I think we desperately need a win tonight.
Nothing would be worse than going in to the match with Manchester United on the back of 2 moral-sapping defeats.
If Manchester United then inflicted a 3rd one upon us at the weekend which is entirely possible we'd start to see the TP out brigade creep out of the woodwork like a bad smell.

You only have to look at the effects of the West Ham FA Cup game last season to see what a win can do. We looked awful coming up to that game, and world beaters after it: record in all comps was P8 W4 D3 L1 up to the cup final, with goals 19-6 in our favour. I'm not suggesting that the last 16 of the League Cup will quite give us the boost of making an FA Cup semi final, but it shows what we can do. I think Tony will be desperate to put things right tonight, and hope we won't see anyone other than Pugh from outside the 25. Even he should only play in centre midfield. I would probably go 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 (now TP is all Sorensen Shotton (Wilko on 70 mins - he needs to be fresh for Saturday) Shawcross Huth (let's try this pairing shall we?) Upson Pugh Wilson P (Rory/Whelo on 70 mins) Whitehead Jerome Crouch (Jonesy on 70 mins) needs a goal and might get one here (echoes of Kitson talk there already ) Walters Tactics - play into channels, win throws, ball in box against poncy defenders who don't like it up them. Midfield - mainly protect defence but also knock it in channels. Lineup assumes Pennant and Ethers are not fully fit and could do with a rest. Problem is delivery for set pieces other than Shotton's throws. Hmmm. Subs are if we are winning. I'd rather win this and lose narrowly to Man U, than the other way round. In the big scheme of things, a cup run represents possible glory - imagine being back at Wembley, with all the experience of playing there last season to make us tougher. Of course, we'll probably lose both

Can't really see us having a go tonight and I reckon Pulis would be glad to be knocked out of it. I fully expect a second string team to go out and lose, then we put our best team out against Man Utd to defend a 0-0 scoreline.
If it worked, I'd be very happy - not confident, though!

Tonight I'd go with:
Sorensen
Shotton - Upson - Huth - Wilko
Pennant - Whelan - Pugh - Jerome
Jones - Walters
Tonight is ideal opportunity to give Shotton and Wilko another game as our full-backs, they were both very good in their wing-back roles in the Ukraine. I also think tonight is a good opportunity to see how Jerome does on the wing too. Matty still isn't 100% fit so we could do with resting him for Saturday, Pennant isn't 100% fit either to be honest but we are very short of wing options so I'd start him and maybe fetch Tom Soares on for him around 60 minutes.
I'd definitely give Shawcross a rest tonight, he's the only player who has started all 9 of our games this season and I think the game on Sunday showed that he needs a breather.

Agreed give Shawcross a breather, it seems that Wilko and Shotts work well together, and with so many games coming up if they can get used to working together all the better.

Can't see the why pulis would want to lose this. 5 games from wembley y not give it a go. Got a big enough squad to rest 8 players each game.
Sorro
Shotts huth upson wilko
pennant whelan woody pugh
jones jerome
not a bad team think shawx be rested

I worry about Wilko at left back because he's not naturally left footed. I'm also shocked to see Pugh there as I thought he'd gone on loan!!!! Surely Arismendi might get a run? And don't be surprised to see the great Diao in there!!!!!

none of this resting players bollocks! Play our full squad and try and win! Bit contadictory No1 - playing our full squad means that we WILL rest players. I fully agree that we should ty to win but I aint going to lose a lot of sleep if we don't! We're in the middle of playing 7 games in 21 days and Sundee's was our 10th competitive game when most other teams have played just 5. Rotation is NOT resting players 'bollocks'!

I don't think tonight's result will affect the game against the Mancs one jot. That's not to say I don't want us to win. I'm pretty sure Harry will send out a second string but perhaps one that's not as weak as their Europa team last Thursday.

I hope we put out a relatively strong team tonight. Not only is the Carling Cup a real chance of silverware but two defeats in a matter of days would dent our moral!
Having said that I think that Pugh will be involved due to him not going out on loan and I think that Arismendi and Diao will also play some part.

The Pugh not going out on loan might be to do with the number of days. I seem to recall us hanging about waiting for loan deals so we could get players in who would be able to play for us over Christmas.
Or I might be completely wrong!

The maximum loan now is 93 days, so when is 93 days until January 1st/2nd?

I tried working it out but my head hurts
However, there are 31 days in October and December, and 30 in November. That should help ;D

So that's 92, so the end of September/start of October will be about the time.

Weird decision, but guess Harry & co. were unsure on Gallas fitness. Some of the suggested youth were used against Brentford as well. Will some of the first eleven be involved after all? Walker, Kaboul?

I wouldn't mind seeing Arismendi getting a run out. He didn't set the world alight at Barnsley or Brighton, but overall he's not had that much experience in England. Extreme example maybe, but Lucas was pretty poor for a few seasons for Liverpool before he acclimatised. Lots of people seem to think he's some wank player David Kemp saw play once before taking the plunge, but lots of people rate him (Tim Vickery for one i'm told) and are surprised he's kind of faded into the background.
He's in the 25 man squad so surely Pulis hasn't completely wrote him off.
