Some of the garbage spouted by rimmers so entrenched that TP only lets them out of his back passage at Christmas is truly incredible. Yes Pugs. People like RAF, that legendary rimmer ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/0m0lbCuTEBzaRn6f8QaM.gif) In all seriousness the negativity came from both camps and it was pretty vicious stuff.

Doesn't that make great reading!
Mark Hughes was always going to be a near perfect fit for us.
I knew he'd be great but he has surpassed even my original lofty expectations.
Our manager really is quite fantastic.

The level of negativity never made sense. Just bizarre. It was a strange time, love him or hate him, Pulis leaving left a period of post divorce uncertainty and even in the face of contrary overwhelming evidence of his record I can just about understand people not fancying Hughes as manager but where did this 'he's a massive cunt' thing come from?

Think it was his handshake phobia and the 'never on my watch' stuff that made him hard to warm to. What I don't get is the 'he ruins clubs', 'he's a disaster' stuff people were so fervent about. He'd one bona fide failure on his CV and a fair bit of good stuff.

Mainly the Wilko thing? Plus a long period at Old Trafford as a growling, moaning ,big arsed, highly successful striker doesn't do much to endear you to people round these parts! I have been surprised how calm and likeable he appears to be. I knew he was quiet, but had somehow got the impression he was a pretty gruff, very dour and arrogant character - the bloke he appeared on the pitch and the dugout. But unless he's a great actor, he's not like that at all 'in real life'. He's very self-confident, but seems a nice, quiet guy.

He always came across as a right twat when he was manager's of other clubs but then so did Huth when he was at Boro. I think he's one of those that when he's one of your own you love him (unless you're a QPR fan) but he's got that horrible streak in him whereby he will say and do anything to win for his side which makes him see a twat if he isn't on your side. Get over that and he was always a good manager (barring QPR).

I think it was because the QPR thing had been such a disaster and was fresh in people's minds. I'd read some really bad stuff about Hughes's management at the time, so that outweighed his otherwise excellent CV in my panicking mind.
Thank God that Coatesy went for him!
I think Martinez would have done well enough (he was the man I really wanted), but wouldn't swap Hughes for anybody else right now.

But when all you're exposed to is his on-pitch stuff and dugout persona, it's easy to get the wrong impression about him

Its not that hard to disassociate all the pantomime stuff when you're considering him as a manager though is it? Most top managers have a 'hint of cock' about them on the outside.

I seem to remember I was all aboard the Gus Bus and was well up for Bobby Martinez too. 2 years is a long time in football I particularly liked March's suggestion that we should have been widening the net for Hughton, Steve Clarke and Malky MacKay (all of which, by the way, were decent shouts at that time. As were the shouts for Paul Jewell and Mike Newell at various times in the last decade. ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/fwGSRilBFZwfei5Q6XIp.gif) Football makes mugs of everyone, especially me and you!

He seems a lovely bloke but he's criminally overrated. I don't think he knows what he's doing defensively, his Wigan team were uniformly awful until about March every season and would've been relegated two years earlier had we not gone out in our flip flops, and for all his sexy football they didn't score too many either. I think had he come to us it would have been too big a change in style for us.

I don't agree that he'd have taken us down, but there's no way he'd have done as well as Hughes has.

He's inherited a good defence there though and it's only recently picked up - it was miserable earlier in the season. The real test will come when he has to replace that ageing defence that's served them so well. The last good centre half he signed I can think of was Ashley Williams.

You've got to take your hat off to Coates. He's on a great run with his appointments. More hits than misses, and some of his hits have been spectacular.
Ball Macari Jordan Macari Bates Kamara (or was that Humpo?) Little Megson Pulis Hughes

My favourite part of reading through this is because the avatars update you have people like 'the onlooker' (just an example there were many more) who are slating Hughes yet they have their avatar as sparky To be fair we've seen a totally different Hughes here than the arrogant one at QPR that stated they wouldn't be in that kind of trouble ever again with him in charge. etc. Oh I'm not having a go, I never stated my feelings on the oatcake I don't think but personally he was almost bottom of my list and now I think he is ace. I was literally commenting on the irony of it in regards to everyone on here, I mean the first couple pages there just isn't a positive comment about Sparky to be found to be honest!

Grizzled pro's steeped in English football richness. It makes you wonder if the likes of Martinez or Poyet were ever on his radar.
