This may get wheeled. On talk sport last week mike parry asked why port vale are so called. I've no idea. Wasn't their original ground where potteries centre car park is in hanley? If so makes their name even more bizarre. Anybody??

I’m sure it’s got something to do with an old pub which was near to the ground when they were formed.
I may be talking complete shyte but I’m sure I’ve heard that somewhere before.
I’m glad I could be of use!!!

Well you'd hardly call them Port Succeed would you??
I thought it was after Port Vale Street and the area round there in Middleport.

I am sure Vales first ground was up Hanley somewhere on the way out to Birches Head so any referrences to Burslem or Middleport don't stand up??

Had to laugh further down Powchirper, when it said FAQ's about Port Vale
Question #65844. Banty asks:
Is it true that Ghana supplies electricity to Cotonou, a small port in Benin?
What the hell has that got to do with V'ale

That's because no one really knows
However there was a Port Vale pub in Hanley which predates the football club
Therefore best guess is that they are a pub team

oddly was at a pub quiz in Ireland last Thursday, one of those where you write the answer on a board and hold it up. The question was in which City do Port Vale play. Out of the 8 or 9 teams only us and one more got it right, maybe 2. I think were 2 Birminghams and my fave was Edinburgh but I think they were American to be fair. I think was the same team that thought the ship in Alien was called the Nautilus.

I only saw it for the very first time about 3 months ago so a bit lucky there

I read somewhere its they started out in Middleport, and its in a vale of canal ports, hence the port theme... Middleport, Longport. And Porthill up from there.

Yep still a regular thing, not just in Ireland although are such things as smartphone quizzes these days apparently although not sure how they work. The idea of answering straight away and giving whiteboards etc to hold up after every question is to stop the looking the answer up on your phone brigade.
