You HAVE to confront them. We are living in the 21st century and discrimination or abuse that is solely based on the colour of someone's skin is TOTALLY unacceptable, with only ONE exception.

I had a bloke sitting behind me a couple of season's back who was calling Mama a Black Bastard (and a lot worse) throughout the first half. I turned round and told him that if he didn't stop I would call the stewards and ask them to eject him. He started to argue the case but everyone around me (including the bloke's mate sitting next to him) backed me up and he saw the light and shut up.
So give these blokes a (polite) warning that you'll tell the stewards if they don't stop. If they look the sort who would start trouble if you spoke to them then don't speak to them - just go down the gangway and tell a steward that you want them ejected and why and tell them the seat numbers. They don't need to know it was you who shopped them. If the stewards don't do anything, go back and point out that the club has a policy against racism and tell them you will be complaining to the club (and the local media) about their refusal to act and then do it after the game - remembering to keep a note of the seat numbers.

Fornside, You are living in a dreamland if you think it's ok to politely ask a racist Neanderthal to stop being racist. Do you know these idiots are some of the most feared 'supporters' in football? Some of them have published their stories on how they have fought the 'biggest boys' and The GMP. They can crush your head with just a look. They have so much cocaine pumping through their veins they can zap you to shit man. They wear Stone Island and Prada which means they can duff you up in style.

You HAVE to confront them I don't think he has to, why should he have to face all the agro, just tell the stewards they're paid to deal with things like this.

Now I have many friends from all race and cultures. I have in the past shouted things like tackle the black twat. Now I have shouted this because he is both black and in my opinion a twat. Does that make me racist? I have also called people fat, ginger, sheep shaggers etc. Where is the line drawn?
|
|
|
Post by greyman on Dec 5, 2008 10:47:19 GMT
It's drawn at the point where if you stood alone in a locked room with Ilford Dave and a length of steel pipe and called him a ginger twat, you'd be OK. If you stood in a locked room etc with Abdo Faye and called him a black twat, the situation would be very different.

Its not a pre thought out comment but a spur of the moment comment based on someones appearance. PS. These comments aint in block 30 are they? There are a couple of lads moved in this season who are a bit ott sometimes.

Where you sit, I have a similar bloke right behind me. But this bloke behind me has a racist comment for every black player on the pitch.
Everytime a black player gets the ball from either team, he shouts 'ZULU'.
When Brazil came, there was that chinese player who plays for them, he was screaming 'Chink' and 'Hiroshima'
I turn around expecting some loutish skin head, and I turn to see a grey haired old man with glasses on the edge of his seat. I can't ship him

I'll be honest when we played arsenal i called adebayor a cheating black bastard! but in my opinion that does not make me a racist! I called windass a fat twat and have called kitson a ginger twat, in my thought process i'm simply insulting somebody because of a physical difference that stands out including skin colour, now if i saw adebayor on my local pmt bus i would not make him stand or if i was the prime minister i would not ban blacks from voting because that would make me racist!
I just dont see why calling someone a black bastard is any differnt to calling someone a fat bastard!

You are using a person's race in a derogatory way, if a black man called you a white bastard would you feel that he was being racist? I would. I personally think that calling someone a ginger bastard is wrong, just as bad as racism but others will disagree with that. Racism is innate, it goes back to times when we had to defend our tribes from other tribes, surely there is no need for that in 21st century Britain?

nick - why try to reinterpret the law on racist chanting. If you were tried for speeding at 50 mph in a 30 mph zone you wouldn't try to argue that you were not breaking the speed limit - although you might try to argue that you thought the speed limit was set at the wrong level.
If you were tried for stealing something you wouldn't try to argue that stealing was ok if you didn't like the person.
The law says that racist chanting, such as calling a player a black bastard, is illegal. Just accept that (at present) it is illegal. If you don't like it then vote in a party who will change the law but don't try to argue that a law doesn't exist just because you personally don't like it.

It's all to do with context. Read what greyman has said and if you wouldn't stand in a room and call Abde Faye a n****r, then you know that your thought processes and your comments are racist. Equally, if your best mate is black and you have a great rapport with him, you could probably get away with it.
I can't advise you, oatcakeeater, you have to act according to your own concience and with regard to the consequences of you doing so. Personally, I wouldn't go to the stewards, I would tell them to shut it, but that's me. I might get a fistfull of knuckle for doing so, but if that's the price for treating neanderthals and racists with the contempt they deserve, so be it.
NB. The words, 'black', ginger', 'fat' etc are all perfectly ok if the context is right. e.g...we have a number of black players playing for us. Paul Ince was the first black manager in The Prem. There's absolutely no racism attached to those comments.

I can't ship him There's just something darkly funny about that, but just imagine being a Chinese player and hearing 'Hiroshima' from the crowd...you wouldn't know what the feck is happening! And who the hell shouts Zulu!? This is a strange thread, where to draw the line is a tough one, I'd like to think that if I was at the ground and I was to hear racist comments (specifically the N or C word) I'd have a word, especially if I was sitting with my 6 year old and 10 year old nephews. Still, doing it is a different matter. Ask for 'black bastard', whether it's for our players or opponents I think it's not particularly racially motivated, I think it's part habit and something growing up you use to hear a lot, it's still not nice but for me it's something I'll let slide. In comparison, you look at some games in Italy and particularly Spain at the moment, you've still got banana's being chucked at players, monkey noises and some really extreme racist chanting, even directed at teams own players - I think Thuram commented on this on his time in Turin. The problem is the generation gap between fans, things have changed and moved on so much is recent years. I speak with my gran parents and although I love them they can make some terrible comments at times, I remember once visiting and my nan talking about England having too many 'foreigners'....then remembering my wife is foreign, instead of apologizing she just said I' don't mean you love'. I love my Dad to bits but sometime he says stuff I have to bollock him for, he's not racist but sometimes doesn't think about what he's saying, my mum will still say 'chinky' for Chinese (food), I still hear 'I'm going the 'paki' shop' instead of post office or local shop, it's going to take generations to remove things so intrinsically rooted, we've just got to hope it slowly fades out. Still, we could all debate this all day, we all have different opinions, and we can all interpret situations differently, and unfortunately Racism will never go away.

Racism : the belief that a ground such as race, colour, language, religion, nationality or ethnic origin justifies contempt for a person or group of persons
Racist bullying / harassment : a range of hurtful behaviour that makes a person feel unwelcome, marginalised, excluded, powerless or worthless because of their colour, ethnicity, culture, faith, nationality.
It's not the same if you're fat, ginger, have a big nose etc., Racist comments offend not just the victim but also their family, their community and culture. Passion yes, banter yes, but racism is not funny, it's not clever and it's got to be stamped out.
Oatcakeater I'm not suggesting you enter into a philosophical dialogue with the Neanderthals but by doing nothing you condone their comments. Stand up for what you believe in and you will get support from the vast (decent) majority.
Look forward to your post after the next match.
