In 1985 when we were relegated I thought it might not be so bad as we might be able to come back better and stronger following a winning season in the 2nd Division (as was)
Well fuck me - I was a kid then - now Im a middle aged father of 3 including a 16 year old
YOU ARE WRONG

Your argument is you want to us to be relegated this season because if we don't, you think we could be relegated next season?????
It doesn't make sense. We could be relegated any season, so why wish it sooner, rather than later???

PKH1 I understand your thinking but you are wrong. This week and others I have criticised Pulis but that doesn't diminish my desire for him and the team to succeed. Pulis has worked wonders and is capable of a few adjustments here and there. A lot of the frustration is with some of his decisions but more so because we are so close to achieving our first goal. We have had 1 hammering in 23 league games. This season the support has been amazing and even though the football has been at times dire that will be all forgotten if/when we stay up. But relegation an option ? No.
Think of the Brit with all corners filled and 35,000 plus. Stability in the best league. Blackburn pulled off a miracle when they won the league so why sholdn't someone else. We should have won the old first division with Hudson and Co in the 70's. Pipe dreams, yes, but relegation must not be on the agenda that is why I believe Tony must get his act together, the players must gel and two positive results could and must be achieved in the next 8 days.
Come on Tony. Your'e a decent bloke, you make some crap decisions but you can keep us up.

Yup you are wrong, having seen every game in 83-84 and 84-85 the situation is totally different. In that era Stoke had no money no £35-50m that the Premiership currently offers. Dudley Kernick (who the hell was he) famously backed Stoke to go down at the beginning of 84-85 when he saw the then manager Bill Asprey having to massage the players, as the club had no physio. So the two situations are totally different. If we stay up we get another £35-50m next season the maths are obvious how much stronger do you think Stoke will be next season if we stay up. Beattie wouldn't have come last Summer but having Stoke make a fist of staying up he is willing to gamble. 4 th bottom Stoke with a year's Premiership experience and another shed load of cash will be a more robust proposition next season if we stay up

You're wrong...big style
in fact it's completely the reverse
if we go down this season we may never return, in fact it could be the start of a decline... that's my fear.
there is no God given right that a club will come back up straight away, far from it.
you're mad.

As a life-long fan, as we all are, am I wrong in wanting to be relegated this year? My reasoning is the worry about what may happen next season and learning from history. Most of us will recall our last time in the top division and our dramatic Hudson-inspired escape from relegation, only to be followed the next year by the "holocaust year". Many then said that it may have been better for us to go down the year before rather than suffering the misery of the year after. Unfortunately I can only see the same happening if we stay up this year. Who seriously thinks that next year we shall beat the likes of Villa, Arsenal, Spurs at home, take points off Liverpool etc. At the same time who can believe we will ever improve our away form? Take away the good home form of this year and we would be marooned at the foot of the table. As much as I want it, I can't currently see us doing a Wigan, Fulham etc and consolidating within the Premiership. Is the best we can look forward to a Baggies existence of yo-yoing up and down? Someone give me some hope to cling to???????? That was 23 years ago things have changes since then just a little bit. And like some other posters have said if Wigan, Fulham, Blackburn, Portsmouth, Middlesbourgh, Bolton can do it then why can't we ???

Football today is very different from 25 years ago, staying is a huge injection of money into the club

stay up and three new clubs come in who will be favourites to go down and also the arse is still to fall out of the market and any club that has large debt could really struggle. thats not us!

I'll be at the games whatever league we are in and would not see relegation as a massive failure because our squad would be good enough to come back and many teams have had to yo yo because of the gap in the divisions, however having said that there is still lots of hope , we need to win today and then go from there , particulalry at home , I still think we can reach 42 points which I would hope would keep us up, if we do stay up its about getting two or three new players each season from the tv money and not settling for whay you have as reading did last season.

Yes, you're wrong.
However, all those of you criticising with slight and thinly disguised abuse should remember the early season chorus - by MOST posters on here - "let's enjoy our moment in the sun and even if we get relegated, so what?"
How selective are your memories?
I want us to stay up, even though it means we'll keep the manager. Premier league status is far better for attracting better players and extra revenue through sponsorship and so on.
Maybe it will even attract a better manager!

Yes Id rather stay up so i think you are wrong - but if we do stay up its only a matter of time before Pulis is really shown up as the poor tachtician and poor signer of players he is. So yes, it would be nice to stay up but i cant see/hope that Pulis goes in the summer - a sideways move back to Portsmouth! ;-)

I thought it was a joke, at first, but then realised that you were serious and respect your opinion, while violently disagreeing.
Have you any idea how much money we've had to spend, this first season in the PL? And I'm discounting the transfer money. Next season, we wouldn't be spenidng on the PL "musts", like £500,000 on a new media centre, new Press facilities in the Upper stand, in addition, with 150 and monitors on 75 of them (none in the CCC) and so much else. Plus the choice spend, like re-decorating the entire stadium, for thes ake of pride, even smaller things, like putting a porch on Delilah's rather than that fire door, for entrance and a new Press entrance. Plus the screen, new dugouts and too much else to mention here.
None of that would need to be repeated and we could concentrate on transfers and wages, in a second season. To say, at this time of the year, that we would not improve, is absurd. And we'd have seen it all before and be no longer over-awed. (See Smudge's excellent editorial, in today's Oatcake mag.)
Please God we stay up, for a million positive reasons. And let the ref's get their claws into another team!
