Nice piece Captain, how was your result yesterday received by the natives? Fairly well really. We battered them. Still no idea how we lost but signs really encouraging.

We're lacking firepower and pace and until we sort that out it's going to be difficult. Too many of our attacking players are past it or not up to the job,if we had the Etherington and Pennant of 2011 I'd be a lot more optimistic....or Fuller ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif)

They were bang on the money with this...
"You sense they need to add some craft and pace coming in from the flanks and some mobility in central midfield to prevent the striker from becoming too isolated whilst also injecting a little tempo into their attacking game."
If we're going to play someone up front as we did with Crouch yesterday we need some flair and a player who can turn a defender to race onto any defence-splitting passes we passes we're able to make. We also need at least one midfielder who can get forward and try to unlock opposing defences. Whelan didn;t do that but Adam did.
On the evidence of yesterday we were still a little too pedestrian in our forward play and that took away from many of the other encouraging aspects of the performance.

If we can get a striker and two inside forwards we're laughing. We just need pace and we'll cause an hell of a lot of teams problems. But this year is all about transition so we've gotta be patient.

Interesting stuff but I think our defence being breached so ruthlessly, so often, needs addressing just as urgently as improving our attacking threat.

Hoilett and Sinclair would do for me. Whether we can get them is another matter.

Interesting stuff but I think our defence being breached so ruthlessly, so often, needs addressing just as urgently as improving our attacking threat. To be fair I think this may resolve itself in the long run. Any defence can have a wobbly day and even in recent years we've taken some bad beatings and relied on some last gasp heroics from defenders and keeper to keep the score down. Given the opposition I wouldn't think that yesterday was any more calamitous than, say, Southampton at home last season. I think the defence can get its act together once they're comfortable with their new roles, or with some slight tweaking from the management (though I do think we might be light on centre-half options, should Huth or Shawcross become unavailable) Goals and creativity though are clearly not going to address themselves - drastic action is required and new faces are needed. Even though we had more chances yesterday than we usually do in away games we still looked like, to me at least, a team who've been bottom of almost all of the creativity and goalscoring stats in the country for the past two years.

captainfishpaste, were you one of the posters of readytogo who thought Mignolet was better than Begovic? Cracked me up that did. I think yesterday proved Mignolet doesn't even come close to Begovic. And as the commentator said: "Have liverpool bought the wrong keeper?". A resounding yes.
Begovic has to be worth £25-£30 million.

Fair points smudge but I think the new system itself will clearly lead to increased pressure on the back. Sure 'the cage' got breached far more often than was comfortable last season but time after time yesterday there was no pressure from the midfield as an admittedly decent Liverpool side scythed through it at will. Huth got some stick for the goal yesterday but the freedom afforded them in the build up was worrying in the extreme, not one even attempted tackle in several phases of play. This may be the 'price' we have to pay for a more attacking outlook and although Bego and Ryan apart it wasn't our greatest display defensively, I think the problems stemmed from midfield. We all want Adam in the side but I think that makes that midfield even more exposed. I liked what I saw yesterday and perhaps focusing on our creativity is the way to go and Hughes must play the system he wants to but I see us conceding a lot of goals as we stand.

Interesting stuff but I think our defence being breached so ruthlessly, so often, needs addressing just as urgently as improving our attacking threat. Yesterday was always going to be a huge test for our defence in that it was the first time they've been asked to play a passing game against Premier League standard opposition, and Anfield was never going to be the easiest place to try it out. I was worried the defence might get repeatedly caught out in possession but to be fair I thought they made a good fist of taking that extra responsibility.

I was very vocal through Pre-Season at how clumsy our lot were with the ball at their feet. I have to be fair and hold my hand up on that one. I was pleasantly surprised with that yesterday, particularly Ryan.

That's good work, Captain ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif) You are right about the front 3. It's 4-3-3 when we are in possession in the final third, but 4-5-1 when we aren't. The issue being the transition. As Smudge put, that can be solved by a better attacking midfielder and the use of a more mobile striker (we should have started Kenny). But all that is away from home against the car thieves. At home, (especially against Palace etc) I will be surprised if we are 4-5-1 and that the same personnel start. Saw the highlights of your lot. The Mad Italian might actually know what he's doing .... be a surprise that, Captain

Besides, Mignolet still saved a penalty, kept a clean sheet, and produced a top class save from Walters when it was needed. He's a corking goalie. The fact Begovic is also a corking goalie shouldn't detract from that.
