we got. I have no idea how we go about replacing him. It is the equivalent of Liverpool losing Suarez, he was the heartbeat of our side. I'm really surprised we let him go
