Lyon has had at least 10 LBW shouts so far, none given. One was so plumb it ventured into "blind man" territory.
Aus need to be careful here, if Kohli and Vijay remain in at tea, it's going to be around 150 runs required from 30+ overs and to be honest, I'd expect the Indians to knock that off pretty comfortably.

The umpire is finger shy. I can't believe that he hasn't given at least one appeal. As you say, the first LBW was as plumb and plumb can be. He has missed that one and doesn't want to be seen to be making up for the mistake.

Just seen Australia won - despite a gallant (naive?) chase by India. Brilliant ton from Kohli, but should he have decided to go for a draw after 4 wickets went down noting how feeble his tail was in the first innings? Do India know how to bat out a draw on day 5?
But it's not all good news for our Aussie friends - Clarke pulled his hamstring and is out for the series, maybe for good? Let's hope not.

Kohli's pretty single minded, he stated no matter what it was they would have tried to chase it. It may have been naive and it certainly lost them the test, but that's how cricket should be played in my opinion, they came up short but if they'd done it we'd be talking about one of the greatest test wins of all time. With his 141 and Vijay's 99 they weren't far off either.

India were right to go for the win early on, but after losing Rahane to go four down or certainly Sharma for the 5th wicket, they should have retrenched and decided to play out the draw. Their last 5 wickets folded tamely in the first innings, there was no way that same tail was going to sustain a 4th innings run chase. Maybe reckless is a better word. Kholi, despite his heroics with the bat, as captain effectively handed the match to Australia. If you can't win, at least avoid defeat. A mantra Kohli doesn't sign up to it would seem.

I think logically it makes absolute sense, but when 4 down they were 120 off and 5 down only about 80 off with 20 overs left, with Kohli and Saha (who is no mug with a bat) at the crease. I think if you sit there prodding around on a pitch spinning like that you're just as likely to get out coming down the track trying to hit a 4, as was shown early in the day by Pujara getting out defending and Vijay possibly being out about 10 times for padding up. I think in an age where money is ruling and sadly the interest in test cricket is on the decline, I think it's good for the game India had a go today.

Jason Hughes (Phillip's brother) scored 63, caught on the boundary, playing for Grade side Mosman yesterday. Unfortunately he was on the losing side.
Kohl says he was invoking the spirit of the great Frank Worrell in the first test and was 'happy to go down blazing for victory' He almost made it too. With an hour and a bit to go an Indian victory looked more the case than a loss. Vijay must have been devastated to go on 99. However, he would have gone 4 hours (lbw to Lyons) earlier if DRS had have been in place. On saying that, even without DRS the lbw appeal should have been given. On the other hand the dismissal of Rahane caught at short leg off Lyon was a joke. DRS would have shown he was no where near the ball. Swings and roundabouts - maybe. but the Indian's possibly paid the price for not having technology in place this time around.
The skippers announcement yesterday that he will miss the rest of the series, and his future in cricket is in doubt is a blow to our chances to win the Ashes next year. I can see the core of the side having to be rejigged very soon. The composition of the bowling attack will have to be under scrutiny with Siddle and Harris under the pump.
Smith's elevation to Captain might have to be pushed along (with Davie Warner as VC? Mmm, that would be tasty) Might be pushing it just a tad. Haddin skippering the team during the Ashes with Smith as his VC is more likely,
On to the 'Gabba, hopefully with less raw emotion showing.

India reach their first 50+ opening partnership away from home since 2011.
Johnson takes the headlines, but Harris is a far better bowler in my opinion, his absence is being sorely felt up to this point.

Just as I say that, there's the wicket, soft, very soft Dhawan. Just caught up with the close of play score; 311/4. Day 1 to India. Anyone remember England's first innings effort last time out at the Gabba? Let's just say it was less in total than Indian's opening bat scored.

Well congrats to Australia for winning the second test. Day one to India but that was about it. You could argue that the difference between the teams was the lower order batting in the first innings. India lost their 5th wicket on 321 then folded to close on just over 400; Australia lost their 5th at 232 but ended up with a score of 500+.
Australia's lower order seem to bail out their top order an awful lot. That ain't a fluke; their tail knows how to bat.

Third test reaching boiling point; how will India approach day 5? Try and bat it out or chase 300+ on the final day.
Australia know they just need 5 wickets because the final 5 are folding without much resistance.

Well Australia messed that up big time.
Made an "English" declaration! Meaning they batted far too long in the morning; more concerned with ensuring a defeat was impossible rather than winning the game. Not at all the famed Aussie mentality.
Poor show.

Yes, just what were they up to at the end of the Australian innings? Fair dos trying to give Marsh the chance of his century (and he motored at the end with those 6's), but when he was run out on 99, why did Hazelwood come into bat for 10 minutes? Muddled thinking that felt like England at the end. They also didn't really hustle enough at the start of the day. Very unusual for the Australians to go defensive. Dhoni has now retired from test cricket. It really looked as though he'd retired (in mind) a while a go. They'll miss his counter-attacking batting but little else. They have better keepers and Kohli looks to be a far more alert and attacking skipper.

I imagine knowing you are supposedly one of the names on the Mugdal report naming alleged match fixers might be a bit distracting. I believe the report is being hushed up until after the 2015 World Cup.

Well, we're fast approaching the end of this thread; day 1 of the final test completed and Australia are 348-2.
What do we all reckon Australia will post for a first innings score - I reckon North of 650.

Davie Warner posted an emotional 12th Century. Pity Roger didn't quite get there although I suspect his performance has booked him a ticket to the UK. Hopefully Smith will snare his ton today and Watson can navigate out of the awful run of poor form.
Have to say that I was most disappointed in Kohl's captaincy yesterday. After Adelaide I had expected much more.
The wicket is as flat as flat can be, so a five day Test possibly whimpering out to a tame draw wouldn't be unexpected. Unless it starts to break up today. There were a couple of puffs of dust off the wicket yesterday, so who can tell. (as SCG wickets in the past have done)
I think that not having two spinners in the side might have been a mistake. Not to worry though, I've charged my backback and preparing to make my way to the SCG until the end.

I have to say that the Aussie are looking like a very decent side.
Smith is an excellent young batsman. Rodgers a grafter who an innings can be built around, an Warner a cracking attacking batsmen. Add in Clarke and that's a pretty good line-up (+ Watson, Haddin and Johnson).
The bowling - especially the depth of pace bowlers is also excellent to. Very envious from an English perspective.

The bowling really worries me - lots of good options. Our cupboard looks quite bare when you take out Anderson and Broad. Be interesting to see how the batting fares in England. Smith has had an amazing series, but I think he has flaws against the moving ball that doesn't get exposed in Australia, particularly not against this Indian pace attack. Let's hope for a great series. If we are going to win - we are going to need Cook playing very well. He is very important to us.

Have to agree with ukstokie. Smith is having an amazing run of good form. His century was marked with a maturity that befits an Australian captain.
The Indians were showing signs of digging in at the end of the play yesterday. Starc bowled fast and accurately. This is a bowler who has been dropped 11 times in the past and has something to prove to the selectors. After his two spells in the last session it would seem that he's doing just that, Today the Indian batsmen need to dig in and build a score that underpins their huge talent. They haven't shown it yet in the series, so now has to be the time before the World Cup. Kohli has a point to prove to his selectors too. They need to see that he is the right choice of captain. Who would have guessed at the beginning of this series that both captains, as shown on the front cover of the programme, are no longer leading there respective teams. The only disappointment yesterday was that Watson didn't go on the complete his century. He's still scratching around for form - perhaps he will perform well with the ball today. A point of history. I understand that this is the first match in which all six of the Australian top order batsmen scored 50 and over. I've just packed my backpack and will make my way to the SCG. Today is Jane McGrath Day. The Ladies Stand will be renamed in her honour for the day and the SCG will be decked out in pink. The players will donate their 'Baggy Pink' caps to the McGrath Foundation. The signed caps will then be auctioned along with the players shirts. Terrific place to be today and a fantastic cause (beats cancer community nursing) will be financed for another year. Looking forward to a fine day of test cricket.
