Thing is he's an intelligent bloke. So why has he took it now? I'm not convinced he is Joe. He doesn't come across as one on MOTD.

The only way AS could make a significant difference to Newcastle is to bump into a genie who could allow him to go back a few years, put his boots on and get on the pitch. His appointment will have no significant effect other than to make their fans shout a bit louder for a while. Newcastle were either going to survive bu the skin of their teeth or go down regardless of who managed them for the last 8 games. Shearer has been very clever. If they stay up he is the new messiah and if they go down there's no way he'll get the blame. Iwas a very easy dicision for him.

Same players, same situation, 8 games to go and deep in the shit! I woulds say exactly the same if Alex Furguson was taking over for the last 8 games. They will go down or they will JUST escape regardless of who is in charge. There is not enough time for any other outcome and THAT is why Shearer now wants the job. He can't lose. It is the time frame that promts me to say there will be no significant difference. We won't be able to 'prove it' either way because, with only 8 games to go, they were either going to scrape enough points or not. I'm sure that Shearer was well aware of that and 'jumped' at the opportunity, who wouldn't in the position they are in. If they go down he certainly won't get the blame.

it's no gamble at all at the end of the day.he's only standing in for Kinnear whilst he's still recovering so the only difference between now and 2 days ago is that they'll have someone to stand in the dugout on saturday, apparently Kinnear will still be doing most of the team tactics etc. as usual. Shearer has NOT taken over as manager at all, h

Shearers been appointed for 8 games and 100 grand a game..plus a bonus of a million if he keeps Newcastle up...which won't be that difficult as theyr'e only 3 points adrift...
Shearer can't lose..stay up and its because of him..go down and its the owners fault
My guess is that there are new owners in the wings who have got Shearer to accept the job..but they are keeping quiet at the moment...a bit like Mark Hughes at Man City..who knew about the Arab takeover long before it went public
All the bookies have Stoke the favourites to be beaten first by Newcastle and make no mistake..Shearers appointment is a very bad move for us..all this macho posturing about it not making any difference is ridiculous..
The difference is in the Psychology..and its psychology that wins games...Mindset/Confidence/Belief..all feed into each other...
What thing is for sure..next week will be the biggest battle of the season at The Brit...and we all know that us Stokies will DEFINITELY be up for it...
Lets just hope our team is too....

You really are a very amusing chap aren't you. The point there is, they COULD go on to win every game and finish well up the table, but they won't! They COULD also go on to lose every game and finish bottom, but they won't. They WILL be relegated or they WILL escape by the skin of their teeth. That is regardless of Shearer in charge or Micky Mouse in charge.
Smart Arse!

How can you possibly know that? good question, Shearer could just be the tonic they need to stay up, they only need a short term lift to stay up and shearer could give it, the plan imo will be to survive first then look at replacing shearer with someone more experienced and with a proven track record of getting the best from the players they have, someone who can always find the right player for the right price,,,,,,, TP to toon in the summer anyone???? ;D

Glad to be of service. Wouldn't want you to think I was stating the obvious.
The title of the thread asks a question about the effect of the Shearer appointment. I pass my opinion just like anyone else. You're perfectly entitled to question and/or disagree with that opinion but, for what it's worth, I have stated that I think it will have very little effect because of the time scale. Feel free to disagree but don't try to big up your own self importance by taking the piss.

You seem very cocksure that his appointment will not have any affect on the teams performance... how can you be so sure?
it is a daft statement, isn't it?

Atrchiesdad:
Of course it's not a daft statement. There are several ways that his appointment can go but the point I made is that there is little chance of his appointment having a great effect because there are too few games left. Maybe he will have an amazing effect and Newcastle will suddenly become a good side. Maybe he will have no effect and they will fade tamely out of the Premiership. Maybe they will fight like lions but still(just) get relegated, And maybe they will fight like lions and not quite make it.
I simply nailed my colours to the mast and suggested that, in my opinion, he will have little effect. I expected them to fight 'tooth and Nail' anyway and it will be a damn close run thing for them.
No doubt, at the end of the season, and if they have survived, the pundits will be falling over themselves to big up the 'Shearer Factor' but, for me, I doubt his appointment would have made the difference between staying up and going down.
It's a perfectly reasonable assessment but is just my opinion. I, like everone else on here, love to debate these things and I am OFTEN wrong. That doesn't justify the 'No Shit Sherlock' lazy response. That implies that what I stated are the ONLY two outcomes and that is plainly wrong.

His arrival will get the fans going as it has already shown, BUT they have got Chelsea first and i can't see them beating them, which will immedietly put pressure on shearer!
No matter what Shearer does you can't disguise the fact that they have a overpaid very poor squad who are not up for the battle! Still going down in my opinion!

Thing is Shearer was deliberately boring in interviews BUT his teammates used to say despite his dullness he was a very popular man and a real good laugh and very much the leader of the gang. Thing is though managing is a different kettle of pork altogether. You have to be amongst the lads but not one of them. That transition can be hard.

It is something that is/will be impossible to prove or disprove. We can only pass an opinion. For myself, I expected Newcastle to give it their all before his appointment and if they were going down, to go down fighting or to just about survive. If that's how it goes and, lets guess that they just about stay up, Shearer will be 'Lorded' for keeping them up. We will actually never know if the Shearer factor was the deciding factor because he will have overseen 8 games. I'm not trying to knock Shearer and it would be a great achievement for him if they survive but HIS effect will be a matter of opinion. I have no doubt where the punters will fall on that one and it may be right. Who knows.
If he were in charge for say, half the season, it would be much easier to make an informed assessment of his effect, but that is where he has been very, very clever. He can't be blamed for failure but he will be sainted for keeping them up. In normal circumstances I would wish him all the best but I need my club to finish above his.
It's all simply a matter of opinion and, over the course of 8 games, it will be very difficult to say what effect he is likely to have. I have simply voiced my opinion.

Was he deliberately boring on MOTD? Yes. Thinking about it, they probably make you sign something before you agree to become a BBC pundit promising that you'll be as dull, smug, nonsensical and self-contradictory as possible. It's part of the criteria for the job. Hats off to Super Al, he lived up to all of those requirements to the absolute letter.

He hasn't a hope! The fact that he's bringing in Iain 'relegated Charlton' Dowie as his right hand man sums things up!
He has absolutely no management experience so how his presence will suddenly turn a shit team into world beaters is far beyond my comprehension!
Just to add - how many ex-players have successfully entered management at the top level and succeeded? If I am not wrong I think the answer is a big fat round zero!
