I liked their music back in the 90's, but he comes across as a right cock preaching his feed the world mantra and at the same time pocketing tens of millions of pounds off Apple.

Seems to me its considered cool to hate them these days, therefore they could actually be the most underrated band on the planet, given that their back catalogue is up there with the very best.
bono may be sanctimonious, but that doesnt make their music shit. Their music will still be played and covered in decades from now,it'll stand the test of time better than most of the inane stuff being peddled at the moment.

At the time 'Boy' and 'October' were great albums. A bit of post punk/indie guitar rock that had a good sound, a bit like the Alarm, rubbing shoulders with The Cure, Joy Division, Teardrop Explodes, even Gang of Four Comsat angels and stuff. I loaned the first two lps on vinyl from the basement of Boots in Hanley, U2 played the Victoria Hall at the time {1979/80?}. I didn't go, but mates said it was great, Bono on the balcony waving a flag etc. 'Boy' and 'October' were good. I lost interest in them pretty quickly though, they became a bit too pompous and anthemic for me around 'New Years Day'. I havn't listened to those albums for about 20 years {I might now.} 'Achtung Baby' has some fine tunes on it. I wouldn't want to go and see them playing live. Have they handcuffed themselves to peoples tablets or something? Cheeky beggars.
On a side not I went to see Peter Hook and The Light at The Ritz, Manchester {about 100 yards from The former Hacienda} last week. Brillant. They were on stage for nearly 3 hours, and it flew. They did a Joy Division set { Atmosphere, She's Lost Control, Isolation Etc.} 'Lowlife' and 'Brotherhood' in their entirity, then 12"s Thieves Like Us, Lonesome Tonight, Confusion with a fantastic encore of Temptation. The gig was stopped by Hooky while he threatened a would be stage invader and had him chucked out. He's mellowed somewhat. A mate is truly hooked, went to Shepherd's Bush on saturday and is thinking of Berlin this weekend.

That Edge is a V tedious guitarist... i liked them up until Achtung Baby and then their pretentiousness levels disappeared into the stratosphere! re: The Edge, completely agree! always remember listening to "Silver and Gold" when Bono says "Ok Edge play the blues" which would have been far more accurate if he'd said "Ok Edge play exactly what you play as a solo on virtually every song we ever do"

It sounds like it was written and recorded in a rush (it was) and the stuff they've done in the last decade is much better. It's cool to hate U2, but I've always been a big fan. I don't care how much of a cock Bono is, how silly The Edge's hat is, or what they do with their tax returns, I just like the music and don't bother complicating matters beyond that.

Everything they've done since has been Ok to good, but there aren't many bands who produce their best work 30 years into a career.

Again.... Doesn't Rowetta appear now & again with Peter Hook & The Light? yep, went on tour with them and did vocals with his band "Freebass" as well. not done too bad for herself for someone who's main claim to fame years back was giving Shaun Ryder a blowie on stage (allegedly) when she was with the Mondays

It's always a good " Where do you stand on U2" debate. Personally on the sunglass wearing tax dodgers head. But, they have made some awesome stuff over the years, just a real shame they are such knobs, imagine if they had the attitude, or the balanced approach of someone like Dire Straits, Madness, or even Bros...LOL.... You never hear people saying " I wish that Mark Knopfler would shut the fuck up", or " Aint that Suggs cunt a pretentious tax dodger"

Boy was a decent album, shame Big Country blew them off stage on that tour mind. Oakenfold gave them cred, but since then their very best has slightly-decent-mortgage-rock-by-numbers.

Their stuff right up to Joshua Tree was top notch. Then they re-invented themselves and started to knock out complete bilge, trying to be something more 'hip' and failing (imo).
Their post-Joshua Tree stuff hasn't had a single airing in my house, Vertigo etc, total cack.

The Edge - a feckin pizza in a bob hat - a One trick pony that Bill Baley accurately satirises......never ever got the U2 euphoria...bunch of hypocrites...and bland bland music .....and Bonio - friend of presidents and leaders of men in his daft specs........and the pseudo religious experience thing at live aid - hilarious.....
Each to their own I guess.......
