Maybe my first post in this thread in over 2 years! I had further complications from the dog injuries but started running regularly again in December. Getting back to my previous speed/fitness felt like the hardest thing I've done in my life, having agoraphobia also, which got worse I think due to the stop/start issues in walking/running following the dog injuries. I'd go out the front door, and the street would be a bright blur, even on an overcast day. Whereas in the 'safety' of the fenced back garden, I felt alright. It took 4 months to return to PB pace, and I broke my 5k PB on April Fools Day (20:43)! I broke it 2 more times in a week, knocking 25 seconds off it. I was still hating running though. Even when running slower. I entered and ran the Mow Cop Killer Mile (kind of a bucket list item before I ever thought I'd take up running), and it felt like climbing Everest and my Olympics all in one. I felt brilliant at the top, and it's weird but amazing how my agoraphobia went pretty much immediately after. I hadn't slept for days I was so anxious. I wondered if I could run it under 10 minutes, and I finished in 9:50, despite being so nervous I blasted off way too fast. One 5k PB, I took another 29 seconds off my best (down to 19:29). It made me think of Michael Johnson when he smashed his 200m World Record in the 90s, around the same numbers but in seconds. I'm down to 19:14 now and feel I should have already ran 5k under 19 minutes. Hopefully 18:30, which seems a crazy target in my 40s after only taking up running relatively recently. I've joined a running club as well (thanks for the advice, felonious ), and it was kind of my last resort in trying to enjoy running again, and I'm enjoying the social side of that and have started to enjoy running again over the past 2-3 months. Sometimes I want to give up and wonder why I do it. The physiotherapy and running up Mow Cop about once a month seems to have helped strengthen my knees, although they're still very painful and uncomfortable at times, and slightly give way unexpectedly, though the pain in my ankles seems worse more often now. I did have an MRI scan a year apart, and the surgeon seemed to say my knees hadn't got worse in that time, and I had been running. I've also ran a couple of 10ks - first time I went off for a fast first 5k (20mins) then hoped to hang on for 45mins. I ran 41:26! It blew my mind. My next 10k was 40:52. I don't train for that distance, but hopefully I can get under 40mins. Good luck in Conwy, northy! I heard a couple of folk talking about it today (I did the NSCCL at Parkhall).

I've had an update from one of my training partners who told me that Northy took him out towards the end of the race

Thanks, all went well despite what the weather could throw at us, horrible wind and rain going up the Orme, hail and rain like someone was sticking needles in you, hard to run against a full head on 40MPH wind at times, and wind hitting your head one way, bouncing off the rocks at the side and taking your feet the other way, almost knocking you over, it wasn't a run for a time/PB, more of a character building run. Good to hear you are back into it and some great times.

Tatton Yule Yomp 10k yesterday, it's normal great fun, mud, above ankle deep water in one place, I only slipped over on my arse once, the elf suit got a bit muddy, Christmas fancy dress on most of the runners, some particular splendid outfits, the 4 ladies I chatted to at the start dressed in all white as angels would have looked different at the end. Far more ladies than men running it.

I've been holidaying in Greece. The bus times were crap (5:30am or 11am), so I ran (mostly trail and with my daily travel stuff including cameras) from Delphi to Arachova early one morning. I massively underestimated how difficult it'd be. My longest ever run at 12km and most elevation at 600m, but I felt good after.
On Sunday for another early morning, I ran at the Panathenaic Stadium (the original modern Olympic Stadium from 1896), and Strava clocked me in at a massive 30 seconds off my 5k PB! 18:44. I bought a tourist t-shirt for the first time and felt elated all day! So that's just over 2 minutes taken off my 5k PB this year, and my target of 18:30 seems achievable.
Oh, and the only other folk in the stadium that morning also turned out to be from Staffordshire!

Sometimes when I run, I miss the Netherlands. Mostly because it was so flat. I was doing a 10k in about 37 mins, which at 6 foot 2 felt pretty good. Fast forward 5 years and I struggle to hit 5 miles under 38 mins 😂. I blame the dogs.

Not posted in a while on this thread as just been plodding away. As part of the marathon training in May I started doing half marathons in January and then set the target of running 52 HMs in 2023. Not quite one a week but still 52 in 52 weeks. (I had to run 3 this week to get them in) Anyway, finished it today so pretty chuffed.
Could be something you try as a challenge/target for yourselves in 2024?

Any New Years Resolutions?
Hopefully crack that official sub 3 marathon here, had a year off marathon running and managed to PB at all other distances so time to have another go.

Wilmslow half marathon is my first target. Long covid sent me back to square one with my running, I tried to do the Wilmslow half last year and tore my calf half way round. But hopefully this year I can step it up.......

I thought I saw you on the track last night just as I was finishing my stretching. I had a decent early session on the track last night after 3 or 4 months to forget.... my watch was telling me my fitness age is back down to 20 It was bloody cold up there on that hill last night.

I'm attempting a half marathon every week this year for charity.
Had a really indulgent December so I'm trotting around in over 2 hours at the minute. My PB is 1:52 in the Potters and my hope is to be comfortably under 1:50 every week by the time summer comes round.
10 miles tonight and then back out for my second of the year on Saturday morning.

I turned down our London club place, only 1 other guy wanted it so let him have it. I then went to enter Manchester and it was sold out, but I managed to get a transfer off someone last week.
Had to get on track quickly so got 15 miles in yesterday morning.

Just done my 5th half marathon in 5 weeks. I’m coming in around 1:58:00 at the moment, so pleased with that. Made all the better this morning by some Milf cycling past me in Battersea Park and shouting ‘wahey Stoke City!’ at my top
