The only thing that may save us from a 5 nil loss is the weather. The Aussie bowling attack will skittle us ten times over the series. Aside from cook and root I really don't see much resistance in our line up. Our bowlers are going to have to perform far better than they have been just for us to be competitive. I really don't see us winning a test

I've seen much worse England sides win test matches against much better Austrailian sides.
You live more in hope than expectation of winning the series, but I'd be mightily surprised & disappointed if we didn't win at least one test.

If you watch much cricket you'd agree. We have a mediocre bowling attack. We will struggle to take 20 wickets in a test match. That is not to say that we don't have the chance of a couple of batsmen making a stand a couple of times and giving us a Chance in the odd match. Form and odds suggest 5 0 ands that's the result I'd be betting on

Anderson is slowing up not as good as he was. Broad hmmmm, wouldn't get into Australias line up No spinner. The new lad is interesting. My guess is he will take the most wickets if our motley crew.

Personally I'm looking forward to Johnson ripping through our middle order, always funny to see England batsmen turning to check if that noise was the off stump getting ripped out.

Fucking hilarious. Great to see some new considered contributors to the cricket threads. That of course doesn't apply to you. Take your wind up pish elsewhere.

I'm amazed that there are England supporters that think that the series is already consigned to history as a diabolical loss to England. There are a number of journo's who are taking that point of view, but I would think that the average cricket follower knows that an Ashes series is only won after the last ball is bowled and the scoreboard is tallied.
Australia are favourites and take a lot of confidence into the first test. I would be astounded if the Ashes are not on the way back to Sydney (hypothetically speaking - but that's for another time eh Bish) The team is better balanced, not withstanding the Dad's Army label (thanks Dizzy) and the attack is in the best position than for many years. We have a complement of quicks that can take down the best of a batting lineup, and on their day will run through most sides with time to spare. However, I also think that with Cooke on the way back, if he isn't already, and Root showing form they can be a thorn in the side. As readers to this and other cricket threads on Oatcake will recognise that I have rated Broad in the past. Is he past his best, perhaps, but he can still be a nasty piece of work. I always had a sneaky appreciation of Anderson but after his recent outbursts I think perhaps he might be feeling father time beginning to weigh heavily. He should let his on field performance speak and leave the prophecies to McGrath (5 - nil again I note) I read that Mitch Johnson says he's re-found his mojo and the old time speed has returned - I hope so. But as we know he can be a tad inconsistent at times. On song he's devastating, a little off and he's a danger to the scoreboard operator. Hopefully the quicks can use the Duke to best advantage. This Ashes series will be the last for many of the current batch of Baggy Greens in England. They will be pulling out all stops to go home winners - something that none of them have done previously. It's 14 years or so since the Baggy Greens took an Ashes series in England. This could, and should, be the best chance in a long time.
We might even pull out the sprinkler dance as the English did at the SCG on winning the series. Now that is something I would cherish.
Just a thought. Since our illustrious PM has decided to resurrect the Australian Knighthood awards (what a Wally he's turning out to be) it could by Sir Pup, or Sir Hads when this New Year awards list is published, and Baylis sending Anderson to journo's school with a view to starting a new career as The Sentinel astrologer.

Some great fast bowlers have slowed up as they have got older ( it's a natural thing as the body deteriorates ) ....aka Trueman and Lillee perhaps McGrath ( although he was never quick ) ....they adapted and still were wonderful world class bowlers who continued to take wickets for several more years .....Broad by the way motley though he is has 287 Test wickets .

I'm not sure why there is all this fuss about the urn going to Australia ? You burned the bloody bail in the first place and presented it to England ...,,why do you want it back ? .....I'm not sure why I'm asking you this as you as English as I am really Syd

Bish, are you referring to his lack of a sense of humour or the deep seated laconic humour typical of we Australians.
Re: the Ashes - the urn was only on loan. (that's my version) The Ashes need to come home occasionally to feel the sun and let an adoring cricketing public bask in the glory. It's just petty of the English to want to keep a trophy in a cabinet having lost it.
By the way, on a recent trip to Lords I noted that the Sheffield Shield was also on show. Is this another trophy you are claiming as your own?

Not sure why you think its a wind up. You realise the last series was 5 -0 also presumably And the series prior to that here was 3-0 to England ......only Two short years ago ... And the last time we lost 5-0 we won the next home series. And the couple after that. So series history tells us not to worry unduly. Ashes fortunes have swung wildly in recent years - since 2005 in fact. Will they swing in England's direction this time. We'll find out. The Aussies look most likely mainly because of their quick bowling and their frequently devastating lower order batting. But England have talent. Will it be good enough - time will tell.
