the forces a good job in this current climate, im army and wife is in raf if you need advice just pm me good wages once finished training loads of trades - more than you think good pension comradary do a minimum of 4 years to see you through recession may pay you in university if you join as an officer the travel, sport and adventure training is still there vocational qualifications education allowances forces rail card a good start in life for any teenager cheap housing for married couples and yes you may have to go on operations one day Good in principle, but you missed out details. Wages will be omn a sliding scaling depending on the branch you join. Trades are available - from nursing to mechanic etc, however there are some restrictions on what you can join (i.e. G.C.S.E or equiv are required from certain areas. Pension is good but is generally geared towards a larger amount paid when you resettle (leave) from the army after full time of service. If you do not complete full service (increasing up to 24 years+) you will not be able to acces an immediate pension, however dependant on how much service you completed you will recieve it as an an addition to pension/wages later in life. There is a system being implemented where you may have to leave the service due to not promoting (i.e still a private) after twelve years, however you can now serve 24 years, or if a 'good egg' up to the age of 55 under new terms of service. You may leave at the 4 year point, hoever you wil not be entitled to any financial assistance to resettle. However leaving at six years, will entitle you to gain financial assistance to retrain for any course you want including accommodation, travel and food. You will also after eight years service, be entitled to £1000-£2000 grant towards any NVQ Lvl 3/A Level or above course for up to ten years after you leave the service. There is also now the opportuinity for University fees to be paid for anyone leaving the forces after a certain time period TBC. The officer side is actually a minimum of 2/3 A Levels if you are very good and show exceptional promise. They will only send you to University to complete a Technical degree if you already have A Levels in that field. You are then very restricted to where you serve e.g. Signals, REME or RE. There are various financial incentives and free eductaion throughout the army that will help people progress is they want, with annual entitlements to undertake courses, just for serving. I am presently undertaking CIMA to allow my ACCA quals to cover my transition to Management Accounting and I am in reciept if financial assistance and facilities to allow me to do this. You can also, after 9 years, claim for Advance of Pay (Presently £8.5k) which can be used to put a deposit on a house. Comes directly out of your pay with no interest bar minimal insurance premium each month. This looks good.. it all does especially with the good pension and allowances when after you leave either by choice or not.... However there is a price to pay. (I will not gloss over it). Ops are frenquent (at least 1x six month tour every two years) but the extra allowance for that are very good. The welfare facilities for family are ever improving to look after your wife and/or kids but you do sepnd a lot of time away on training or otherwise. You can be restricted on your conduct or what you can do (i.e no chance of pulling a sicky when you have to go to work after a night out. Everyone will know why as they were there with you. So militray life may feel suffocating sometimes. However, you can literally see the world with it either through work or through fun. With Work I have been to the obvious places, Iraq, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Germany (home!!!)and Northern Ireland.... however I have also done adventure training - Scuba Diving in Kenya, Skiing in the Alps, Hill walking in the Pyranees and Andes and am presently looking to go to Nepal for two years. Sport, I have been introduced to the world of Rugby and love it(Not bad for a Grman!) as well as the various opportunities to playing sports to varying standards... including international! My main bit of advice would be to join because you want to.... not becaue you have to. Have fun

Most people can find things to do with their time. Its money they need. On the other side of the coin if you do voluntary work it can mess with your benefits. They are no help at all. I asked if I could claim anything while I started my own business until I built up enough work to make money. Answer=Not a chance.

But, I also agree that the benefits system makes it really hard to do, which is crazy.

Still looking for any sort of labouring job (i'm 19) Even if its a bit of cash in hand work every now and again from someone who does a bit here and there would be ok. Just need a little bit to last me until I start basic training in July (Army). Got to sign on in Castle again in 8 hours - What joy!
