I'm sorry Doz, but 2.5 mill is about right not 5 million, which in my opinion could be spent better elsewhere. Yes I'm glad we have eventually signed someone, no I'm not impressed that it could cost the club up to 5 mill. I worry because in the end the fans will pay one way or the other.

Why are people worried how much he costs? And why assume he's a squad player?
TP has generally been very good in the transfer market hece we are now a team that came around halfway up the prem as opposed to dreaming of one day being in the Prem!
As Mr Fornside says its not our money! Also not many of us will have seen that much of Whitehead and most people that have are quite positive about him.
Fuller Stein etc etc all had the doom mongers out when they signed and they turned out ok!

Has he done a pre-season with Sunderland at all? Just wondering when his first appearance for us will be, won't be tomorrow i wouldn't think, or would it?
Maybes against Forest.

Because
A He isn't worth 5 mill B He isn't good enough to be anything but a squad player.
You only have to look at the majority of postings on the Sunderland site, they are pissing themselves whilst explaining that he can't pass isn't captain material but gives 100%.
Well fair enough, we've got our first signing and no doubt we will all get behind him, but lets hope we sign some players with a bit more quality aswell.

im sorry but we payed 3 million for oli and look what we got there, and whitehead is defo a step up from that so if it ends up being 5 million, it will mean we have done as a team somewhere along the line, ie still being in the prem so im not dissapointed, its the way of the market nowadays

RAF: I know he's over-priced mate and I understand what you're saying but who is available to us for much less than that at the moment. Cardiff want 6 million for a lad that could be good, but is largely unproven and everybody you ask about has a 3-4 Million starting point. It seems much worse than even last pre-season and clubs are talking stupid figures for average players. If we were to go for someone who we might consider a step above Whitehead, just what mental figure would we be quoted and would he even consider us. We all keep coming up with players names but most of them are none starters. I totally agree with your sentiment but we are in the middle of a mental world of football where average players cost stupid fees. Given that, I think he'll be a good signing and whilst I agree with your 2-3 Million valuation, we could never have got him (or any similar player) for that in todays market.
It's mental!

According to the stoke website he wil be playing tomorrow at Preston he probably needs the match practice as he has not had a pre season with Sunderland.
As to his quality "In Pulis we trust"

I think we can all agree that we have purchased a very good solid prem midfielder who is worth close to £3 mill which is what we have paid, surely the add on’s taking it up to £5 mill would be based on Stoke's success and not player appearances? Hence that if we achieve our goals and this player is part of that then surely £5 mill would be right for a midfielder in lets say the top 10 teams??

3 mill down payment isn't a lot these days. It all depends on how the lad performs. 3 quid is too much to pay for Pericard now we know what he brings to the club and we were all cockahoop when we signed Kitson for 5 mill. It really will depend on how he shapes up. Personally, I'd rather have paid 12 mill for Tuncay, but maybe this player will turn out to be just as good a buy respectively speaking.
OS.

Love this quote from TP.
“I know he’s been a close mate of Liam (Lawrence) down the years, but it doesn’t seem to have done him any harm."
Also great to hear he's the first of many.
In TP we trust, he won't spunk PC's money on shite!!!
I'm more than happy with Whitehead's arrival.

I'd rather have Whitehead as a squad player than Olofinjana, so if Oli goes to Monaco, or wherever and we get a reasonable return for him. Then it can be seen as a definite strengthening, which is a great thing.
As folk have pointed out, good signing, if there's more to come, which i'm sure there will.

All playes are over-priced and unless alternatives at the same price can be suggested then it's bit of a daft argument He's no superstar but he's better than Diao and Amdy and for me and long throw aside he's better than Rory aswell. Stick a ball-player in next to him and our central midfield will look miles better.

Seems a solid enough signing, after last season I think we all recognised that our centre midfield needed shoring up a bit. Seems to be the Pulis way of playing, having 2 solid centre midfielders and pushing the wingers up to support the strikers.
I think he'll prove a decent signing, I'd prefer to have a solid spine to the team this season rather than doing a Brazil and thinking we can out play everyone by playing namby pamby nancy boys in the centre of the park.

About right ,all things considered. He will be in the first team I believe from the off , and you will get pride passion and commitment from Dean. He should fit in rather well and is quite flexible in the positions he can play.
A good signing.

I'm not going to judge him before seeing him play, all too often i've pre judged a Pulis signing only to have been proven wrong, be it me thinking a signing will be good and turning out shit or visa-versa .

He's better than any other midfielder we've got and somehow he's a 'squad player', what does that make the others?
