I can only think that he wasn't sent off because the villa lad had knocked it too hard in front of himself that he had no way if getting to the ball.

Yellow was the right decision in my opinion.
Just watching the game again on Sky extended and for me confirms what I thought at the time. Villa were very dirty in a sly sort of way. There were two incidents of arms in the face on Pieters and Cameron. Crouch was brutalised at times. The commentary is disgraceful seems to me to want to push a "dirty Stoke " agenda. The final count of 5 yellows for Villa and one for Stoke perhaps tells a different story.

This. it was an excellent and 100% correct decision by the ref. The ball went directly to Bego so no goal scoring chance was denied because there wasn't one; something the brain dead commentator on MOTD failed to spot. |

The player saw his touch was a poor one and he would never catch it so took a dive when he saw wilson sliding in.

Wasn't the ref Craig Pawson? He's only been the ref of 6-7 Premier League games, which may explain why he bottled a few questionable sendings off yesterday.
As ever, the people (especially Kammy) on Goals on Sunday have done some proper analysis on all the moments, and got it all spot on.

He jumped over the tackle Wilson didn't touch him, it was his own fear of being tackled (tackles are part of football ) that led to him going down, you can't claim to been fouled by someone who only had an intention to do it.

It went straight to Bego so I think that saved him. And the ref imo should have probably sent Albrighton off, in real time (I haven't seen it back) it looked a horrible tackle that he did, so I think he bottled it because it was the easy decision.
Definite dive though.

I look at a challenge like that and, whatever the rules are, I don't think it should be a sending off. Yes, it is late and yes he is the last man. But it was an honest challenge for the ball, he tried to get to what looked like a 50/50 ball and didn't make it. That's football, IMO. It wasn't a 'professional' foul to stop a player who was in clear possession of the ball.
The commentary I got here on the NBC broadcast (not sure if it was the same as what English-based viewers was nauseating. Some thick fuck going on and on about the controversial non-red card blah blah blah for the entire rest of the match. I'm not sure if the guy was trying to stir the pot or push an agenda but it was really annoying. If he wanted to say Wilson was lucky to stay on, fair enough. But to bleat on about it for the rest of the match was nonsense. It's a marginal decision for the referee so it had to go one way or the other.

someone 10 times faster than usain bolt wouldn't have a had a clear goalscoring opportunity, let alone the villa player. bego too one step and caught it before the villa player had hit the ground almost. NEVER a red.

I have to say I think Craig Pawson handled the game remarkably well. The Wilson challenge wasn't a red, although at the time I thought it was clear. The Delph challenge by modern standards was a definite red, but 20 years ago would be considered a booking only really. Same for the Albrighton tackle. I'm not going to lie, I miss that kind of football. There's very few things I miss in football more than the proper rough tackling of the 90s. It kept the game an event and both teams ended with 11 players, and the best team won. I'm alright with that |

I don't get this whole 'he went down because he avoided the challenge' that was discussed on Goals on Sunday yesterday. Avoiding challenges has been around for as long as tackling has so if he has a fear of being tackled then football isn't for him. He jumped the challenge, realised that he'd booted it way too far and through to Bego then let himself fall over. You can see on the replays that he'd got his right foot on the ground but then let his left leg 'trial' behind thus allowing him to fall over. The Villa player made absolutely no effort to stay on his feet and certainly doesnt have any right to go down. It was a dive and should have been booked for it. |

He's a talented player but his discipline is appalling and refs do themselves and the game no favours if they let him get away with as much as he does.  Whilst I am on the subject of the officials, can I add my thoughts on Sean Massey. She always seems to officiate at the Boothen end of the ground and I don't think I've ever seen her have a poor game at the Brit. I like the way she puts her flag up for throw ins without looking for advice from the ref first. I wish more of her colleagues would call it as they see it and not try to please the ref. And she rarely fails to flag for fouls which happen in her part of the pitch. She's also sound on offside decisions - not perfect - but as good as you are going to get in decisions made in real time without the benefit of slow mo replays. How ironic that those morons Keys and Gray should choose one of the better assistant referees about whom to make their misogynistic "offside" comments. |
