What's happened? I haven't seen any news or read any papers this weekend, I've been drunk/asleep for most of it. www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/jan/11/monarchy-raceA secret video showing Prince Harry making racist remarks and mocking his grandmother has been discovered.
The prince, who is third in line to the throne, made the comments in footage shot while training as an officer at the Sandhurst military academy in 2006, a year after being forced to make a public apology for wearing a Nazi swastika at a fancy dress party.
In the film, the 24-year-old prince calls an officer from the Pakistani army, who was on the course with him, "our little Paki friend" and, when he sees another officer cadet wearing a camouflage veil, exclaims: "Fuck me, you look like a raghead." He also mocks the Queen - the commander-in-chief of the British army - during a pretend mobile phone call.
Last night, St James's Palace issued an apology for Harry's behaviour in the film, obtained by the News of the World. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said last night: "This sort of language is not acceptable in a modern army."
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has demanded a formal inquiry into Harry's behaviour, and Muslim groups and leading MPs have warned the comments could increase tensions with Islamic groups in the UK.
The film will infuriate army chiefs, who are actively trying to recruit Muslims as intelligence officers and translators for the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. Staff officers have insisted the Army's policy must be "zero tolerance to all forms of discrimination". But the casual use of racist terms by Harry, who was promoted to lieutenant last year, appears to add weight to recent claims by a Jamaican-born soldier that he faced regular racist abuse from non-commissioned and senior officers.
In September, three army instructors were suspended after an undercover BBC investigation into the Infantry Training Centre at Catterick, in Yorkshire. During the programme, one recruit was secretly filmed yelling "Paki" as he plunged his bayonet into a target dummy.
The video begins as the prince joins other cadets gathering at an airport for their flight to Cyprus. Harry is behind the camcorder, panning over snoozing soldiers when he zooms in on the face of a Pakistani soldier. "Ah, our little Paki friend ... Ahmed," he whispers.
The second remark comes after arriving in Cyprus. Harry is again filming his comrades when one puts what appears to be some camouflage over his head. Harry says: "It's Dan the Man ... Fuck me, you look like a raghead."
Later, Harry is filmed pretending to finish a call to the Queen. "I've got to go, got to go. Send my love to the corgis. Send my love to the corgis and Grandpa. God Save You... yeah, that's great."
In another piece of footage, Harry gives orders to his comrades on an upcoming exercise. When he asks if there are any questions, one says: "Are your pubes ginger too?" Harry replies: "Yes, they are," to laughter from the rest.
Later Harry, again wielding the camera, asks another member of the squad to talk through the exercise they have just done. He asks for "your ups and downs in the exercise. Highs and lows ... Good points, bad points." Off camera, he adds: "How do you feel? Gay? Queer on the side?"Only a moron would suggest that he is "a fine gentleman".

'When he asks if there are any questions, one says: "Are your pubes ginger too?" Harry replies: "Yes, they are," to laughter from the rest.' That's quite funny though. ;D

The only people who will have a go about this are those that will have ago about anything that is not absolutely PC. I am not a big royalist fan by any means but I have the same respect for Harry that I do for every person who has served with courage.

I think we've all said and done things that we've later regretted..'Let he who is without sin..cast the first stone'..etc etc
I'm certainly no fan of The Royal Family...although the Christmas Special was quite funny..when they tried to defrost the turkey in the bath..but I quite like Harry..He just doesn't give a shit does he...he smokes and swears and takes the piss out of The Queen in public..How could you not like him?
Now then if he'd said 'Honky' instead of 'Paki' would it have produced the same ridiculously hysterical reaction
I think not...
And why are Rupert Murdochs newspapers printing this 'story' over 2 years after it happened?

We call Australians - 'aussies' whats the difference, oh yeah I know what it is Basically if we dont give pakistanis benefits its racist, if we dont build their religious buildings its racist if we dont call them by the name they want its racist

Once again our media and some intolerant people have gone over the top. I thought the definition of malice and racisism in calling anyone a Paki depends on the circumstances its used in. This was a close knit group of guys who will call each other anything and it won't be taken out of context. It's what men do when they're battling together. I have little time for royalty either but I must admit that Harry bucks the trend. I would have been happy with the guy working with me down the pit. I'm pretty sure I could have called him a ginger Gerry wanker, he would have laughed and come back with an equally acidic comment.
Fuck the do-gooders. They're ruining everything in our society even to the point we can't take the piss out of our mates now without worrying that we might offend someone who might hear our conversation.

Agreed OS
What we have to understand is that the forces is an utterly different environment from our comfy offices or shop floors. Friendships and relationships are formed there that those of us who have not served cannot understand, and the use of the word "Paki", in a context where clearly the party isn't offended (and remember our ilfordian cousin, who would cite the ginger pube remark as sensitive) means nothin at all. What matters is that is the shit hit the fan, the Paki and the Ginger pubed one would fight side by side, defending the British interest.
The rest of it is just bollocks.

Sorry but some normally sound people are defending the indefensible here. 'Paki' isn't like 'Aussie' or 'Brit,' it's become a hate word. Like nigger, like cripple, like spack. Doesn't matter if you think that's right or wrong or want to argue with the ref, it's just how it is, the language has changed, so's the meaning for people on the receiving end and it's no longer acceptable. It might have been acceptable banter 20 years ago but anyone who uses it now IS racist and if you think it isn't racist that makes you a racist too. Take it on the chin guys.

Sal, i disagree entirely, and frankly i'm unhappy with the insinuation that i'm racist simply because i disagree with you. Things go on in the army that would be deemed unsuitable in the wider world, but they go on because there is a togetherness and conscious that those of us who have not served cannot understand. I'm sure Harry could sue the army for the remark reagrding his copper bollocks. I however assume that seeing as these two men will be fighting alongside each other, literally putting their lives in each others hands, one calling the other a paki and the other calling him a ginger pubes is, in the grand scheme of things, utterly irrelevant.

I get you Sal, if anyone has anyone seen the "n*ggerguy" South Park episode it completely sums up your point.
However it's another broadsheet scandal, they just love it and he just set himself up for it. The problem is, most people like to fit in, especially if you are a royal in the army, its going to be tough and in a war mainly between white soldiers and asian soldiers a few slang terms are going to be used by both sides.
His own fault for doing it on camera, but in my opinion the "rag head" term was fine by me in the current situation he is in. How can you PC the army.

Why can they call each other "niggers" and "pakis" between themselves but if a white man says it for a laugh a whole can of worms is opened up?
I feel desperately sorry for Harry, I think he just wants to live a normal life and do normal things that people of his age want to do, but unfortunately his whole life is scrutinised, must be like the living Jerry Trueman show or whatever it's called!

In the current p.c climate we live in "paki" is seen as derogatory. I also despair that black people can walk around and announce each other as "nigga" openly when if a white person would most likely be done for a racial aggression charge.
I cant see how anyone in the army would call their enemies middle eastern members of the taliban/ al queida etc, where does p.c end?
I would say in those circumstances, its just acronym.
The fact that the tabloids feel they have to tarnish the then 19 year old in the army by pulling up a 3 year old video is frankly on their behalf pathetic.
A group of lads chasing a group of asian to beat them up for example just because the colour o their skin, yes racist.
P.s, yup, The Truman show

My point i feel is getting lost, this is not a discussion about race. Call someone you don't know a "paki" on the street and that is a racist act. Dressing it up as anything else is bollocks.
What we have here is two young men, clearly pals, letting off a bit of steam prior to going off and defending our country. They clearly feel very comfortable in each others company and the paki/ginger pubes remarks is an extension of the camaraderie that they enjoy. Actions speak louder than words and seeing as the "paki" is off to defend our shores, i think we can all be rather glad he's not the type to start getting in a sensitive lather, seeing as he's going to be fucking shot at.
All i'm saying is let's keep a little context. Worse things happen in China and all that.
