As a life-long fan, as we all are, am I wrong in wanting to be relegated this year? My reasoning is the worry about what may happen next season and learning from history.
Most of us will recall our last time in the top division and our dramatic Hudson-inspired escape from relegation, only to be followed the next year by the "holocaust year". Many then said that it may have been better for us to go down the year before rather than suffering the misery of the year after.
Unfortunately I can only see the same happening if we stay up this year. Who seriously thinks that next year we shall beat the likes of Villa, Arsenal, Spurs at home, take points off Liverpool etc. At the same time who can believe we will ever improve our away form? Take away the good home form of this year and we would be marooned at the foot of the table.
As much as I want it, I can't currently see us doing a Wigan, Fulham etc and consolidating within the Premiership. Is the best we can look forward to a Baggies existence of yo-yoing up and down?
Someone give me some hope to cling to????????

You are wrong. There's a transfer window in the summer, premiership money etc etc. If we stay up we will have a different (and hopefully improved!) team at the start of next season from the one we have now.

Wigan have been in this league for 4-5 seasons now. If they can manage it I fail to see why we can't. I believe if we stay up we will push on...now we are here I won't nothing more than Stoke City to be playing top-flight football.

"Take away the good home form of this year and we would be marooned at the foot of the table."
We've got good home form because we're good at home! We're well organised and have goals in us. I can't see this changing much if we stay up... Noone fancies a trip to The Brit
Is that enough hope?

You're quite simply wrong mate. The Premiership is the ONLY place to be and it's what EVERY club in the land aspire to.
Drawing parallels with history is just plain daft, the circumstances are oh! so very different now, what with all the money floating about and with a born again chairman.
If we can just hold on this season, I firmly believe we can go from strength to strength, assuming of course that the manager has learned from his mistakes!!

I can see where he's coming from. If we could manage two or three consecutive relegations we'd surely reach the point where we'd be able to look forward to winning every game playing the likes of Hartlepool every week! Bring it on.............. ;D

Look, I'm not saying I really want to be relegated - I just worry about next season. The wins against Villa & Arsenal this year would be up there in my Top 10 Desert Island matches, I just fear that teams are sussing us and that next year could be a lot different if we don't have a Plan B, C, D etc.
Clearly TP has a lot more about him than Ritchie Barker did, or does he. Back then we had a superb midfield but never used it - just as now team selections have us all scratching our heads at heads, but that goes for every team up and down the land.
You've all spoken and I'll stop worrying about next season - concentrate on getting this season sorted first. But ......!

You do the best you can in the best league you can get into to. If you get it wrong, you pick yourself up and go again.
In answer to the question. Yes. You are wrong wanting to be relegated this season

Yes you are wrong
another stoke fan happy to wrap himself in a comfort blanket of small town mediocrity frightened to be successful or even compete with best why ! - I'll always remember Fullers Goal against Villa - Our win against Arsenal and other precious moments
why shouldn't they continue ???????
god knows ! we've waited long enough and deserve our place in the sun
As for such 'fans' who are more comfortable with us relegated
you should be very ashamed and, publicly beheaded
I'll even wield the Axe !

You're wrong! The only way to get stronger is to take the Premiership money and reinvest it. The teams that come up will be in a weaker position than us. Reading have lost key players since they've been down there as an example. We can raid the teams that go down and improve. If we go down do you ever want us to return or would you be happy with Championship mediocrity for the rest of our lives. You need to gamble a bit in life otherwise if you never left your comfort zone or took a risk you'd be a tee total virgin, but maybe you are?

He,d better following the fail then ;D Personally i thought this season was going 2 be 80% misery but as long as the 20% joy keeps us up we can only improve with another 40m in the bank next season can,t we? KEEP THE FAITH ;D

I see what you are saying, that Wolves 4-0 win to keep us up was a fantastic game and I remember being on such a high. However the season after is one I want to eradicate from the memories apart from the win over Arse and the Shit!
That besides I wouldn't want to be relegatd at all, we would have to start all over again, it would be a missed opportunity and one I feel we would never recover from.

Those old stokies amongst us will remember when we were promoted to Div 1 in 1962-63, we had almost 10 seasons of struggle, building and re-building the team until we had a successful 4 or 5 seaons following our wembley triumph in 1972. So lets be realistic about our ambitions and concentrate on survival this season and a gradual build up over the next few seasons to achieve success. Several teams have done this, Pompey, Bolton to name a couple. Also these teams have achieved moderate success on a similar budget as us.

Your fear is grounded in the memories of 1985. But it's a false analogy. In 1984 we avoided relegation but lacked the funds to invest in a stronger squad. In addition, we had a weak manager (Bill Asprey was a good servant of the club but out of his depth as the top man) and a club structure geared tiowards a fourth division club.
In 2009 we have a much stronger, purposeful club structure and we would have a massive financial and confidence boost from staying up.
It's a totally different ball game - and we need to stay in it.

I think you're wrong, it was a different game and as has been said, we're on a very different trajectory now. If we can conceivably stay up we've absolutely got to.
But in hindsight it's possibly true we went up a season too soon, it might well have been better if we'd lost in the playoff final and then hopefully gone up as the Champ's dominant side, with that extra confidence.
