I read somewhere its they started out in Middleport, and its in a vale of canal ports, hence the port theme... Middleport, Longport. And Porthill up from there. Sounds plausible but they played in Hanley Old Recreation Ground from 1913-1950 before moving to Boslem. Yeah it said that in the thing I read... can't remember if it said they moved to Hanley from Middleport, or whether they couldn't find a ground in Middleport in the first place. I'll try find the book i read it in.

OK I own up, I admit to owning "The Official Port Vale Quiz Book". Port Vale took its name from the inaugural meeting at a famous house called Port Vale House. www.port-vale.co.uk/history/

I was born and raised in Burslem and I was told that Port Vale had 2 stadiums before the current one. One was where Westport Lake is now…you can actually see bits of the concrete terracing and steps in lake. The other ground was where the old Cobridge Stadium used to stand…now gone…very close to the Mercedes dealer on Cobridge lights. I may be totally wrong but it’s what I was told growing up in Burslem.

I remember there being a toilet with a ‘Port Vale’ back stamp in it, in the old CO-OP depot in Chemical Lane, Middleport. It’d be highly amusing if Vale had been founded by the apprentices of the local shit house factory in the 19th century. I know there’s a guy who collects Port Vale bricks, there must still be a Port Vale bog out there? (Please).

I did have the shits once and the leftovers at the back of the pan was shaped a bit like the Gail's old badge.

Clearly nobody wanted them even then!

Why Port Vale?
One of the great philosophical questions of our time.

Why is Port Vale two words? I ask because I was brought up in Porthill.

Because if they didn't have a stupid name the army of retarded shit-stabbers would be unidentifiable from any of the other revolting fatbergs blocking up our sewers.
