I think he's the sort of player we'll end up signing because we've dithered too much and lost out on our plan A and B targets eg Cisse. It's a dangerous game we're playing. We need to show our intentions soon by securing someone and show other teams and players that we mean business Ashton would be a great way of starting the ball rolling.

I appreciate that we all have an opinion and we will voice that opinion on various players. However, I wish that we would all be a little less adamant that OUR opinion is fact. just suppose we sign Smith and large numbers of fans have decided that he is 'shite'. Will he get a fair chance to shine? Will he get time to settle in? It seems that people have already made up their minds about many players that they see infrequently on the box and the likes of Smith will be cut very little 'slack' by Stoke fans if we do sign him. I suggest that, if that's the case, we accept/respect the manager's opinion and support them both. Of course we can voice our opinions but to lable payers that have never played outside the Premier League and have played for Leeds (when they were good), Manchester United and Newcastle (bearing in mind we have JUST returned to the Premier League after 25 yeras of, largely, DROSS) as 'shite' is just a tad rediculous, in my humble opinion.

But a lot of people think the Championship is where that clown belongs, especially as a midfielder. Nicky Butt is the same, now playing at the right level. Leave both of them weeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll alone.

He's not what we need to improve. Shite midfielder, good be ok up front. We need more than that. The only players we should even be considering from 'Castle are Beye, Bassong (who we won't sign) and Guttierez. Past that none of the bloodsuckers have done enough to merit being welcomed with open arms to any Premier League as they will be like the spectre of relegation appearing at Your window.

I think he's from the same mould as Cresser (Wait I'm going to try and put a positive spin on this) in that he'll work his socks off, which tbf is exactly what you need in the central midfield area. He's also a strong and courageous player who won't shirk away from a tackle unlike some who'll just dally a leg at the ball. Imo he would also offer something more as a striker than Cresswell, as he once showed he could score goals at this level with Leeds.
I think he is exactly the type of player Pulis is talking about when he says 'Waifs and strays' in that he was once a talent at Leeds and at time with Man Utd and all he needs is a little nurturing in order to bring the best out of him again a la BT and Ethers.

Any player that pulls on the red and white will get our support. He would get as much time as anyone else to settle in and shine. Obviously if he plays well and gets some goals, (most )people wouldn't call him shite. The problem with Alan Smith is that over a large amount of time he has continued to put in poor performances, he doesn't know if he's a forward or a midfielder and he plays neither position well anymore. He is shite.

I'm sure he would be backed as much as possible (like Kitson was) if we did sign him. The opinion that he's shite isn't just one formed on this board, it's the overwhelming concensus from the majority of Newcastle fans aswell. They have seen him first hand over a few seasons and draw the same conclusion. Anonymous, scared to tackle (linked to his leg break?), poor passer of the ball are all phrases i've heard linked to Smith when i've spoken to Newcastle supporters. That doesn't mean he would be bad for Stoke, or any other club, as a lot of factors go into making a player perform well. Anybody that pulls on the red and white stripes gets my support 100%, but at the moment I wouldn't want him in our squad as I don't think he has anything to offer us.

Bayern: He probably isn't mate and I'm not siging his, or anyone else's praises particularly but what depresses me to a degree is the fact that, in recent weeks on this board, the following players have been vaiously described as 'shite' 'twats' etc etc etc....
Alan Smith, Michael Owen, Kevin Nolan, Steve Sidwell, Richard Dunne, Peter Crouch, Cisse, Kevin Doyle and the list goes on, and on, and on!
These players are NOT 'Shite'.
They may not be right for us and they may have their best years behind them but people are talking bollocks whenever they get going about these types of players. We have moved into a whole new world in the past 2 years and now feel that we are in a position to make such comments on players that we could only have dreamed of signing 12 months ago or so. It is one thing to say that 'he's not right for us at our/his stage' (to be fair, that IS what YOU have been saying) but it's just plain stupid to describe these types of players as 'Shite' (IMO).

I'll give a reason for each being shite-not that I agree with all but I'm just showing how easy its done and that prejudice sticks Smith-one of the poorest footballers to visit the Brit in the past two years-general concensus is that he's not good enough, relegated Owen-passed it, washed up striker, that cares more about horses than football and that will break down every few months, relegated Nolan-Bolton fans said he'd lost what he had, I didn't believe them, he went to Newcastle and helped them to be relegated Sidwell-pass I think he's ace Dunne-sendings off, OG's, fat, slow, general liabilty Crouch-looks like Timmy from South Park and this sterotype and his build lead to people thinking he's shite Cisse-always offside, stupid hair, poor attitude, nearly relegated Doyle-outshone by Kitson for Reading, relegated Out of those players I must admit I wouldn't be to bothered if we missed out on all of them bar Sidwell.

You can't base a logical opinion of a player on one or two performances. Alright he hasn't done much good recently but I think he has the right attitude and potential. Also relegation, does that mean the likes of Martins, Downing, Tuncay, Huth, Wheater etc aren't good enough?

I don't think he is shite, but he can't jump for shit and gets knocked off the ball far too cheaply by smaller players and he most definitely couldn't play the 'Mama Role'
Smith hasn't scored for two years and the midfield excuse is not an excuse.
Owen class act when not injured, but we have seen the best of him and do we risk the massive pay out on what maybe become few games?
Dunne would be a fine squad player
Nolan used to be brilliant but has lost his way and could well be past his sell by date
Cisse is a luxury player with a poor attitude but can score goals and could be worth the risk although it now looks unlikely for us to get him
Doyle is at his level now
Sidwell, Wouldn't mind seeing this lad up front for us

Bayern: Sorry mate, you know I respect your opinion but you have just labled an England Striker who has scored 15 International goals in 20 odd games as 'shite'. Before you say it, I know the opposition wasn't the best but you can only do it against whoever your playing.
Cisse (twice top scorer in France) and, by most people's standards a good footballer could not possibly be described as 'shite' (To be fair, you didn't)
Doyle hasn't at any time been 'outshone' by Kitson. The fact that Kitson outscored him (marginally) one season can't possibly warrant that description. Doyle is younger, quicker and (as yopu're about to find out) much more in demnand than kitson. He was last season too but Reading wouldn't sell him although they WERE prepared to sell Kitson to Stoke??? at the moment, Doyle's price sits at 6 and a half Million!
I have no problem with people's opinions on players but it just lazy, easy and inacurate to say 'shite'.
