Hoekstra:
Yes, great memories and you can only have respect for the guy as a player. As stated earlier, I'll applaud him next week but then hope to make him very unhappy indeed.

You really are 'gunning for me' today aren't you matey. YES I will applaud him because I am a 'Football' fan and I'll put my Stoke credentials against yours any day of the week!
Unfortunately, the 'sporting' element disappeared from the game some years ago. More's the pity from my point of view.
Face it mate, we see the world, and sport, from a very different view point and quite frankly
You're welcome to yours!

Archiesdad;
As usual, you would be wrong. I've spent 50 years of my life giving dedicated, and very vocal support to my beloved club (home and away) - as I'm sure you have. That doesn't mean that I can't show my appreciation for an England legend and it doesn't mean that I won't be immediately forgetting my courtesy and shouting 'my head off' for MY club throughout the game.
I may be a rarity in this modern football age and I readily admit that your opinion is, by far, the majority opinion. However, I was born a human being and not a sheep. I don't blindly follow that which I don't believe in, no matter what the popular view of the day is.
I will GLADLY applaude Alan Shearer as he takes his place on the bench. I will then get on with supporting my club. Incidentally, both of my grown up sons are embarrassed by the vocal nature of my support, it's quite a family joke!
I'm an unashamedly old fashioned 'Sportsman' and proud to be so.
You can be whatever you like, and I'm sure you'll get lots of support for your view.

I might do mate. But I WILL have nodded in his direction before the kick off won't I?
Believe me, a-d I love my football club and I'm as 'bad' as the rest with my passionate, irrational, hatred of all things none-Stoke. But I hope I'm always a sportsman and I can lower myself to acknowledge a great ex-player when I see one. Then he's swiftly forgotten for the next 90 minutes.
I know it's an unpopular view but, hey, it's what I believe.

D'ya know a-d I'm finding it happens quite a lot just lately. It gets worse as I get older. I know the feeling.... .. However, on a more serious note, I think that Shearer will demand a far higher level of commitment and fight. By bringing in Iain Dowie he obviously has done this to instill a much tougher backbone to training and discipline.Dowie does the defensive coaching and Shearer does the rest. Remember the last time we played a bouyant Newcastle United under King Kev..? I know that this time around we are a better side, but on paper they have a far more expensive squad of players. He just needs to get the best out of them, and that is the arguable problem. Can he get the best out of them.? There is also the small matter of Newcastles difficult fixture list to the end of the season. On balance the odds are firmly stacked against Shearer failing to save them, but hey, Football is a 'funny old game'. There's one thing for sure, and that is that it will provide a much stiffer test for those teams yet to play Newcastle with him in charge.

Giving Shearer a bit of a warm welcome as he takes his place on the bench means nowt other than showing a bit of appreciation towards a guy who is an english footballing legend and someone who has said numerous good things about Stoke this season on MOTD.
I think the majority of the Brit will give him a warm round of applause THEN give his team the biggest amount shite they've ever been on the recieving end of in a match.
There needs to be a big chorus of:
Where's ya sofa gone, where's ya sofa gone,
Far far away. . . far far away.
(Tune: Where's your mama gone)

I love this time of year because of watching football fans blart on telly (when we beat Boro some of their fans were getting close) but Geordie fans blarting is undoubtedley the best!!! it's hard to tell if the Geordies are blarting or if it's just the strain of breathing and heaving those massive moobs about has just caused them to sweat profusely!!

Lets be honest - Newcastle will now be safe (just our luck).
I still think the third relegation place is between us and Dull, with Dull to be relegated.
I think Big Sam will guide Blackbum out of the mire and Portsmouth are picking up points.
My only other hope now is Sunderland, who are doing a good impression of a skydiver who has forgotten his parachute.

That's more like it Paul Let's not go all soft, cuddly and nicey nicey at this stage of the proceedings. Tone wants it to be an intimidating, hostile atmosphere, let's not let him down now. Shearer needs some real abuse and so do his wank team. It's all out war at the bottom and we shouldn't be taking any prisoners.

They've still got an horrendous run in and several key players out injured. What we need is Chelsea to turn them over. I don't think its between us and Hull at all, no-one from Bolton down is safe

They've appointed a nonsensical buffon. Their only hope is that said buffoon's talismanic properties give them enough of a boost to scrape clear, like last season's buffon did.
