Blackburn’s injury problems meant Sam Allardyce blocked Mokoena’s move but Stoke boss Tony Pulis then moved for Birmingham right back Stephen Kelly.
Birmingham wanted Ibrahima Sonko to go the other way but Pulis decided to hold on to the Senegal centre half after failing to get Calum Davenport, who moved to Sunderland.
I found this on the Daily Mail sight. It seems we missed out on these two chaps. Mokoena is an ok player, but again, another defensive midfielder?? and I cannot decide on Davenport, Im guessing we will see how good he is on Saturday?

Mokoena being targeted could mean that our main target of a CM from France didn't happen and therefore all we will hear about is Kelly (hopefully)

I'm not surprised we were in for the pair. They are players we have previously targeted and we all know that TP likes to re-visit former targets!
Davenport would have been nothing more than back up to Abdy and Ryan.

Pulis is so scared of foreign clubs, he buys African players from English clubs, but will never buy them at a cheaper price from a foreign club. What a prick he is.
And again, he uses the last hours of the transfer window of players he can't get. Why should Blackburn sell Mokoena to us?? And why should we buy Davenport and Mokoena when we need a full back (I'm not sure of the Kelly deal will be accepted) and a goalscoring midfielder. I don't understand Pulis' way of thinking.

If Davenport was the "experienced centre-half" and it really was Mokoena who was the priority midfielder for yesterday, that suggests that we were already well down our target list by the time yesterday dawned.

Didn't he join Sunderland quite early on in the day though? How did they manage to rush it through if we were unable to?

There were a few problems with terms, and at that time he was not our first choice,we were still waiting for another player to be released from his current club

luke2u every post your giving pulis stick just shut up m8 Why can't I? I thought this messageboard was to express views. If he's so keen on signing Mokoena, why could he take the same gamble as Blackburn did? They paid £ 300.000 for him. Pulis is just wasting PC's money with the way he tries to sign players.

It's fair enough to criticise, I think in many ways you have a point. However, why are you never able to give any credit? Do you not think the four players we've brought in this window will improve the team?

Etherington and Beattie are really good signing, and I've said so. Not too sure about Camara, as I wonder how we're going to use the players we now have. Kelly still not signed, but if it goes through I'll be happy.

Actually, if they were the targets we were after (agree, though FM, i think we must have been a good few pages down & into the list by then though ) , then i'm not fussed we didn't get them tbh.
He's obviously worried about CB cover (& with Donks & Cort, who wouldn't be?) so i can see Davenport being OK-ish. But, like a lot of posters though, i would have gone balls-out for a left back as well - so releasing Higgy to cover / rotate for CB.
As for Midfield, i think the one(s) we really needed should have had the adjective "creative" not "defensive" in front of their descriptions.
But this is TP we're on about here, so while that's no big surprise, i hope he has a game plan to give his new strikeforce a proper supply line.
Overall though, i think we have done well (& i include Kelly in that) &, if he can get over his tiff with Lenny (& actually play him), i think we have more than enough to stay up.

Disagree, extra bodies can only help, especially at centre back - what if Abdy gets injured/suspended? Who comes in then?
My thoughts are if that happened Higgy would come in and Griff would go to LB and Wilko/Kelly at right back

To be honest, I don't think we needed a CB, Cort and then Sonko will do for cover. We needed a central midfielder.

Diao seems to be miles away from fitness again. If one of whelan/amdy is injured, and presuming we still want to utilise delap on the right, this would mean olofinjana or tonge stepping into the middle. Olofinjana looks like he is simply not good enough, and i wouldn't be surprised if Tonge is in Rudge's garden.
