You're talking to the wrong person here re Downing, I'm glad he's too expensive for us! As for Smith its based on more than 1 performance from watching him in midfield for Leeds, Man Yoo and 'Castle and him looking shite for all 3 in midfield. His "performance" agaisnt us that day was against Eustace and Pugh too and he and Butt both got dominated. I'd turn my nose up at Butt and Smith even if we were still in the Championship. Thats how low I rate the pair of them after their performances in recent years for their club.
And I was just hypothesing why people would say they're shit.
On that list the only one I would say is shit is Smith, I really don't think he's what he need.
We have determination in bag fulls, we need ability now.

I know you've only really called Smith 'shite' Bayern but I listed those players because some on here HAVE called them ALL shite over the past few weeks.

Can't You read-I said "I'll give a reason for each being shite-not that I agree with all but I'm just showing how easy its done and that prejudice sticks" I think Crouch is a bloody good striker and have stuck up for him on numerous occasions, I was merely providing reasons why some think he's shite. Cisse, I'm not a massive fan (mainly his attitude) but he's obviously not shite I class outscoring as outshining and Kitson was the one who always looked better. I don't think Doyle is shite but I'm not a fan either. edit-just to clarify-a swap deal for Doyle involving Kitson would however be most pleasing!

The only one I would nail to the mast as being shite is Alan Smith and only in midfield. He's not a midfielder. I just don't see the logic in even being linked with him. He's be like Cresser but on 40k a week-bad, bad, bad, bad, bad times!

All this 'being linked with' stuff is just pure speculation though bayern. I don't know if TP is interested in Smith or ANY of the names mentioned but I'm sure that most of it is 'Press Crap'. I think that's half the problem as fans get more and more frustrated with the lack of signings as time moves on and then they hear that we are 'linked' with this and that player and we all discuss how great, or crap, they are. Very few clubs have signed anyone yet and players will hold out for the best offer. We have to learn to be a bit more patient and not react wildly to every name we get linked to. I believe the Zigic thread is now up to page 3,950 or something like that! Most of us have never heard of the bloke other than he's 12 foot tall but he's made out to be some kind of God-like signing. I know it's that time of year but it's all a bit daft if you ask me.

I can just imagine TP signing Smith though and it scares the shit out of me.

I reckon the majority of players we've been linked to would be good signings and show how far we've come in 2 years, but Smith is not good enough.

Have to admit I would find it hard to see someone I barracked as much as Smith turning out in the red and white stripes.
With TP's policy of "putting an arm round players", it's a case of "Be careful who you slag from the stands, you don't know when he'll sign for you" ;D

Bayern: Sorry mate, you know I respect your opinion but you have just labled an England Striker who has scored 15 International goals in 20 odd games as 'shite'. Before you say it, I know the opposition wasn't the best but you can only do it against whoever your playing. Cisse (twice top scorer in France) and, by most people's standards a good footballer could not possibly be described as 'shite' (To be fair, you didn't) Doyle hasn't at any time been 'outshone' by Kitson. The fact that Kitson outscored him (marginally) one season can't possibly warrant that description. Doyle is younger, quicker and (as yopu're about to find out) much more in demnand than kitson. He was last season too but Reading wouldn't sell him although they WERE prepared to sell Kitson to Stoke??? at the moment, Doyle's price sits at 6 and a half Million! I have no problem with people's opinions on players but it just lazy, easy and inacurate to say 'shite'. Spot on that man. Amazing how players that have played in the CL and at International level are not good enough for us. We can't compete with the bigger clubs and have to take a chance on players who maybe are stuck in a rut but CAN perform at the top level . 3 years ago we couldn't dream of signing a player like Alan Smith. I was a bit shocked to see the abuse Owen was getting on here yesterday- a player with 40 top class goals to his name is immediately labelled one to avoid etc. Who on God's earth do some expect us to sign????

Like I said in another thread if we were linked with Alan Smith and we were in the Championship I wouldn't want him. He's not good enough. We shouldn't be grateful for being linked to overhyped people like him.

I look it at it like this Bayern. If we bring players in then I hope then can perform and improve our side despite maybe having lost their way a little bit and perhaps not being a player I particularly wanted us to get. On the other hand you can call them shite or whatever over the internet before they've joined us and if they do - before they've even kicked a ball.
We obviously belong to different schools of thought on this one.
If a player does come in and is utter dross etc then fair enough. So far all I've read on here is Ashton no way Owen-not good enough- Smith-shite etc etc etc
Like I said I'm not sure who some expect and no doubt whoever comes in a good few will slate them straight away before the ink is dry.

I think Smith if he keeps fit could be a very useful utility player a little like Danny Pugh but being able to play Forward and midfield whereas pugh was defence and midfield. I wouldn't expect him to start with the names that are going around but could be a sound buy at the right price.

Ok- personally I thought 3 seasons back Alan Smith in a deeper role was excellent. Obviously he got injured then went to the graveyard of lost football souls in Newcastle. I could see him fitting into our style very well although he wouldn't be my first choice of player. I tend to avoid rating players on their performances for Toon as so many players went there and just didn't perform- Nolan and Duff other ones.
I know what you man re some players- we were linked with Ched Evans and felt similar- not good enough IMHO but willing to give a chance- wouldn't call Smith 'shite' personally. Gobshite maybe

Up front, I reckon he could do a job. But even when playing for Man Yoo I never thought he looked anything close to being a midfielder. There are 5/6 players in the squad already that I'd rather see playing central midfield than him.

Smith is just another of a long list of over-paid poor footballers looking for another sucker to bleed dry.
Answer me this - would a bloke who has very limited footballing ability, racks up red and yellow cards like no-ones business and spends all afternoon sliding around on his arse in a poor attempt to win the ball improve our team?
