Just casting my eye around the Premier League web site and looking at their table of summer transfers to date. 3 of the teams we might expect to consider our competitors next term seem to have gone on a signings-fest ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/vEIFeJPtIIq1awrUd6zP.gif) I don't know if our more conservative approach is deliberate or forced upon on us since some deals just haven't dropped but either way I hope/expect that the level of change these clubs have implemented will hold them up rather than help them short term at least ![8-|](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/rY_vRFLA3mqqdMbEG4cF.gif) Also interesting to see the markets in which they are operating. Not too much money being spent on the transfers themselves (Bony at Swansea is one exception) but free seems to be the trend. I guess wages is the main element of most deals these days. Here are the scores on the doors: Swansea City: 9 players in Jose Canas (Real Betis) Free Jordi Amat (Espanyol) £2.5m Jonathan De Guzman (Villarreal) Loan Gregor Zabret (NK Domzale) Undisclosed Alex Gogic (Olympiakos) Undisclosed Alejandro Pozuelo (Real Betis) Undisclosed Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool) Undisclosed Wilfred Bony (Vitesse Arnhem) £12m Jernade Meade (Arsenal) Free Sunderland: 8 players in Cabral (Basle) Free Modibo Diakite (Lazio) Free Valentin Roberge (Maritimo) Free David Moberg Karlsson (IFK Goteborg) Undisclosed Vito Mannone (Arsenal) Undisclosed Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar) Undisclosed El Hadji Ba (Le Havre) Free Emanuele Giaccherini (Juventus) Undisclosed Norwich City 6 players in Ricky Van Wolfswinkel (Sporting Lisbon) Undisclosed Javier Garrido (Lazio) Undisclosed Nathan Redmond (Birmingham City) Undisclosed Carlo Nash (Stoke City) Free Martin Olsson (Blackburn Rovers)Undisclosed Leroy Fer (FC Twente) Undisclosed

It's not about quantity it's the quality of the signings that count.

Carlo Nash (free) has got to be the signing of the summer......

Sunderland always sign a truckload of players early on, and they always end up decidedly average. The team as a whole that is not necessarily the individual signings, mind you they signed Carlos Cuellar last summer and........least said soonest mended.

Didn't we sign loads of players before last season, most of whom were to make up the numbers in our U21s? As sorensen82 said, it's not about "how many" - it's "how good" that matters

You can sign 100. If they'll not of the required quality you'll still be in the shit.

Still can't get over Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. Great signing for them.
Carlo Nash. Is he our first ever player to be sold to another Premier league team? or was he out of contract by then?

Is there never enough of this shit? Who cares what other teams are signing? Every window teams sign a load of players. Every window some of them are good, some of them are useless. If you sign loads of players early, they're the ones that there's not much rush for, apart from the odd gem. Every window it's the same, it's fucking boring and irrelevant.

Ok there will be some crap in those signings. But its hard to argue that there also is some pretty impressive captures particularly by Norwich. There are quite a number in that list that many on here would have been chuffed to buggery to have signed for SCFC. As it stands our activity has been pretty unspectacular, a left back who would have signed in Jan,Jermaine freakin Pennant and a Barca reserve. None of these signings will address our poor quality out wide and up front. But there is a month to go and you never know Les might like to continue the Stoke tradition of last day signings.

I think in real terms we could consider Butland and Shea as new signings, plus were linked with a couple more so we could easilly be matching the business of those above us...agree that Norwich have signed well though, would have loved to have seen Fer,Wolfswinkel and Redmond at The Brit

Dont know much about many of swansea's signings, but given how Michu turned out last season I would bank on there being a couple of Laudrup gems in there. Norwich look to have done the best business on paper to me and I would be happy with most of them at stoke. As usual, Sunderland look to have spent a lot of money and will probably end up bang average. I'd be concerned if i was a Sunderland fan with pdc at the helm. As for stoke, business done so far is good and I'm sure there will be more arrivals.

The only ones I'd like us to have been in for out of that entire list are Van Wolfswinkel and Redmond, and neither of which would necessarily start.

First it's a good idea in life not to get too insular and take a look around an see what is happening elsewhere. You can learn from it, good or bad. What other teams are doing may be 'fucking boring' to you but it's certainly not 'irrelevant' to our situation unless you don't care how we do next season. Second, if you weren't in such a hurry to get yourself all wound up you would have read my original post where I did say that I thought such a level of change may be too much.

Swansea and sunderland have signed too many. Teams that sign that many tend to struggle with gelling as a squad. Sunderland have fallen for that trap before, quite why they haven't learnt from it, God only knows.
3 or 4 new players who will compete for the first 11 should be the max. We've got 2 in areas we were really short in. Hopefully now we'll be sensible and sign one or two good players.
I'm hoping for a pacey striker and a pacey winger. I think we've got more than enough in Centre mid with Nzonzi, Adam, Whelan, Wilson, Palacios and Cueviellier (sp). Our goalkeeper selection has got to be up there with the best in the league. Despite what people think I reckon Shotten will flourish at right back under a new manager and he doesn't I'm sure one of Wilko, Cameron or Wilson will do an adequate job for a season at least.

That's a hell of a lot of changes for those clubs. Best signing out of that lot is Fer for me - he'll be a good player next season. I would have liked Stoke to have been in the mix for Swansea City: Wilfred Bony (Vitesse Arnhem) £12m (not at that price though) Sunderland: Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar) Undisclosed Norwich City Nathan Redmond (Birmingham City) Undisclosed Leroy Fer (FC Twente) Undisclosed Wolfswinkel is supposedly very good but even if he isn't he HAS to start with a great name like that ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif)

In Hughes we have a manager who made tons of signings that i am sure appeared good at the time with QPR, only for almost all od them to flop. I am hoping he has learnt from this approach, and that he goes for quality at the right price, rather than quantity.
I wouldn't worry what others do. He has addressed areas in need, and i am sure he will bring in at least 1 winger/striker in the next month.

I can see Swansea getting top 8 and Norwich getting top 10 - IMO Norwich will be a right force if the signings play to their ability however I don't rate any of Sunderlands signings especially Altidore I think they will struggle again

Whilst Bony hasn't even been allowed to step foot in the UK yet as he hasn't been given a visa.

Swansea - De Guzman, Shelvey, Bony
Norwich - Redmond, Fer, Van Wolswinkel
Sunderland - Giaccherini, Altidore
The above players on current standings would all walk into our team. Cover it up any way you like but they would.

Happy with our signings so far. Looks like we are close to Oliviera, and Diouf may still be on the cards. We have said we are looking to brink in a striker so you can almost guarantee we will get someone. I'd like to see another winger as well.
As for the 3 clubs mentioned, I think each have made at least 4 quality additions to their squad.
Villa and Southampton also looking strong. I think only Sunderland will finish below us out of that lot!
