I keep running 5k at pretty much the same pace Is there a point where you’ll never get any faster? When I started running (again) I was told by a club member that there were roughly 10 years worth of improvement ahead subject to major illness or injury and he was pretty much correct. To do this you need to run fast/slow, short/long, hilly/flat, road/off road basically mix it up and get the heart rate operating at varying bpm so that when needed you've got that extra capacity. For a 5K you also need stamina and endurance as well as speed. You'll get that by mixing it up. As Cactus says the interval training of all sorts is key. Some of it sounds counter intuitive but it works. Get your sad ass down to a club Any clubs running around Milton at 6am? 🙄😂

Hate to disappoint you but my Garmin was 4 seconds different to the chip time on Sunday's race. Remember Salop's times in the MD10Ks and don't forget he was carrying a different type of 6 pack back in those days. The bastard's superfit now

I was talking to a running coach a month or so back and he reckoned very early morning wasn't a great time for getting the best out of yourself. Can you not do the normal club slots of around 6:30PM on a Tuesday and a Thursday?

If you run at the same pace everywhere you'll only ever run the one pace, 10x400mtrs with 90 sec recovery are a staple way of improving speed and then reducing recovery after a while, doing a fartlek another good way, if you struggle on your own there are many clubs out there with beginners groups to help people Ayup shag, where've ya been? Bloody injured as always 😂 got back to it now, tried the maffetone method to get a good base in and now back training with the club, just trying not to do too much too soon, even though have entered Meerbrook 15k virtual 🙈 doubt I'll be touching the hour mark for it again this time.

Thinking of doing the actual route as I do sadistically love it Ran up it on Tuesday albeit the Summer Series route from Leek Golf Club, the hill that keeps on giving. We haven't decided on a route yet but the original is still in the mix with it's 1200 feet? of elevation

It certainly is. A well known fact. I’m thinking about starting running although I find it extremely tedious. I’m considerably overweight (about 3 stone over what I should be) can anyone recommend a sort of plan where I can start gently (maybe a mile or so to start with) and also a way of making a run more enjoyable?

Saying that it’s a very up and down route by me. I’d just like a flat route to start with. Suppose I can find one, it was just the most natural route at the time. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and do it again

Yes that looks more like it. Used to be exercise mad about 20 years ago and run 5 mile every night. Now I can’t even step out of the front door without feeling dread! I’m going to give that a go but I won’t post anything until I’m at the end of the cycle and ready for the next stage. Nice one👍🏻

Not really mate. Very hectic work days. You need to get a new job mate, running's far too important to miss out Agree entirely with this. The showers at my office have been out of use since the start of the end-times which has put a stop to my lunch hour run. Unless they reopen as soon as possible I'm out the door.

You could try a change in the back of the car and the copious amounts of underarm and excessive aftershave approach

There's something about it that catches you out even when you've done it loads of times. It gradually kicks up and up so that I always seem to judge my effort wrong. I'm with Cactus on it though - I love it. I miss that feeling of getting to the top of a hill and wondering what the hell I'm doing with my life.
