It depends what you are after - either a less combative but more skilful passer of the ball in the middle of the park, or a headless chicken who will run all day and get stuck in but offers no creativity whatsoever? I know which one Tone will choose.

Pugh .. .. I'll bang my empty drum all day about Danny P - I really do not understand why TP doesn't play him week in week out in the centre of midfield! Sure when he's put at left mid or left back he's no great shakes but he's proven so many times that in the centre of midfield he can do a far better job than Whelan! Wasted shining his arse on the bench or in the reserves

I think Pugh always looks good in centre midfield (whether in the defensive or the attacking role) and I'd be happy for him to start there tomorrow. I can still see that Whitehead is a useful high energy player to have on the bench though.
I think Pugh will be on the bench though.

Bit harsh Steve...they are both ordinary midfield players...one passes the ball better and the other one runs around a lot more. I would go for the passer but TP will go for the runner. Still need that quality creative midfield man.

Based on last performance, I'd prefer Pugh, who, for me, was MOM against Blackpool. Admittedly Blackpool aren't Man Utd but he did well. I'd probably also go for Higgy instead of Collins at LB. It's totally irrelevant however as TP will go with Whitehead and Collins anyway. And in TP we trust (well most of the time)

I'd rather have Arismendi, thought he offered something between the two, thought after the first quater of an hour, he started to play, made some decent passes, people will say it was only Blackpool, but it doesn't matter who you are playing against, you can pass or you can't. Don't think there is a cat in hells chance of it happening however.

Considering Arismendi went off with a hamstring problem it would be foolish to start him tomorrow. He'll get his chances soon enough and it is clear that his passing is a level up from what we are used to in our central midfielders. He still has a bit to learn about positional play, though.

I vividly remember the Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge last season where was Whelan constantly dithering around and barely getting out of our half. On comes Pugh and hey presto he is picking the ball up and pushed forward and took the ball forward in the short period time he was one more than Whelan did the whole match! I don't rate Whelan he's ok but I've never seen him do anything better than Danny P has done. His only positive over Danny P for me is his striking from range that's about it. Whelan seem to be lost as soon as he passes the halfway line - the accusation can be made that this is TPs fault but to me this is bollocks just made up by the Whelan lovers.

With the limited options in the question, then it would be Pugh (can't believe I would ever say that!)
Both are limited players who aren't really at the required level. Whelan and Rory give more in a more efficient way defensively andboth provide more of an attacking threat for sure!
To say Whelan gets lost when he gets passed half way line is a bit wide of the mark

Whelan doesnt 'get lost' but he isnt an incisive player
Whelan,Pugh & Tonge are probaly the best passers we have (not counting Arismendi yet) for the CM spots.
Whelan & Tonge have better shooting skills than Danny
TP will play Whitehad over Pugh tomorrow I'd guess,he'll want all the players snapping at their heels.

Whitehead had such a good game against chelsea, I would have to say Dean.
I love pugh to bits but Whitehead had the experience of playing against top 4 sides that only comes with practise.

Whenever I have seen Pugh at centre midfield I have been very impressed - he is wasted as a left back or left midfield - should be played there more in my opinion
