Swedish man with long hair (or any other man with long hair) receives the taunt. Put in a few tasty tackles, and he has abuse ringing around the ground for 90 mins. Is this good ol' fashioned football banter? Or should it be unacceptable in today's political climate? Gypsies may be quite different to the rest of us (and the term is used loosely describe a range of different races, anyway), but they still suffered persecution (and death) under Hitler, and racial discrimination in society today. Wear long hair... Dare to be different... Bingo, the Mob are after you. If it was ever funny during that game last night, the joke wore thin after about 5 mins. ( I had a chap sitting behind me shouting "D'ya want some pegs?". If he said it once, he said it about 20 times). Come on Stokies. We can do better than that!

RP,
Ostlund is a swedish player and has long hair like some sort of viking! The fact that he looked a mess gave way to shouts of Gyppo from the crowd, no malice intended, just banter. I found it quite funny, more so, as i think a lot of people, including myself thought he was quite a threat and was one of their better players!

Ignorance. Stoke fans are the losers in this case like the chants v Jones. It's not big and it's not clever!

I to have married into Gypsy Stock and was there with my wife last night, who after asking me why we were chanting gypo found it slighty amusing and took it as banter and although she didnt join in the chants, had no problem with it at all.

Banter, and anyone who detected racist overtones last night is being over-sensitive imho.
How many of today's "gypsies" are of the genuine gypsy race? Many are travellers of various ethnicity who masquerade under the gypsy banner in order to get away with anti-social behaviour and occasional criminal acts.
They are the people who really give gypsies a bad name, not football fans.

Great chant. Remember the Victoria ground. This sort of intimidating style chanting was regularly aimed towards opposing players or managers. Didn't Pulis say that he wanted the crowd there to make it an intimidating atmosphere. I for one hate every opposing player, manager and supporter. (Oh and the officials) Give em all something to remember when coming to the Brit. Let's not make it a nice place to visit. The players are certainly doing their part. Gooarn Stoke.

In a world where you're never more than six feet from an actual racist, I find it difficult to get offended by a chant about someone's haircut.
Similarly, David 'Spokeman for a Race That Doesn't Exist' Kitson should try to get things into perspective before he next opens his big flappy ginger gob.

By the end of the match, he fully deserved the abuse he got from most of the Stokies. His behaviour towards Pugh in the first half and Fuller twice in the second half should have earned him a both a caution and a red card. Not to mention that at the very end, he tried to get Fuller sent off.

Diamondice - I'll echo your sentiments. We as Stoke fans need to get fully behind our team (which we haven't always done this season, especially in the earlier games) and try to scare the shit out of opposing players and management.
Make the Brit hell on earth for visiting teams!!
COME ON STOKE!!

I'm sure the Swedish Ostlund spent the whole evening feeling that he was carrying personally the weight of Nazi persecution on his shoulders! There again he mght just have thought he was been wound up about his hair style! I've witnessed first hand genuine persecution and abuse of gypsies in Eastern Europe and to try and tie this in with the wind up of an opposition player at a football match is at best clumsy and at worst a shoddy distraction away from real racist issues in football and society in general. It is on a par with claiming the stick Jason Lee, the ex-Nottingham Forest player, received for his hairstyling a few years ago was persecution of pineapples. The only ignorance I can detect here is where people cannot differentiate between an act designed to blame the problems of the world on a weak minority and the predominately good natured wind up of an opposing player designed to do northing more than put him off his game.

I thought he should have been sent off for his 4 yellow card offences but if the useless twat wants to look like THAT good luck to him.
It does seem a bit daft to be caling a Swede "gypo" - Romanians on the other hand!!!
There is a distinction that needs to be made but we really do need to make the Brit intimidating and wagging fingers and occasional tutting won't do it I'm afraid! Perhaps the delicate amongst us would prefer it if the fans shouted "Romany" or "Traveller" - please let us know the preferred nomenclature? What next? "Who's the hirsute, illegitimate gentleman in the dark coloured fabric"?

Mark W "predominately good natured wind up of an opposing player designed to do northing more than put him off his game."
Lucky he wasn't black with long hair then!
I think the question is where do we draw the line in terms of abuse and what is deemed good natured?

Gyppo short for gypsy yes?
Gypsy - a member of a nomadic, Caucasoid people of generally swarthy complexion, who migrated originally from India, settling in various parts of Asia, Europe, and, most recently, North America.
Surely just having a pop at someone purely because they have long hair cannot be construed as racist? It's banter

RAF "Surely just having a pop at someone purely because they have long hair cannot be construed as racist?" I agree with you it's not. But it's stupid calling him a Gypsy when he isn't and it obviously didn't rattle him.
Perhaps calling him something really abusive like fitta, kuk or mammaknullare may have been more appropriate.
